1. How did you select this research study to analyze? That is, what search terms did you use? What database did you use? What was your rationale for selecting this particular study to analyze over the others identified in the search results? What is the full reference for the study in APA format?
When searching for research studies about Academic Clustering I used the SportDiscus through the University of North Florida’s Database. Using the terms Athletes and Academic Clustering. I chose this article because I selected another one of their research studies and believe they provide a great deal of background information on the topic as well as great research that can be used to improve the academic experience of athletes. Fountain and Finley seem very well

What was the research question? (Some authors are more general and state only a purpose for the research study. If so, indicate the purpose.)
The purpose of the study is to study academic clustering and race to determine “whether it merits entrée into discussions that traditionally centered on graduate rates, academic fraud and academic support” (2009, p.5). The three research questions they posed were; (1) Does academic clustering occur among ACC football players? (2) Is there a difference of clustering when considering White and Minority subgroups? (3) Are there multiple majors at these schools that exceed the threshold to be considered clustered?.
4. What were the source of the data collected? For example, who were the participants? What was the sample? What sites for research data collection were used? And/or What documents were studied?
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) consist of 12 schools at the time of this study in 2006. They used data from 11 out of the 12 schools and used 394 upperclassman football players from these schools. The sample contained 41.4% White players and 58.6% Minority players. They used media guides from the 2006 season to determine the academic majors of the

Charles H. Martin wrote a compelling monograph about the journey of segregation in college sports. The book showed readers how the “color line” in college football, specifically in southern football, reflected the traditions and beliefs of southern society. The reader gets a glance into the complete segregation of college sports to the complete integration of all college sports. In the beginning, African American students could not play sports on all-white teams and they could not go to the same schools at white students or even drink from the same water fountain as white students. The reader gets to walk through the history of the integration of college sports with Martin to eventually see full integration.
The landscape of college football has changed so dramatically, it would appear to be unfair to today’s SWAC athletes to compare their situation to those of players three decades ago. Hampering contemporary players is too many options to play.
Identify the topic, and describe specific research related to the topic (describe the study, sample, findings, important points from the discussion in the research – describe any variables that may influence the findings of the research). What was the purpose of this study? (i.e., what question(s) did the authors want to answer?)
To figure out the likelihood of a high school football player’s success in college over 100 high school head football coaches were surveyed about their views on qualities high school football players need to move to the next level. The surveys were mailed, emailed, and followed by several phone calls if no response was received within four to six weeks. All coaches surveyed were members of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and have had high school football players recruited by division one colleges within the last five years. The survey questions sought the following details about the football players: (1) Academic ability; (2) Athletic ability; (3) Self-determination; (4) Character; (5) History of overcoming adversities. Lastly, the end goal after the surveys have been collected and evaluated is to offer high school football players valuable information about what is needed to be considered for a four-year college scholarship.
Anecdotal information found in interviews of former student-athletes reveal the effects of NCAA regulations on the academic proficiency of student-athletes. Rashad McCants, a former basketball player at the University of North Carolina, discussed the academic proficiency of students when interviewed in the 2016 documentary, “The Business of Amateurs.” In his interview with director and former collegiate athlete Bob DeMars, McCants opened up saying that students lacked the most basic academic skills, and “You got kids that are reading and doing math at a third grade level, but when it comes to these universities, these kids keep getting passed along for what they can do on the field, on the court, in the gym; when in actuality they should still be in elementary school” (DeMars).
What was your rationale for selecting this particular study to analyze over the others identified in the search results?
This study will be a prospective cohort study conducted with all Athletic American Conference football teams, which includes: East Carolina University, University of Central Florida , University of Cincinnati, University of Connecticut,
In the article, "Between a ball and a harsh place: A study of Black Male Community College Student-Athletes and Academic Progress," by Horton, Horton, Jr, research was conducted about how black male community college student athletes and the relationship between their ability to do well in school, compared to other non-student athletes. In this article, I will be discussing the different parts of the research process that is used throughout the reading. In the following, I will be discussing; the research question, variables, review of literature, methods and design, results, and further research.
Athletes in college receives a lot of attention, through their practices and performance on and off the field.be. They uplift the names of their colleges and give it a name that would otherwise not be acquired. They make their college mates proud of their college, and they may boost enrolment of many others, which would benefit the school. Athletics stand a position to earn a school other benefits, not only to the players but other students too. They may win study scholarships for their school mates by their exemplary performance (Owens et al 20).
African American males have excelled in many collegiate sports today. The main sports they are funneled in to excel are football, basketball, and track. In the past, African American men could participate in the sports but were not given respect. Now young African American men are being recruited for their hard work and God-given talents to play on a collegiate team. The demographics of African American athletes in sports especially division I has increased over time. In a 2012 report, African American males compromised 22 percent of all of division I athletics, in football 43.2 percent, and in basketball 57.2 percent (Lapchick, Hoff, and Kaiser 2013). Also, when they progress to the next level demographics show that approximately

Literature surrounding athletic participation and its impact on the college experience is well documented (LaForge & Hodge, 2011). Many scholars purport that athletic participation enhances the academic experience, while others argue that it creates a divide between colleges’ missions and student-athletes lived campus experiences. To support this claim, Lawrence, Henedricks & Ott (2007) found in their study that nearly one-third of faculty who responded to their survey indicated that they believed that academic standards are lowered to achieve success in the sports of football and basketball. One question that is often posed by
