Life does not begin at conception. A fetus is not worthy of our moral consideration. A two-week old embryo is not morally equivalent an adult. These are some of the controversial statements posed by the debates regarding the morality of fetuses that have perplexed and divided human beings since the beginning of recorded history. Attitudes towards the moral status of the fetus and abortion have been recorded in every civilization in human history. For example, the early Greeks believed that the soul was introduced after birth, thus believing that the fetus was not worthy of moral consideration. In the Christian Bible, there are various passages that refer to abortion as a loss of property rather than a loss of life. Morality of the fetus and abortion are topics that date back to even the earliest civilizations. However, thousands of years later in modern times, abortion is still a taboo subject around the world. Why is it that one of the most important decisions that a woman will ever make in her life must be kept in the shadows? Why are we scared to publicly state our opinion on whether we are pro-life or pro-choice? We fear being ostracized due to our beliefs and stances on what quite possibly might be one of the most important topics in the world.
The morality of abortion has been argued since humans have existed yet only in 1973 following the controversial “Roe V. Wade” case did abortion become legal in America, perhaps the most advanced and developed country in the
Pro-life versus pro-choice has always been a controversial issue due to religious reasons and our countries constitutional rights. The woman’s right to have a say on her pregnancy has slowly progressed throughout our countries history, while only allowing women the right to make their own choice on whether or not to keep their unborn child within the past 50 years. “The 1973 Roe v. Wade decision guaranteed a woman 's right to an abortion,” states Judith S. Baughman, editor of American Decades. However, this was not always the case and still causes controversy among many people living in America due to religious reasons.

Abortion has been around for quite some time. Laws have been set allowing it and banning it during different periods of time. The procedures that can be done are all very different. There is a medical abortion involving drugs and there are surgical abortion involving a more invasive procedure. There are also different points of view on it. There are those who fully support the termination of a pregnancy and those who are completely against it. There are many factors to consider and very different ideas out there.
Before discussing the Roe vs. Wade case, let’s first begin by presenting a brief history reflection of abortion in the United States. The history of abortion dates all the way back to the 1820’s-1830. In 1821 Connecticut passes the first law that would restrict abortion; numerous states followed Connecticut’s law and began to implement
To be pregnant under the age of 18 is a controversial issue. As minor, she may choose to give up the child. As a minor, she may choose to give the child up for adoption, keep the child, or undergo an abortion. Many are opposed to the latter option, which is the early termination of a pregnancy. The root of this issue began with the Supreme Court’s decision on the legality of an abortion in Roe v. Wade and has stemmed into a debate of pro-choice or pro-life. The decision led to the polarization of the public, since the conservatives were against abortion being a constitutionally protected right. Pregnant women should have control over their body, and yet through case law conservatives are able to pass restrictions on when the abortion procedure would be done (Henretta, J. A., Hinderaker, E., Edwards, R., & Self, R. O., 2014).
According to Webster Dictionary, abortion is “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus”. There are two sides when it comes to abortion: pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life supporters are usually religious individuals, individuals who believe it is a kind of murder, and/or people who believe in the sanctity of life. Pro-choice supporters are normally individuals who believe a woman has the right to her own body, it is not a form of murder, and some individuals believe that there are limits. The main point of disagreement between both of these sides is whether an embryo/ fetus is a human so should it be legal or illegal and is it immoral?
