Adnan Syed was a golden boy to people; he was smart and loved by everyone. He never thought he’d be convicted of his ex-girlfriend’s murder, neither did anyone else. In fact, when he first received a call from the cops regarding Hae’s disappearance he brushed it off, more scared at that fact that he was high on marijuana and talking to a police officer. He thought Hae had just ran off to California, just like everyone else. However, when they found her body in a park notorious for being a body dump his whole world turned upside down. Soon after this a friend of his, Jay, confessed to the police into helping Adnan with Hae’s murder which then put Adnan behind bars. However, was Jay’s testimony true? Unfortunately Adnan’s case has many flaws and lies to it, and the true answer still remains; is Adnan Syed actually innocent or guilty all along? Adnan Syed was a senior at Woodlawn High School located in Baltimore, Maryland when he was convicted for the murder of Hae Min Lee. Hae was Adnan’s ex-girlfriend and also went to the same grade and high school as Adnan. He was known to be a smart student who adapted to his surroundings …show more content…
At the time of this call Adnan “should’ve” be in school according to his remembrance at that time but since Jay wasn’t calling her then it had to be Adnan. This puts him in the car with Jay. This piece of evidence suggests Jay’s testimony could very well be true that he was with Adnan during the murder, putting Adnan in a guilty position. However, cell phone records state that even though the call was longer than two minutes it still doesn’t mean that someone had to be talking, a voicemail over a minute is recorded in the call log meaning it could’ve been an accidental call registered. Overall, there is a few select evidence that does match up with Jay’s story of Adnan actually killing
There was nothing linking Adnan to this crime other than a few fingerprints in Hae's car, which isn't a big deal since Adnan and Hae dated and would have obviously spent time together, and Jays word. Some say Jay and Adnan were close friends while others say they were just casual acquaintances. Jay says that on the morning of January 13th him and Adnan went shopping and after he dropped Adnan off at school. Jay says that Adnan then left the car with Jay because he was going to kill Hae and was going to need Jay to pick him up after. Jay says he later received a call from Adnan saying “The bitch is dead, come and get me im at Best Buy.”. Jay says he goes to Best Buy where he is shown the body. Later they drive around and end up at Leakin Park where Adnan burys Hae. Jay says Adnan asked has him if he was going to help bury the body and he says no, but he then says he helped dig the whole. That story that Jay told was the states whole
The crime had taken place in a twenty-one minute time frame, though this affidavit extracts Adnan from the scene, placing him in the library during the extent of the murder. In the letter it was written, “Dear Adnan-- I hope I spelled it right. I'm not sure if you remember talking to me in the library on January 13, but I remember chatting with you" (Episode 1: The Alibi, Page 18). According to Asia Mcclain, author of the affidavit, Adnan had spoken to her at library when he was supposedly enacting the deed of strangling Hae to death. The contents of the letter as opposed to what was established about the time frame of Hae’s death clearly demonstrates that Adnan is innocent, “Quote, "We left around 2:40," unquote. Remember, Hae is supposed to be dead by 2:36” (Episode 1: The Alibi, Page 18). Adnan had spent the time with Asia at the library, being there during the frame of time in which Hae’s murder occurred, making it impossible for him to be the killer. Adnan Syed has an alibi, putting him away from the scene of the crime, this indicates that he was innocent and should not have been
Most people don’t think adnan is guilty since there isn’t enough evidence . When you start to look at all the evidence and all the stories that were told it all truly comes back onto adnan. Adnan is guilty for the crime he did because he can’t recall where he was on current day, every speech he has given it falls back on him, and most of all adnan is in every evidence that anyone gives.
Adnan was very inconsistent with his interviews. First, he said that he didn’t help bury the body and then later in his second interview he said he did. A lot of Adnan’s stories was mixed up and didn’t line up, so it makes believe that Adnan could’ve been making up lies about Adnan. Jay is the one who said that Adnan killed Hae and is the big reason why Adnan got charged with murder in the first place. So if Adnan’s stories don’t line up then was he actually telling the truth about Adnan? If Jay is lying than there is not really any big pieces of evidence linking Adnan to the murder of Hae Min
Adnan’s ex-friend, Jay, told the police and detectives that he witness seeing Adnan opening the trunk to Hae’s car, with her dead body inside. Jay states, “He opens the trunk. And all I see Hae’s lips are all blue, and she’s pretzeled up in the back of the trunk. And she’s dead,” (Ep. 1, p. 9). This means that Jay saw Hae dead in the trunk of her own car, with Adnan by his side. Furthermore, this shows that Jay was the only one to witness seeing Hae dead, which means that Jay didn’t have an alibi to back him up with his accusation. When Sarah Koenig looks further into the investigation, she realizes an important detail. Sarah Koenig narrates that, “As for physical evidence, there was none-- nothing. Apart from some fingerprints in Hae’s car, which Adnan has been in many times, there was nothing linking him to the crime-- no DNA, no fibers, no hairs, no matching soils from the bottom of his boots,” (Ep. 1, p. 6). Here, Sarah is making the point that there was no proof that Adnan was the one who actually killed Hae. Nothing from the hairs on his body to the dirt on his books physically proved that he was even at the scene of the murder. Thus, Adnan is innocent because there was no trace of himself, on Hae or her car, that showed that he killed
Although i believe Adnan is innocent some people may think he is guilty because his palm print was on a map book. Some people may argue that he committed the crime, this reason is why people think he did it that he was mapping were to bury the body. They were looking all around the park for clues and found the map. But i think this source is not that reliable because they could not tell if this map was 6 weeks old or six months old the palm print.no one knows he could of went there a bunch of times it is still a public park.he could of went there along time ago just to visit and might of threw the map away without even knowing.
In conclusion, adnan is guilty because their is a lot of evidence against him. Even though adnan is guilty, he shows he is ultimately innocent because everyone thinks he has good character. What I mostly learned from this project is to always investigate, if something don’t look
Firstly, the Nisha call placed Adnan with Jay after the murder. This call could have been a butt-dial that rang for 2 minutes. The call could have been from Adnan, who wanted to make Jay talk with Nisha. The Nisha call does not prove Adnan killed Hae, as it simply just puts him with Jay at the time. Also, the prosecution stated that Adnan was constantly doing bad things. Everyone does bad things, but it does not make them murderers. Finally, Jay knew the location of Hae’s car. The fact that Jay knew the location of Hae’s car should arouse suspicion on him. The evidence utilized by the prosecution is circumstantial and can be disproved, and the lack of strong evidence proves Adnan’s
or something. And I sat down next to him. We starting chatting,” by Asia Mclean. This piece of evidence gives Adnan an abili to where he was after school and it causes us to believe that he couldn’t have killed Hae. The final piece of evidence Adnan and how he was during the
One piece of evidence that supports this theory is the fact that Jay had Adnan’s phone. During the timeframe of the murder a number of calls were made from Adnan’s phone to different people. All these calls made were only to people that Jay knew himself. Jay was in possession of Adnan’s phone before, during and after the 21 minutes in which Hae was murdered. These calls were all in the area of the murder clearly shown by the cell phone tower map. Phone records show calls to and from Jen, one of Jays best friends from high school, who Adnan had only met once or twice whilst with Jay. It doesn’t add up that Adnan would call Jen more than once, before and after the murder if he didn’t know her.
Think about how often people get arrested and how often trials are held every year, let alone every day. Oftentimes, innocent people are accused and charged for a crime that wasn’t their fault. This was the case for Adnan Syed, an innocent guy who was put in jail for a murder case. On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee was murdered at the age of 17. The evidence in this case was very unexplainable, but of course, the state went after Hae’s ex-boyfriend Adnan who really had nothing to do with the murder. Things that prove Adnan’s innocence are the breakup between him and Hae, how Adnan thought about and his feelings towards Hae, how the times and stories told with others didn’t suit well, and his alibi. Additionally, his DNA didn’t match with items
Physical evidence was extremely lacking, and all DNA tests conducted were clear of Syed’s DNA. Therefore, it is more than likely that Syed is innocent. The evidence, or lack thereof, presented in the case of Adnan Syed v. State of Maryland proves that Adnan Syed is not guilty of the murder of Hae Min Lee.
Some of the details that Jay knew were impossible for anyone not involved in the crime to know. Jay claims that he went with Adnan to hide Hae’s car. The police later asked him where it was. “He took them to where the car was. That’s a huge thing right there.” (Koenig 8) This piece of information is huge, and completes the entire story for the police. The consistency here is the straw that broke the camel’s back, the camel being Adnan. The police said that they always suspected Adnan, of course, because he was the ex-boyfriend. Jay’s story clicked right in. When he knew where the car was left, it was the biggest thing that proved that Jay wasn’t lying and that Adnan did murder Hae. Jay had to have been with Adnan when Adnan left the car, or else Jay wouldn’t had known where the car
A lot of people wonder if Adnan Syed is guilty or innocent, today as a legal assistant I'm going to tell you one important reason why he is innocent. Adnan is not guilty because there is another potential suspect like Jay. Jay's story that "proves" Adnan's guilt, has changed every interview and testimony. Jay had intimate knowledge of the crime he knew things, like if he knew every single thing that Adnan was thinking about which makes everything looked suspicious. Also Jay's stories don't quite match Adnan's cell records.
What did it take to convict Adnan Syed, the supposed murderer of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, was in reality nothing more than just non-solid theoretical speculations along with inconsistencies on the opposing side. Syed was up against (Attorney’s [or is it lawyer?] Name) and her client, Jay Wilds, who is your typical pothead drug dealer. Of course as it is in just about any other case both sides claim to be innocent of the murder, but only one was found guilty despite the fact that the other did still admit to aiding in the disposing of Hae’s still warm to the touch cadaver. The logical answer for the question “How do you convict someone with little evidence?” would be that you don’t, it isn’t possible to assess a person’s guilt or situation without any proof of said crimes to have been committed, it’s just preposterous. There is always the possibility that Adnan was unjustly accused of this crime because he was a main suspect and so this label was bestowed upon him and everyone seem to think he was indeed Hae’s demise. Just about every interview with Adnan’s fellow classman thought of him as good hearted, kind, and just not the type of guy to commit such an atrocity. Even so they were easily persuaded that he did it simply because he was on trial. How impertinent, you need a thesis statement.
