Narrative Hook North Panola High School (NPHS) serves as a perfect model for improvement within its’ academic learning communities. Change oftentimes occurs in deliberate fashion, yet offers insight into the meticulous attention that must be given to achieve change. NPHS has traditionally struggled academically until recently. As recently as the 2009-2010 (SY), the school was on the state’s radar and labeled as “At Risk of Failing”. The graduation rate was 49.1% during this same time. In addition, students were enrolling in post-secondary institutions at a rate around 30%. Of those enrolling, 15 to 20% were actually completing the post-secondary education. The enrollment data of students in post-secondary education and completion data is compiled from the researcher and counseling staff charting students’ completion until the summer of 2015. As early as school year 2010-2011, North Panola High School was labeled as ‘Successful’ which ranks as the third highest rating by the Mississippi Department of Education. The graduation is 74% for the first time and projected to be higher when the accountability results are released. According to official test results found on Mississippi Department of Education’s website, http://reports.mde.k12.ms.us/data/, the results from 2013-2014 allowed North Panola High School to be rated as a ‘B’
The author further discusses some schools similar to Anne Fox Elementary School, that have transformed and really became the academic haven for children, paving newer paths of success for their students. It gives an overview of the other chapters and lists some great changes that had taken place when these schools really adopted the principle, and the results they had received from making a change in their system. It goes to show that when our systems aren't working in terms of helping children meet their goal it is very important for us to become open to change and really believing that change and success in any child are possible as long as we believe in them. Becoming a supportive adult can make the biggest difference in a child. From this chapter I learned that being open-minded, researching new ways to improve, accepting our mistakes can really change our effectiveness in the lives of the children around
Where the school goes wrong is where the school tries to deal with issues internally instead of bringing in the elders and families from the community we have sliced our way into; as Mr. Eagle puts it, “It is never about us, without us.” He went on to describe the National Wraparound Initiative which is a needs driven versus services driven model to deal with crisis when the adults don’t know what to do. The process involves finding the important people in the life of the kid having problems, looking at ways to build up the positive traits in that kid by setting short and long term goals that are
Herndon High School has embraced the following mission statement, “All Hornets Are Capable of Success, No Exceptions!” Herndon became a Kids At Hope school. Herndon encourages students to believe in their individual potential and challenge themselves to define success. They understand the importance of finding hope in the face of adversity. Students when presented with challenges see the opportunity for change and growth. Last year, in the first implementation year of Kids At Hope, the HHS faculty and staff focused on creating a culture where WE BELIEVE in the success of all of our students, NO EXCEPTIONS!. The real strength of the Kids at Hope movement is the way adults interact with students and how students have come to interact with each
The class of 2027 are present day 2nd graders. Schools have the indicators which identify the students who are not on the path to graduate high school, this is the moment where intensive intervention should be provided to assist our children to have a successful academic experience.
To any prospective parent, a school needs to present all the facts about itself, so as the parent may make the choice that is best for their child. Thirty years ago, when I was in school. There was no concern about scores, diversity, etc. You just went to your local elementary, middle and high school. Today parents are much more informed and curious about where their child is going to go. To some parents, it is quite important to have their children attend a culturally diverse school. “There is a richness that comes from students working side by side with others who are not of the same cookie-cutter mold,” notes Jean Snell. Young people wind up neglecting high school for various reasons. In this circumstance, a number of students either don't have the aspiration to remain in school or they simply cannot stand to pay the tuition. In a couple of cases, the students dropout, as a result of low quality teaching. According to the article, Let Kids Rule The School by Susan Engel, she states “I recently followed a group of eight public high school students, aged 15 to 17, in Western Massachusetts as they designed & ran their own school within a school.” This quote shows that in our society today, its critical to consider who our 'associates' are in a peer learning group & how they don’t have a part like an educator.

In urban priority school districts, educators emphasize the importance of graduation. The expectation of all educators should be that every child can learn and will graduate. It is through graduation that society begins to combat poverty. In New Haven Public Schools, where graduation rates are higher than comparable districts in the state of Connecticut, they are not inclusive of all public school students. It is through collaboration with the University of Chicago and the Consortium on School Research that freshman on-track indicators have been defined and implemented in one high school in the city. It is the purpose of this study to determine the effectiveness of the use of early warning indicators to increase the high school graduation
From 1940 to present, Project Management has continuously advanced from line managers using a small set of processes that were considered nice to have to the formal assignment of one individual assigned as the Project Manager that utilized a formal methodology by which to manage the project. Often the term “best practices” is referenced within a defined methodology. Why must an organization capture best practices? What are the determining factors in base-lining a best practice? Can an organization have too many best practices? What are the impacts of establishing too many best practices that mandated by senior management for use on all projects?
going to work on ACT practices quizzes and starting to read more books that I discussed in session one. Overall, I see myself making progress and I know what work I should put into finish achieving my goals.
District 47 has the mission of educational excellence for all students. Quality education requires community participation and shares responsibility, as well as it “demands a commitment to the physical, emotional, social, and academic needs of learners.” (Crystal Lake Elementary District 47 , 2002-2017) However, English Language Learners have been underrepresented in Gifted and Talented Programs at District 47. Currently, out of 13 elementary schools in District 47, only two Elementary School have one student enrolled in a gifted and talented program called “Extended Curriculum.” One of them attends North
More students are going to college that are from a diverse background, socioeconomic status, culture, etc and many are underprepared for school (Kuh, Kinzie, Shuh, Whitt & Associates, 2005).