“I have also said that anyone who doesn 't feel sure whether we are talking about a second human life should clearly give life the benefit of the doubt. If you don 't know whether a body is alive or dead, you would never bury it.” That was just one quote said by Ronald Reagan on the topic of abortion. He also said, “I 've noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.” Many people, like Reagan once was, are against abortion and believe that it is morally and ethically wrong. Likewise, many people, including Alan Dershowitz, support it. Alan has said, “I can 't find anything in the Constitution that says you prefer the life of the mother, or the convenience of the mother if it 's an abortion by choice, over the potential life of the fetus. Look, I think women, if they 're required to not have abortions, could die and could - so I favor a woman 's right to choose.” Abortion has been an extremely controversial topic since the 1960s, and has grown into an even more controversial and sensitive topic as the decades went by. There are two main sides to the argument on abortion: pro-life and pro-choice. People who are pro-life, such as myself, are against abortion, and their argument mainly defends the unborn baby. People who are pro-choice support abortion, and their argument is solely based on the physical, mental, and economic well being of the mother. The controversial topic of abortion has two sides, with the pro-life side
As early as 1550 B.C., Egyptians were performing abortions. Egyptians documented the techniques they used to perform abortions and by the Middle Ages, the concept of abortion had spread globally (PRB). Knowing the idea, of terminating a pregnancy, was being performed in 1550 B.C., the number of babies lost to this horrific death will never truly be known. Since 1969, the CDC started documenting the numbers of legal abortions obtained in the United States. Roe vs. Wade was the infamous court case that made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, in 1973, that assisted abortion in becoming completely legal. The United National Library of Medicine published that since that day in 1973 abortion rates peaked but remained continuous through the
In the United States there are more than a billion abortions performed each year. Since the court case Roe vs Wade in 1973 more than 56 million babies have been murdered in the United States before they had the chance to take their first breath (Snyder, Michael). These statics along with many more show the huge injustice that is happening in the country I call home.
Nowadays, in this world, there are a lot of problems that can make tremendous conflicts for human beings. They are very complicated and bring a lot of argument and nobody knows what the exact answer is. They also have pros and cons. One of the most complex problems is abortion. This is due to moral and ethical values which we all have. The majority of us are Christians or are brought up in that kind of ambiance which means that as small children we were taught values that are based on the bible such as that famous phrase “Thou shall not kill”. This phrase relates to this topic because an abortion is the murder of a human being.
Abortion has been a complex social issue in the United States ever since restrictive abortion laws began to appear in the 1820s. By 1965, abortions had been outlawed in the U.S., although they continued illegally; about one million abortions per year were estimated to have occurred in the 1960s. (Krannich 366) Ultimately, in the 1973 Supreme Court case of Roe v. Wade, it was ruled that women had the right to privacy and could make an individual choice on whether or not to have an abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy. (Yishai 213)
One of the most controversial situations in the United States is abortion. A couple of decades ago when abortion was illegal, thousands of woman died for attempting to terminate the child’s life themselves or with unprofessional help. On January 22, 1973, in the Roe v. Wade case, Supreme Court legalized abortion in all 50 states. This has saved thousands of woman’s lives and should remain legal.
Even though religion has been used to make abortion an issue of morality, which fundamentally it is, we have to keep in mind how central the topic of abortion has been to the political atmosphere throughout the United States and more so, in Capitol Hill. The Republican’s counterpart, Democrats have accepted importance abortion has across party lines, as highlighted by Politico : “the politics of abortion are already vexing vulnerable senators from both parties on the 2018 ballot” (Schor 2017). More over, Democrats distinguish themselves from Republicans as they presume that women have the ability to legally chose what they do and do not do with their bodies since “choice is a fundamental, constitutional right,”(Democratic Party on
Approximately 50% of all pregnancies in the United States are not planned, yet 42% of the unplanned pregnancies end in abortion (Stacey). To prevent unplanned pregnancies, alternate methods of prevention or contraceptives are utilized. A commonly expressed answer for why contraception is used as a means for preventing unplanned pregnancies is control; control over a life altering decision. At the opposite end of life altering decisions is a need to control how life is ended or a need to control death. There is a visible correlation in the movements of birth and the end of life as explained in the book titled Medical Euthanasia: From Aiding the Dying to Hastening Death. In the book, readers discover that “Both
Abortion is defined in several ways all of which stop a pregnancy. There are different ways of abortion, which are spontaneous abortion, surgical abortion, and medical abortion. Abortion has been arguable topic for decades. One can neither believe abortion to be good nor bad. The idea of individuality and human life is not quite the same. Idea of human life has come from conception; simultaneously on the other hand, fertilizer eggs used for in vitro fertilization are also human lives but eggs unable to implant are routinely thrown away. Would you like to call it a murder and if not, then how is abortion a murder? Arizona is known as a state that is very much against abortion. In 2012; Arizona was named Americans United for Life’s “Pro-life All-Star.” Since 1995, center for Arizona policy has supported 30 bills that have been signed into law that promote pro-life.
