American forces in the south, between 5,000 and 7,000 men, were based at Charleston under the command of General Benjamin Lincoln. Lincoln recognized that he would need assistance from the French navy and army to retake Savannah. On September 3, he learned that the French forces under the command of Admiral Comte d’Estaing were en route to Savannah, bringing with them ships-of-the-line and 4,000 soldiers. On September 11, Lincoln marched out of Charleston with 2,000 Continentals to link up with d’Estaing. Arriving first, d’Estaing began offensive operations to take the city. He initially offered Prevost an opportunity to surrender, but Prevost demurred, hoping that reinforcements would arrive. He was given twenty-four hours. This reprieve would prove in the end to be pivotal, as 1,000 men arrived to support Prevost's force just as Lincoln arrived to support d'Estaing. The Allied forces, when fully assembled, numbered near 7,000. Defending Savannah was a force totaling 2,500 men. Faced with overwhelming odds, Prevost organized a solid defensive plan.

Is Mary Surratt guilty? Mary Surratt is being accused of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and is being hanged for it. Some people say that Dr.Mudd did it and other people say that Mary did it but who really killed Abraham Lincoln? At the same time, when more closely examined, the quotes and speeches actually leaned towards his lack of strong opinion on the outcome of slavery. Lincoln is perceived as the most famous revolutionary of American history, but he does not live up to his legacy of being the eradicator of forced servitude.

Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States, and the first American president to be assassinated. He was assassinated on April 14, 1865 at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. John Wilkes Booth did not act alone in the assassination of Lincoln, he worked with six other people.

They knew that Mary Surratt was associated with Booth, so they quickly drove to the conclusion that she was guilty and she deserved to be hanged, her trial was rushed and unfair . Mary Surratt did not receive a fair trial and did not deserve execution.

Almost everything in life or death starts with a plan, and that was no different for John Wilkes Booth. He and his co-conspirators, all southern Confederates, knew what they wanted, and originally that didn’t include President Lincoln’s death. They had wanted to kidnap him, take him to _______, and hold him for ransom. However, the main reason for such a drastic measures by the confederates was so that they could promote a trade with the North, the trade of men. They hoped to trade Lincoln for the Confederate prisoners of war.

Why did John Wilkes Booth want to kill Lincoln?  Booth wanted to kill Lincoln because he didn’t liked how Lincoln wanted to let black people vote. But then he attended  Lincoln’s speech and Lincoln was trying to back out of letting the blacks vote.  After this John W. Booth was so mad that he was trying to get a group together to kidnap Lincoln. This then led to Lincoln’s  assassination.(9)

As Ulysses S. Grant, Commanding General of the Union Army of the United States of America, during the Civil War, I strongly believe that our President, Abraham Lincoln is innocent regarding all charges being pressed on him today. I was born in Ohio on April 27in 1822, and I was proud to be able to serve during in the Civil War, after joining a volunteer regime in Illinois, and quickly showing off my skill and ascending the ranks, to eventually be appointed Commanding General of the Union Army. The charges that The accusation most closely related to me personally is Lincoln’s subverting the efforts of the Union in the war by appointing military officers not fit for such a responsibility, and then proceeding to manipulate their decisions and

The assassination of Abraham Lincoln further alienated the North and the South after the Civil War because his death did not allow his plan for reconstruction to go through and unify them.

A book that I feel should become a modern classic is Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. While this book is a biography or memoir in the sense, it focuses mainly on how Lincoln chose the three men who served with him in his Cabinet. Its other main focus is the chronicle of how Lincoln was able to abolish slavery through the freedom law, the Emancipation Proclamation - while in the midst of the Civil war.
