The Crucible was a playwright made by Arthur Miller. Arthur Miller was inspired by the McCarthy Hearings, which led him to make the story on the Crucible. The Crucible was based on the real events which were the Salem Witch Trials which happened in the late 1600’s. The characters and events of the Crucible were based on the real events and characters that lived through the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trials was one of the darkest and most injustice times in history and will be remembered to this day. The community of the town of Salem were based on their reputation and morals, but as people were accused of witchcraft their respect has been wiped away. The protagonist John Procter had been known to have a good reputation and not have anything to do with the community, but inside he was not a good person; he committed one sin that nobody knew that he did which was Adultery with Abigail Williams who was the …show more content…
John Procter knows Abigail Williams has been lying and the main reason why she accused him. John Procter told everyone that Abigail Williams has been lying to everyone about the witches, but She told the town of Salem that he committed adultery with her, which John had no choice to admit his bad deeds. The more he fights back, the more he is disgraced by the town. The town of Salem now knew he was not a so good guy, but he still told the truth that no one listen to. John Procter had a choice to give his name of being a witch or be hanged. John Procter had no other choice; it was a life or death situation; the other with honor, the other with dishonor. John Procter cared about his respect and name. so even though he was not witch, he chose to die with honor and not put his respect out there to live. His wife accepted this as she cared about his respect. Even if he committed bad deeds, he still had respect in
John proctor was a successful farmer who lived outside of town, Married to his wife Elizabeth Proctor. John Proctor was called over to the home of reverend parris to help determine if Abigail ,who is the niece of reverend parris, Is In fact a witch. John proctor then realizes that the rumors are true of the witchcraft talk that his has heard around town. John proctor knows the truth about Abigail but does not tell. Why? John Proctor committed MAL behavior with Abigail, He had an affair with a 17 year old girl while married to his wife Elizabeth. He knows that if he tells the truth about Abigail being a witch that the truth will come out about him and his affair, so he tells lies to keep
Adultery. Abigail Williams is the young niece of Salem's Minister, Reverend Parris, she also was once John Proctor's housemaid until his wife, Elizabeth, put her out because of the affair. Abigial was just a young girl, she felt as if her feelings for John Proctor were ‘true love’, this drove her to do some of the most unspeakable things. She was seeking vengeance on Elizabeth since she put her out on the street, “blackened her name throughout the town” and she had the man she loved. Abigail's best way of getting things done was through manipulation, which she was best at. She voluntarily used witchcraft to ‘curse’ Elizabeth and yet turned witchcraft accusations against everyone of Salem. “I will come to you in the black of the night and will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you”(19), is one threat Abigail used to keep the girls mouth shut. She was a power hungry girl who did anything to keep the power for her own selfish gains. When she realized she was losing her power she claims “I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil’s people- and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, question like a -”(100) this was her way out of the truth. This shows Abigail's true

After that John must admit to his affair with Abigail. He is arrested for witchcraft, and when Elizabeth is question about his affair by Danforth. She tells Danforth that it is a lie, trying to protect his name, causing his arrest for prejudice and witchcraft. This proves that John is trying to do good, but his past keeps coming back at
John is a very happy prideful man until he commits adultery with Abigail Williams which at the time was John and his wife, Elizabeth Proctor’s housekeeper. Elizabeth catches Abigail sleeping with John and fires her. Abigail is jealous because she is not John’s wife so she lies and says that Elizabeth Proctor is involved in witchcraft. While Elizabeth is in jail, John tries to get Mary Warren, one of the girls that is lying about witchcraft to confess but soon betrays John and continues to lie with girls. John soon confesses about sleeping with Abigail. “A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything, I know it now. I beg you, sir, I beg you—see her what she is. . . . She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a …... vengeance. . . “. Miller, A. (n.d.). The Crucible. Retrieved December 3, 2014, from http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/crucible/quotes.html. Judge Danforth brings in Elizabeth Proctor to confess if John is telling the truth but she lies and says John never committed Adultery to try and save John but it is too
The Salem witch trials was a series of accusations upon men and women; these people could either plead guilty and survive or plead innocent and be put to death. If a person pleads guilty, their allegations with the devil would be broken. Arthur Miller noticed the similarities between the Salem witch trials and the red scare of the mid 1950’s. These events inspired Miller to write The Crucible. In the American playwright Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the characters lie to manipulate others in order to protect their reputation.
