Adolescence is the transition period from childhood to adulthood, this is the time where the person changes in cognitive and physical ways. Adolescence is the period after a child hits puberty and ends depending on culture. Biologically, the child experience sexual maturation, there are two categories that fall into it. Primary and secondary characteristics evolve from it. Primary sexual characteristics include the maturation of reproductive organs. Secondary sexual characteristics are, “visible parts of the body that signal sexual maturity,” such as breasts and widened hips for girls, facial hair for boys, and pubic hair for both girls and boys. In the adolescent stage from ages 12 to 14 relationships usually last about five months on average. When Christopher was younger he described looking for, “girls for their body figure and the things they had materialistically. When one is young they start to focus on the things that are expensive and ‘in style’.” When I asked Christopher how long did his previous relationships last, he answered, “longest [was] 9 months, on average [they lasted] 2-3 months….Now I focus on things that will benefit me in the future and look at girls for what they have in the inside and how they make me feel.” He also stated key words such as, respect and happiness. The factors that influence development during adolescence include genetic/biological and environmental/social. There are many developmental issues that take place during the transition from an adolescent to a young adult. Middle adulthood is a complex time period that requires a multidimensional outlook to understand all of the processes and changes that are taking place. The many changes during middle adulthood include physical, cognitive and social differences. Many of these changes create significant stress and it is important to understand ways of coping with the anxiety. Many of these coping mechanisms include mindfulness and cultivating a sense of self-efficacy and mastery (pg. 482). There are many changes during middle adulthood that may require stress management techniques and interventions.

A common piece of everybody’s vocabulary today is a word used in various contexts with little understanding to comprehend what it really means. “Maturity”, the stream of questions that come to our mind when we begin to ponder on the eight letter word is numerous. The most basic being, “What is maturity? How does one step up on the pedestal of maturity? And how do we measure maturity?” Einstein puts his perspective on maturity in an even more complicated manner, “I live in that solitude which is painful in youth, but delicious in the years of maturity”, this view point does paint us a picture of maturity, but leads us to a whole new world of mystification.

The purpose of this issue paper is to compare and contrast two different articles one written by L.E. Berk in 2010 that explores lifespan development. The other article was written by the staff and research team at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford in 2012 that addresses what cognitive development is and the progress of adolescence cognitive development.
