There is a high probability that most people have heard of the saying, “Big Brother is watching you.” The saying comes from George Orwell’s book, 1984. A story which depicts a nightmarish view of society. Big Brother plays a key role throughout the novel for his surveillance state. People hear about political issues all over the news and form their own opinions on them, but are they really deciding beliefs for themselves or are they just believing whatever the media tells them? Because of the modern day media biased, many people do not think independently, even when they think they are. The novel 1984 was written by George Orwell at the closing of the Second World War, where the political ideologies of the Stalin and Hitler regimes are combined and amplified. The story is set in Airstrip One, a province in the highly impoverished superstate of Oceania which is under the control of a totalitarian government. Oceania is also in perpetual war with three other superstates, and the Party utilizes various methods to retain their absolute control over the entire population. The Party runs under the ideology Ingsoc, a term used by the Party for English Socialism. The story revolves around the life of Outer Party member Winston Smith who unsuccessfully attempts to rebel against the Party and is ultimately erased from existence. By controlling every aspect of a citizen’s life and preventing the formation of political opposition, the Party is able to maintain their superiority. The Party uses three main tactics to remain in power: public manipulation, widespread government surveillance, and the concept of fear.

It is quite obvious that a balance between both privacy and security is necessary to please both sides, yet steps to achieve this goal are not being made in the right direction. Privacy is about respecting individuals, however this level of respect is often lacking in many communities, George Orwell’s renowned novel 1984 explores this absence further. 1984 is an exaggerated representation of the extremes of privacy vs security, where the citizens are being constantly watched by the government, subsequently losing the little privacy they had. Much like Fahrenheit 451 and society today, in this dystopian novel people are watched even in their own home through telescreens by the omniscient leader known as Big Brother who controls everything, even the citizens’ language, and their history. These citizens do not even have freedom of thought.

In George Orwell’s 1984 Power is gained most effectively through control, fear and violence. Compared to a government like that of America’s, 1984 creates a more threatening structure of government where the public is limited from freedom and happiness. 1984 shows a world of a society where only the upper class has power and freedom from the harsh treatment that the general population receives. The idea of Big Bother makes the population of Oceania believe they are being watched over by a powerful force and oppresses them so they feel powerless and unable to do anything against a “great” force like Big Brother. The well-being of others depends on their willingness to agree with Big Brother and abide by their laws, if you think otherwise then you will be an accuser of thought-crime will be vaporized and removed from society or harshly punished through rigorous treatment and torture methods as was Winston and Julia. Power creates problems for others in which they do not deserve.

After capturing Winston Smith for thought crime, O’Brien describes real power as “tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your choosing” (Orwell 266). By this he explains that true power is being able to choose what people minds think.