John Proctor and Reverend Parris are both prominent men in Salem; however, Proctor does not care how he is seen by the town whereas Parris is willing to do almost anything to protect his reputation. Parris divulges his true feelings when talking to Abigail about his reputation, as he calls the Salem’s citizens “stiff-necked people” who, “just when some good respect is rising” for him within the parish, have called into questioned his “very character” due to Abigail’s accusations (11). In contrast to Parris’ concern about how he will be perceived, Proctor willingly admits he had an affair with Abigail, begging the men in the court to “see [Abigail for] what she is” (110). Parris attempts to coerce Abigail into compliance in order to save his name while Proctor accuses Abigail of lechery in order to save his wife. While Parris’ self-consciousness turned him into a selfish man, Proctors’ self-confidence taught him selflessness. Much like her uncle Parris, Abigail is willing to protect her reputation at all costs. When she believes Goody Proctor is ruining her name, Abigail declares “My name is good in the village! I will not have it said my name is soiled!” (12). Abigail is terrified at the thought the Salem community could believe her character was tainted. Out of concern for her reputation, she angrily blames others for seeking to spread rumors and lies about her. In contradiction, Elizabeth tells John that whatever he does “it is a good man does it” (137). Despite John’s confession to lechery and societal pressures put on her to shun him, she still believes John is a good person. Abigail’s fear of the public’s reaction has turned her into a vengeful and jealous young woman while Elizabeth’s apathetic attitude toward public opinion has allowed her to become loving and forgiving. In order to try and correct this, he attempts to expose Abigail during the testimony with Mary Warren, but when this fails he comes out with the truth of his sin. However, it is too late and he is convicted of participating in witchcraft as well. At the end of the play, Procter is asked to confess in order to be pardoned, and he does so, but he refuses to sign the confession and says, "I have three children--how may I teach them to walk like men in the world, and I sold my friends?"(Act IV). By signing the confession, John is signing his legacy away, so his children 's names will also be ruined. Again, John is choosing to die instead of devastating someone else 's life. John Proctor becomes a man who can dishonor his name in order to save another 's life, but not his own. This also proves his role as a tragic hero, because of his death at the end of the play.
John Procter is a strong man, who thrives at the chance to be right and known. But by the end of the play he questions himself saying, “Who is John Proctor, Who is John Proctor?” (act 4). The trials to John Proctor are a time of change. When Reverend Hale enters the town John leaves in disgust, he knows the girls are lying. John’s pride springs from his feeling of being smarter then the rest of the town. He was constantly found bickering with Reverend Parris about unnecessary expenses. He is worried to speak at the trials for he would condemn himself as a lecher. His wife has her finger on his button though because after the affair, she uses his guilt so he will promise to accuse Abigail. As soon as John steps into the trials he is labeled as a witch and condemned to death. But from his own pride is unable to confess. But at the same time he does not want to die for such an absurd reason.
In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Miller demonstrated that it was Abigail’s flaws- lust, jealousy, and mendacity- that led her to be responsible the most for the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem. The Crucible focuses of the finding of young girls and a slave messing around in the woods, trying to conjure spirits from the dead. Rather than admit to their actions and face the consequences, the girls accuse everyone else of the crimes they were guilty of. Abigail Williams is the person who caused much of the drama in this story. She bears much responsibility for everyone meeting with Tituba in the woods. Once Parris discovers this meeting, Abigail attempts to keep her actions a secret because it would possibly reveal her affair with Proctor. Abigail lies to cover up her affair with proctor, and to stop the charges of witchcraft in order to prevent the terrible punishments that go along with the accusations.
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams and Mrs. Putnam are are the sources of the witchcraft mysteries because they are able to use their manipulating witchcraft skills to throw the blame onto their enemies. Abigail Williams hates Elizabeth Proctor, for she had an affair with her husband,John, and still has lustful feelings towards him. Abigail used to work for the Proctor family, but was immediately thrown out because of her relationship with John, of which Elizabeth has no idea existed. Abigail believes Elizabeth hates her and calls her a “bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman” (12). This of course shows tensions between Elizabeth and Abigail. Abigail even admits she would do ANYTHING to get of Elizabeth, perhaps
Responsible for nineteen overall deaths by the end of Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, Abigail Williams is accountable for the Salem Witch Trials and surrounding hysteria. She makes false accusations against many others, and constantly manipulates others to benefit her throughout the play. Although the outside influences from her community pressures her into making the accusations she does, the main reasoning behind her actions and reactions is her own personal agenda which is obvious throughout the play. She should be held responsible for her actions and given the appropriate punishment as a result.
Quote 1: Proctor has confessed to adultery and given himself and Abigail a bad reputation. In a community like Salem this sort of behaviour resulted in punishment since it was considered unholy. The people who admit their sins are spared, and the ones who don´t are hanged, which is not the most logical approach. John´s confession is important because he is willing to have a bad reputation in order to achieve
The Salem witch trials were an event that made people act in new ways and realize new things about themselves, as we can see through John Proctor, who went from hating his actions to changing for the good, Elizabeth Proctor, who was mad at John for adultery but forgave him in the end, and with Reverend Hale, who went from accusing the good people of the town to fighting for the good. John Proctor acts as a strong man with good morals. At the beginning of the book John closes himself off and lies to Elizabeth about Abigail. After John cheats on his wife with Abigail Williams, the leader of the “so-called” Salem witches, his morals are tested. John would get mad at Elizabeth not forgiving him shown in this quote, “Spare me!
In the crucible Abigail williams is one of the main characters and she did a lot to form the story. These are three most dominant traits that Abigail williams had in the book.
A tragic hero must have tragic flaws as well, which John Proctor does not have a lack of. It is arguable that his affair with Abigail Williams is the root of the witch trials. He tries to fix it by attempting to silence her. “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby” (Miller 15.) This affair he has with Abigail is an extremely deadly flaw. Abigail starts all of the witch paranoia because of her desire to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor because she falls in love with John. When John discharges her from his home and his life, she goes on a blood buzz for Elizabeth and the rest of Salem, causing the entire tragedy of the witch trials. A broader point that Miller depicts through the effect the affair has is all of the damage that lying and unfaithfulness causes.
