The definition of Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or a organization. A leader is someone who is willing to do take responsibility for someone else, someone who will lead them to success or a better path. The qualities of a leader is having integrity, compassion, and the ability of making wise decision. Many people say military generals are the most important leaders of them all besides the President of the United States which in 1860 was Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was a big leader of the Civil War in 1861. The general of the Union in 1864 was Ulysses S.Grant. Grant to many people wasn’t as good a president as he was a general. While Grant was president,he worked hard to make sure the fifteenth amendment was made so African Americans could vote.A reason why people believe Grant wasn’t a good president was because he didn’t understand politics and people think that is why his presidency was so corrupted. Many people followed him because of his loyalty and his honesty but many people didn’t like how he didn’t give much to the main picture but to a lighter picture. …show more content…
Lee. Robert used very unique and intelligent plans to win over his enemies on the North since the North had advantages in the war.To many Robert E.Lee is described as the great hero of the Southern cause but some also differ from that because of the Battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg happened in 1863,during this time Robert ordered a assault to the middle of the Northern line,it was a unfortunate attack. The South never recovered from the things they lost that day. During the rest of the war Robert tried very hard fighting off the impossible and soon led to him surrendering to Ulysses S.Grant in
The American Civil War was extremely important to the time period. The outcome of the war decided what would be America’s foundation – equality or slavery. Robert E. Lee fought for the south, while Ulysses S. Grant fought for the north. Despite his fighting platform being in the defense of slavery, Robert E. Lee’s military genius cannot be ignored. Grant as well had his strengths and weaknesses, but in very different parts of his life than that of Lee. Bill Offer, a history professor at Panola Community College, said, “History may never see two men so different than that of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant.” Although he lost the war, I believe that Robert E. Lee proved to be the better general because he was more qualified, he followed

Ulysses S. Grant was not as well known at the start of the Civil War as Robert E. Lee but proved to be just as valuable during the war. As a soldier, Grant believed, “When in doubt, fight.” And he did fight. He won fame for demanding unconditional (complete) surrender from the Southern commanders he was fighting. In fact, people in the North began saying Grant’s initials, “U.S.,” stood for “Unconditional Surrender.” In battle, Grant was tough and hard. He was not “a retreating man.” Soon Grant was made a general. He became a leading figure of the war in the West. In 1863 he captured the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. He starved the city into surrender.
The Civil war had many great leader and they also had really bad leader’s. The two great leader are Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E Lee. Ulysses S Grant was a leader for the Union and Robert E Lee was the leader of the confederates and lead them to a lot of victory in the war. Ulysses S grant was a kind of guy who didn’t like waiting. Robert E Lee was a military expert but he never on the battlefield.
Robert E. Lee was Abraham Lincoln’s First choice to be the general of the Union army during the civil war. Lee responded to Lincoln’s request by saying the he hates slavery and he hates succession but he won’t fight against his home state of Virginia. Lincoln’s goal for the civil war wasn’t originally to free all of the slaves it was instead to try and keep the Union together.
Ulysses S. Grant had a big part in the Civil War because he was the leader of the Union’s army and soon would become president. Ulysses S. Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant on April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. His named was soon changed because of a writing error on his first day at the United States Military Academy. He was the commander and chief of the Union and lead the army against the confederacy. He was chosen by Lincoln of all his victories like the battles at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga.
In the end of the Civil War. We will consider Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant to all be hero’s The two generals will earn a great reputation and will go down as one of the best generals for the years to come. These two changed todays American History and how we can know better understand how the war actually came about. We know that these two made life decisions out on the battle field.
The American Civil War was a major conflict that occurred on April 12, 1861. This war was fought between the United States of America, led by Ulysses S. Grant, and the Confederates States of America, led by Robert E. Lee. On July 21, 1861, in Prince William County, Virginia, near the city of Manassas, the first battle of the Civil War had begun. The first battle was called “The First Battle of Bull Run,” also known as “Battle of First Manassas.” The Civil War was fought mainly because of slavery and the unity of the nation. While the North was industrialized, the South remained agricultural, so, therefore, the South needed slaves to help work in the fields. The Union had around 2,100,000 soldiers and the majority of them were white boys and men that were generally aged between 18 to 45 at first. But, after a while, on May 22, 1863, the U.S. War Department enabled free escaped African-American men to serve as enlisted men in the war. With many struggles and concerns in the beginning, the African-American soldiers not only gained military skills, but they also gained courage, strength, support, and began to
Grant and General Robert E. Lee were great at being Generals for their armies but only one could come out on top and that was General Grant. President Lincoln made an amazing choice when he chose General Grant to come and combat General Lee and try to end the Civil War before the end of his term; President Lincoln was up for reelection at this time and know that if he lost the election who ever won would sue for piece and the past four years of fighting would have been for nothing and President Lincoln did not want the lives lost to have been for nothing in the end and the fight for slavery and to keep the country together to have been for nothing as well. General Grant won the war because he did not back down from General Lee and even though it cost him a great deal of men in the process he ended the war and kept the country as a whole instead of two different nations or the south having won and slavery lasting for longer than it actually did in the United States. General Lee on the other hand did put up a good fight and was able to hold off for a while but did in the end fall to General
Abraham Lincoln wanted to free slaves so he was on the north side and the south general Robert e. lee was with the south for slavery and the north won the civil war and all the slaves were freed and that’s how Abraham Lincoln became one of the famous presidents there was in the history And Robert E.Lee was a famous confederate general that is famous in the south he led the south to fight the north he had strategy to win the wart while Mary and the children spent their lives on Mary’s father’s plantation Lee stayed committed to his military obligations. His Army loyalties moved him around the
The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most famous battles of the Civil War. The battle was fought from July 1 to July 3 near Gettysburg. The famous battle was between Robert Lee and his Northern Virginia Army and George Meade and the North's Army of the Potomac, The Union. The original leader of the Army of the Potomac was General Joseph Hooker, but President Lincoln relieved Hooker of his duties and named Meade the new General of the Army. Many soldiers died from both sides during this battle and that is the reason it is known as one of the bloodiest battles. The Battle of Gettysburg was General Robert Lee's second attempt at invading the North and there was a definite aftermath to this battle.
There have been many generals that have served under their respective sides during the Civil War. Generals that come into mind are the Confederates Robert E. Lee, who is arguably the best general to have ever served in the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant who was one of the finest Union generals that Abraham Lincoln found, but there was one general that turned the chapter for the union in the Civil War, William T. Sherman. The Union underwent a stage where they needed help badly. They had absolutely no advantage whatsoever against Robert E. Lee and the South. They lost the 1st/2nd Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chattanooga, Battle of Antietam, Seven Days Battle, etc. They were doomed. Although the Union was at a constant fall, the rise of William Sherman brought the Unions troubles and the confederates down. William T. Sherman went into war because the Union had no more options. He himself was also out of options. He’s going through a turning point in his career as well. When he got the job, his mindset of torturing the Confederates changed the perspective on how the South were going to attack the north. It even made Lee think a little bit on what he would do next. Who knows where the Union would be without the leadership of Sherman. His incredible guts/determination/leadership in many battles show that he truly belongs in the Civil War elite.
