I am looking forward to becoming an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse. I have dreamed of furthering my education for a long time now. Presently, I am a Psychiatric Staff RN, BSN on an acute care inpatient psychiatric unit. I have been practicing in this position for 11 years now. I also have approx. 10 years of medical/surgical experience from a community hospital .I love what I do, but I am limited by my medical knowledge in that I cannot diagnose nor order treatments for many common disease processes. I feel with the proper education, I could positively affect pt. outcomes and improve their overall health. I am a people person, with great communicational skills and a very caring heart. I know there is a increased
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner Student (FNP) at Frontier Nursing University (FNU). My passion to care for people was evident when I was growing up and I knew I wanted to become a nurse and care for the sick when I cared for my grandmother who was not feeling well. After high school, I started my career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) and worked with the elderly population which I really enjoyed. I worked as a CNA as I enrolled to school and earned my Associate degree in nursing in 2011. As an RN, I continued to work in a nursing home and rehab facility with the elderly as I decided to pursue my BSN. Upon completion of my BSN I found a job at a hospital in cardiac telemetry heart failure unit where I enjoy working as I care for people.
In Chapter 15: Aging and the Elderly, the U.S. birth rate has been falling for more than a century. It happens because children are more likely to survive into adulthood, and so couple have fewer children. As more women work outside the home, they choose to have fewer children. Greater material wealth and advances in medicine have raised living standards so that people benefit from better housing and more nutrition. The oldest segment of the U.S. population, is increasing rapidly and is already forty times greater than in 1900.
As a registered Nurse I have kept my focus on medicine and Psychiatry, as an Adult Nurse Practitioner I want to maintain
General assessment of Mr. McKay raises a few red flags that may indicate potential elder mistreatment. Dried stool and dirty sheets are noted on more than one occasion. This reveals that Mr. McKay is not getting adequate and timely care and the care takers are neglecting to tend to him on a more frequent basis. Pre albumin and albumin are used to interpret individual’s nutritional status. Mr. McKay’s pre-albumin was within a normal range with 16.0 to 35.0 mg per dL being the norm (Beck & Rosenthal, 2002). His albumin level, used to monitor long term nutritional changes was below the norm. However, these levels are dependent on other factors like hydration status as well as kidney function and are not as sensitive to
In America we have very many ways people deal with their older relatives. Normally people put them in nursing homes or care facilities. I personally believe we should hold our elders in high regard. The older generations have seen and been through a lot of history, and have a lot of wisdom. Those who simply do not care about their older relatives are making a huge mistake.
Personal Statement I have been always goal oriented, upon my arrival to the United State of America, my first attempt to be enrolled into college, but due to my visa status I was not able to do that. My experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant on a Cardiology and Dementia Units of the hospital has shown me the many different aspects of working in the medical field. I have been able to come in contact with a variety of patients, with different purpose of life story. As I connected with some of the patients, I got the positive difference which I was making in their life.
“The term ‘aging out’ refers to children within a state’s foster care system who are still in the system upon reaching the age of majority or when they have graduated from high school” (Craft, 2017, Aging Out). Many of these children “have not found permanency with an adoptive family … or they have not been able to return to their biological parents” (Craft, 2017, Aging Out). A child typically ages out at 18 years, “but some states have extended services beyond this age because so many young adults are just not ready to be thrust out into the world on their own at such a young age” (Craft, 2017, Aging Out). If a foster parent chooses to continue parenting the foster child once they have aged out of the system, they are able to as long as the foster youth is okay with this. If an individual continues fostering a child, they will no longer receive money from the state.
The human organism is a collective structural and functional integrated system. It consists of many components; chemicals, cells, tissues, organs and systems. Atoms being the smallest unit of matter comprise the cell. Cells are the basic structural and functional units that build the body.
Analysis of the effect of Age and disease on the body structure and functions: Aging is often associated with the structural and functional changes such as altered sensory and motor continence, appetite, hunger, thirst, diminished pulmonary ventilation, reduced bone density, immobilisation, sensory deprivation, short term memory loss and altered mood. These factors can contribute towards more hospitalisation, immobilisation, less social interaction and more dependency on the health and social care staff, nurses, clinicians and health care providers (American College of Physicians, 2004) M3 Aging is a continuous and gradual process that begins in early childhood, adulthood and middle age where the body functions gradually begin to decline
Aging can affect the overall rate of health care utilization, as seniors use more health care services compared to any other age groups. Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) report in 2011 shows that 40% of acute hospital stays in Canada were for seniors although they are only 14% of the population. According to the report, higher utilization is related to higher number of chronic conditions, rather than age. Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Aging (201318 Strategic Plan) reports that Canadians aged 85 or more and have no chronic diseases use only half of the health services compared to people aged between 65 and 74 who have three or more chronic illnesses. About 40% of the health care services used by seniors belong to only 24% of the seniors who have at least three chronic conditions present.
I've very adaptive to new technology such as programs used for online documentation and electronic MARS. Other registered staff in my unit often comes to me for problem solving and troubleshooting with our online documentation program. I always put my patients first and I take the time to listen to my patients & families, no matter how busy my schedule may be. I work well under pressure and in a solo or team environment. I strive to become more knowledgeable in nursing in order to provide the best care I can to my clients In order to excel at my profession and passion I need to do everything I can to make myself better. As part of that, I did not stop with Bachelors, I did my masters, then I did Medical-surgical certification & I am also certified preceptor, have certification from UCF. My upbringing developed my core beliefs of community, family, loyalty, compassion and honesty. It also taught me that all things worthwhile require hard work. I love being a nurse, but recognize my yearning for more. I love nursing and have enjoyed my time as a floor nurse although my work experiences are acutely based, I have observed the direct relation between primary and acute care. As a nurse primarily working with patients, I have observed how patient miseducation, miscommunication, and
When reading chapter 10 in our textbook it talked about the characteristics and challenges people face during very late adulthood. Very late adulthood is a fairly new term because many believed that late adulthood would cover everything until death. The section within the book that I wanted to learn more about was the care of people who are dying. Since my grandfather was placed in hospice care I have wanted to learn more about this subject. The first thing the book did was define and differentiate between palliative care and hospice care. Palliative care is specialized medical care and attention for those with a serious illness or condition, it is about managing pain and symptoms and not about finding a cure. Hospice care is more focused on
The article is about healthy aging. The significant key points in the article includes multiple chronic condition impact on heath of aging, as well as heath care resources. Canada health care system emphasizes on curing and treating symptoms rather than adopting prevention strategies and promotion of health. Community and national group support and nurses are responsible for managing chronic condition to promote healthy aging.
For this paper, I had the privilege of interviewing one of my friend’s grandmother. Her name is Jamie Hansen and she is a healthy and active 68-year-old grandmother. In the beginning of the phone call, I asked some basic background knowledge questions such as how many grandkids she has and if she was a widower or not. I found out that she and her husband are happily married and that she has six grandchildren. As I got to know her more I started asking questions that pertained to the interview aspect of social theories. I figured out that Mrs. Hansen’s responses led to an application of the continuity and socioemotional selective theories.
Humanity has come a long way as we evolve and adapt to the changing environment. Through the years, we have managed to overcome several limitations, which in the past were nothing more than dreams. We succeeded in landing on the moon and communicating over long distance, yet there are still some boundaries we have yet to cross despite our best effort. Aging is an inevitable process of nature. While we cannot stop the ticking clock in our body, we have made it possible for aging to be delayed and relieved to a great extent through advance technology and modern governance. High-tech equipments and medications are available for the treatments of more illnesses as our understanding of medicine improves and governments nowadays are doing
