Abigail Williams was known to be a good person in the town of Salem. But what the people cannot see is that she was really a cold hearted woman who only wanted all the attention on her. Abigail hid her flaws of lust, mendacity, and jealousy. She was the servant of John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth Proctor. She was supposed to be a godly woman. To the people of the town she was known to be just a child but she hid a lot more.
One of the main flaws of Abigail Williams was that she had lust. She was in love with a man who already had a wife and waited for him all the time. The man she loved was John Proctor. Their romance began and John did not try to stop it. . He hid it from his wife but she got suspicious and threw Abigail out on the street. She quotes, “John- I am waiting for you every night.” which shows that she wanted to be with him every night and wanted him to continue to be away from his wife. She also quotes, “I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near.” This shows that John also felt for her.
Another flaw of Abigail was mendacity. She lied to everyone especially in the court. She was asked questions on whether she participated in witchcraft in front of the court and lied. She began to go on a rant of her love of Jesus and made everyone that was innocent look guilty. She

She would do anything to have her way and accuses the people John loves most to get him all to herself. Through the entire trial that the town of Salem had, Abigail was the main leader of the girls and the entire pretense that they did to make the court believe that Satan had come to them and took over their spirits. She threatened people by saying she would accuse their loved ones of witchcraft. The girls had the court wrapped around their fingers for a period of time and a lot of people were put through a hard time and even death because of the pretense that the girls made
One of the characters in the story is Abigail Williams. She is a young manipulative lying girl that will do anything for her love, John Proctor. Abigail is held responsible for the charges of many women in Salem at the time. While many people view Abigail Williams as a saint, she is actually motivated by selfishness.
Abigail is a selfish person since the beginning she was willing to do anything to get Proctor to herself and get out of trouble. For example she falsely accused people of witchcraft like Mary Warren and Elizabeth Proctor just so that she won't get in trouble and get Proctor to himself.. She wanted Proctor to herself even though he was married to Elizabeth and was willing to do anything to take her spot.
The first reason Abigail can be characterized as despicable is because she lets her jealousy of Elizabeth Proctor cloud her judgement which eventually leads to the imprisonment of Elizabeth. Abigail is jealous of Elizabeth because she is married to John Proctor and during the time that Abigail was working for the Proctor’s, John and Abigail had an affair. Elizabeth sensed the feelings between the two and she understandably dismissed Abigail. Abigail tried to accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft to take her out of the picture so she could marry John and have him to herself because she believes that John is in love with her and mistakes his blushes in church for affection for her rather than shame for his sins of lechery. Abigail gets upset with John when he tells Abigail that he loves his wife and will not let her be hanged even if it means outing Abigail for lying and himself for lechery. Abigail also claimed that Elizabeth wanted to
Abigail William’s aggressive personality easily persuades the other girls to follow her footsteps, and back up anything and everything she says. This personality also frightens people in the courtroom to question her truthfulness, or her relation with John Proctor. Due to her forceful behavior, the girls support Abigail, and therefore become entangled in her web of lies, sins, and murders.
One on Abigail’s villainous traits is her deviousness. For Example, Abigail threatens the girls by saying“...I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ heads on the pillow next to mine and I have seen reddish work done at night and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down” (Miller 13). This shows that Abigail is devious because she threatens to kill the girls if they tell the truth so she doesn’t get
Her thoughts were of a mad man. Only thinking of one goal to accomplish, doing anything and everything in her power to achieve that one goal. Her actions were just as mad. She deliberately lied to everyone in the town of Salem, just to have one woman put to death. She even purposefully harmed herself to make sure that Mary Warren was sentenced to death. Her interactions with other people were just as dark. She acted somewhat respectful to one man, John Proctor. That was only to regain his favor though. She deceived everyone in the village of Salem, all for her own selfish needs. Abigail Williams alone caused one of the most gruesome events in this nation’s history. Let’s just hope we can learn from the mistakes made at
In "The Crucible" Abigail Williams was the person they blame for everything that’s gone bad in Salem. Abigail is a jealous, dishonest , and self confident person. She was jealous of Elizabeth , dishonest about Tituba bewitching her , and self confident at the end of the play because she was trying to control everyone . At the end of the play Abigail tries to control everyone. Abigail is a very hateful person and love to lie on mostly about everything.
