In Tangerine, the main character, Paul, is very adaptable. When he’s forced into a tougher and meaner school, where the people are known to be not exactly too kind to people like himself, he fits in very well. This is largely because of how adaptable and moldable he is. At first, he’s in a stuck up school full of rich kids who haven’t been exposed to anything outside of the norm, and when he does fine there too. And he also does fine in his new environment as well. This is seen very clearly on page 124 of the book, where Victor states, “ ‘Listen, Fisher Man, here it is. If you’re gonna play with us, then you’re gonna play with us. Do you understand? … If you’re a Ware Eagle, then you’re a War Eagle.’ “. This small excerpt from the later half of the novel is very indicative of Paul finally being accepted into Tangerine Middle, and shows his adaptability. At first, he was the new fish in the pond, getting bullied around by Victor with …show more content…
She turned to him and said, ‘You’re Mike’s brother, aren’t you?’ He said, ‘Yeah’.... Then he pointed at me and said, ‘And this is Erik’s brother.’”. This excerpt might seem small, but it also shows Paul’s adaptability as well. It shows that he’s also somewhat accepted in Lake Windsor Downs, since Joey, one of the popular kids at school, is walking him around and being his friend. He’s also well known in the school if only because of his brother Erik Fisher, who’s the best kicker on the football team and is also known as ‘Mr. Generosity’ since he gave out jewelry that he stole from people. This means Paul is also adapted well to society in the upper echelons of it, in the rich kid school where people are wealthy and there isn’t really any diversity. It just shows how Paul is accepted in the rich kid school, as well as the poor kid school, which is much more tough and harder on people than Lake Windsor
From the beginning of the novel there has always been an odd vibe coming from Paul Fisher's brother, Erik Fisher. In many eyes Paul is caring, open-minded, and respectful, but Erik is the exact opposite, being more self-centered, sneaky, and egotistical. Eriks actions of being sneaking can be constant, but more seen when Paul wakes up in the middle of the night.
At the beginning of the novel, Paul is very isolated. For instance, on page 12, Paul writes, “Dad said sure thing you’re at the top of the stairs Erik's at the other end and you have two guest room in between you. This shows how Paul is not only physically isolated but also metaphorically for his emotions. On page 11,Paul is isolated by not participating in the Erik fisher football dream like the rest of his family. This shows Paul is even isolated from his family.
Paul and his family move from Houston, Texas to Tangerine, Florida. He has a brother named Erik who is a place kicker for the football team at Lake Windsor. On Paul’s first day at Lake Windsor he meets a kid named Joey Costello. When Paul finds out their is a soccer team he automatically thinks he is going to be the starter goaltender. He can’t play for Lake Windsor because of the IEP(his is blind). Then a sinkhole happens, and Paul is happy about that because Erik just lost all of his fans. Paul’s mom wanted him to go to St. Anthony’s,but Paul wanted to go to Tangerine so he could play soccer and be the starting goalie. On the first day of school Dr. Johnson had Theresa show Paul around. Paul met Victor, Tino, and Henry D. Paul and Joey were

Paul Fishers move was not a ride down a slide. It was a steep Mountain with many series of events that caused him to change as a person. from the start of the book, he believed that he was ignored by his father because he was more focused on Eric's football career. for this reason, it made Eric seem innocent in the most frequent situations (such as when he made fun of Mike’s death) and caused Paul to be afraid of him. Paul was consumed of fear, but was just hanging onto determination. With his soccer career, it kept him looking forwords instead of sideways and backwards. He would make friends that way, stay active, and keep busy. But with the cruel twist of his brother Eric, he controlled many series of events that was even to difficult to notice to the naked eye.
The relationship between the two Fisher brothers is strange and really difficult in the way they don’t get along one single bit. It states on page 3 that, “It was ‘Erik’ I was saying ‘Erik’. Dad finally understood. He looked me right in my eyes and asked ‘What do you mean by ‘Erik’ Erik what Paul?’ I stammered out, ‘Erik’ he tried to kill me!”. This explains how strange both Erik and Paul’s relationship is between each other. For which, Paul starts day-dreaming that his own brother is actually trying to kill him, meanwhile, nothing is going on. Overall, the main relationship

The Fisher family’s move drastically changed Paul's social life, when Mr. and Mrs. Fisher decided to uproot their family and begin with a fresh start in Tangerine County, Florida. The author gives evidence that the family is moving when he writes, “Take the bag, Paul. I want to have one last look around.” (Bloor1). The reader begins to understand that Paul is having to move away from all his friends, and had to make new ones. The move definitely modified his social
In the novel tangerine, the motif is used both literally and figuratively in several characters. For instance, Mom sees that Paul has horrible eyesight and thinks she is helping Paul by assigning him and IEP, but she doesn't see that it is affecting his social life in a negative way. Dad sees Eric as a huge football hero, but he doesn’t see that Eric has an awful, secret personality. This affects him and his relationship with his parents and brother in an extremely non-positive way. Also this affects his views and opinions on social life, friends, and school. The Fisher parents doesn't see the important things according to Paul.
