In Adam Gopnik’s work, “The Simple Truth About Gun Control,” Gopnik writes about how the United States of America should implement a federal law that increases the effectiveness of gun control throughout the states. Gopnik uses rhetorics such as, ethos, pathos, logos and rhetorical situation to persuade and inform his audience of how gun control laws would benefit everyone in America. Ethos is characterized as an appeal to ethics, and how the author can convey his credentials that they are worthy to write about a certain problem or dilemma. All throughout Gopnik’s work he uses facts to support his call to action. “Five thousand seven hundred and forty children and teens died from gunfire in the United States, just in 2008 and 2009” (F&S pp. 199). “Look at Harvard social scientist David Hemenway’s work on gun violence: the phrase ‘more guns = more homicide’ tolls through it like a grim bell. These two quotes are some of the facts and information that Gopnik uses to support his argument throughout his writing.
Rhetorical situation is explained as the circumstances that the author uses to communicate with the audience. The rhetorical situation contains the rhetorical act made by the writer, the issues brought to the attention of the audience by the writer, and the text or medium that it is conveyed through. The rhetorical situation for “The Simple Truth About Gun Control,” are all the rhetorics used by Adam Gopnik, to highlight the problems that the United States has with poor gun control laws, and why the audience should make an effort to strengthen the laws.