Abigail. A sweet name with a sour soul. A manipulating, conniving, and deceiving young woman. Abigail Williams is an eighteen year old girl living Salem, Massachusetts who has no problem hurting or even killing anyone for what she wants. And what she wants is John Proctor. A thorough analysis on Abigail Williams reveals that the unknown painting by Avery Penn best represents her character because of the utilization of colors, the texture, and the paintings' imagery.
Abigail Williams commands both fear and respect throughout the story. Not only does Abigail have a powerful influence over Salem, but also her power and social status intensify tremendously. The justice system plays a huge part in heightening her influence in Salem. Abigail is the leader of the girls who are being accused of witchcraft and demands them for respect. She too becomes frightened and cultivates a deadly influence on people, especially the other girls. She threatens them by telling them to keep everything they did in the woods a secret. Keeping it all a secret will help prevent the public from creating any false concepts or them being accused of witchcraft. Many people who play a role with Abigail at this time feel threatened.
One of Abigail’s main flaws is jealousy. She was in love with a man named John Proctor, who was married to somebody else. John Proctor and Abigail had had an affair previously, before the accusations of witchcraft started. Abigail was jealous because she wanted John Proctor, but he did not want her. Not only did this make her jealous, but this also made her dour. In Act one of The Crucible, Abigail and John Proctor have a conversation, saying “John-I am waiting for you every night.” John Proctor then says, “Abby, I never give you hope to wait for me.” Abigail says, “I have something better than hope, I think!” John Proctor then turns down Abigail by saying, “Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be comin’ for you more (Miller Act I). This is can be an intimation from John to Abigail that he does not love her anymore. These quotes prove that Abigail was eager for John Proctor’s love, but that he did not want to love her back.
One of the final tests of Abigail’s character was to what degree of evil she really was. Although seeming innocent among the girls in court, Abigail was the source of all evil in the town at this time. Many times throughout the story, Abigail had opportunities to take her evil manipulating personality to a new high, and she always did. A good example of this is when Abigail had a chance to save Marry Warren, and confess to faking their behavior of fainting when a supposedly bewitched person was before them. Instead of taking a step towards goodness, she kept evil on her side and decided to show no remorse for Marry Warren.
Abigail Williams is an individual that only cares for herself. She lacks a conscience, and governs her actions with her ‘love’ for John Proctor. She wants to kill Elizabeth and marry John to gain a higher social status within the community.
Abigail had many flaws throughout the story. One of her flaws includes lust. Abigail was involved in a secret affair with John Proctor, who happened to be married to Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail illustrated lust by telling John, “John- I am waitin’ for you every night.” This suggests that Abigail does have something secret going on with John. Abigail also says, “I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near!” This justifies that they have a relationship because she told John that he
Abigail is a highly jealous character, concentrating her jealousy on Elizabeth Proctor. This jealousy is driven by lust and her desire for John Proctor. Abigail served as a servant in the Proctor household and after an affair with her husband John, Elizabeth fired her. She still resents Elizabeth for this as she is still in love with John. She clearly says to John, "You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!" Abigail is still in love with John and she assumes the converse. Her love for John only causes her resentment for Elizabeth to strengthen. She hates John Proctor's wife and in her conniving ways she attempts to inspire the same views of Elizabeth in John's mind. Saying things to him such as, "She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me, She is a cold, sniveling woman." Abigail fabricates stories in attempt to steel John from Elizabeth. She is a manipulative liar that does and says as she pleases in order to get what she wants.
Abigail Williams, the biggest player in this triangle, is introduced as a cunningly deceitful person. She worked at the Proctor household previously and had an affair with John Proctor and now desperately wants to marry him. She feels that Elizabeth is unworthy of him and abhors her (“Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly
