The American Psychology Association (APA) represents the field of psychology and practitioners in the United States. The association has developed a set of rules and guidelines, called ethical codes that are used to maintain correct conduct of psychologists, therapists, counselors and other professionals. One of the ethical codes established by the APA is privacy and confidentiality. To ensure confidentiality, a psychologist, therapist or workers in human services need to make sure that all information or data obtained by them from their patient or client remains private and confidential. I currently hold an intern position at the Center for Family Excellence Inc. based in the Hill District. I have not personally witnessed any violation of the ethical code, privacy and confidentiality, at the site. I have had the opportunity to attend parenting classes at CFFEI where parents who have been through the court system attend the classes in order to build skills and gain parenting advice based on CFFEI’s Values for Life program. Some of the parents who attended the sessions have had their children removed from the family home and placed in foster care and others have been charged with some form of misconduct. My supervisor, who headed up the sessions, was polite, kind and …show more content…
Disregard for this code would involve taking images or recording voices without the consent of the client or a legal representative of the client. So, in the case of the parenting classes I attended, workers at CFFEI could have taken photographs of the parents without their consent and used the images to populate their website, for example. While this does seem like a fairly benign use of the images, the fact remains that an ethical code would have been
To discuss whether or not the two expert witnesses in the case of Commonwealth of Virginia versus Allen (Va. 2005) acted or behaved unethically, it is important to look at the guidelines and principles of their expertise to determine such. It is essential to revisit or review the APA Code of Ethics and the Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychologists (Professionals). From these two guidelines or documents, one can determine the proper or appropriate credentials, assessments, scope, relationships, as well as the “don’ts” covered in this discipline or respect. The documents will reveal or allow an evaluation of each expert witness’s performance or service to the client to be either ethical or unethical.
The American Counseling Association has also developed a Code of Ethics that all counselors are bound to follow to uphold the integrity of the profession. The Code of Ethics has a specific area devoted solely to research and how procedures should be handled. First and foremost, researchers should follow all federal, state, and local laws pertaining to research with human subjects (ACA, 2005). The Code of Ethics also explains that researchers are responsible for the well being of their subjects and they should take special precautions to avoid harm in any way, including physical,
I agree with Jeff Probst about what he considers to be “endlessly entertaining”. The producers create conflict and stress for the people in the show to see how they will get themselves out of the situation. I would enjoy being a producer of that show because of the entertainment one could have with messing with the contestants.
Individuals who are lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) are often discriminated against due to their sexual orientation. Hence the reason why the APA council provided guidelines for psychologist to follow when dealing with an LGB client. The guidelines includes some aspirational principles to supplement the APA ethics code, it also offers a frame work that psychologist should follow when working with LGB clients. These guidelines are intended to educate psychologist and provide recommendations about professional conduct when dealing with an LGB client. Prejudices and judgmental attitudes on the part of the psychologist sometimes contributes to the negative attitudes towards their LBG clients and reinforcing the view that their sexual orientation is problematic. Standard 3.01 on unfair discrimination based on sexual orientation is prohibited and psychologist needs to respects peoples rights and dignity as described in Principle E (Respect for People's Rights and Dignity).
In module 4 in our book it talks about codes of ethics. The APA guidelines have very similar information. one thing you have to have informed consent from your patient. Second, many people talk about using animals for experiments. Some people think it is unfair to the animals. As long as the psychologist is trained and follows the states and country laws, then they are okay to experiment on animals to find research. They try to give pain medicines and surgeries to keep the animals out of harms way and pain. They don't try to kill the animal. Third, all people that are involved in an experiment has to be voluntary, you can't make somebody be in an experiment. Fourth, psychologist try to maintain confidentiality. Fifth, they try to prevent experimental
(1963) studies would confront several violations to the APA Code of Ethics: IRB authorization, informed consent, and risk of harm. The APA Code of Ethics states that researchers must obtain an approval from IRBs prior any study takes place. Additionally, it also states that informed consent from parents when minors are involved must be obtained. Furthermore, consent of minor participants should be taken also into consideration. More importantly, this code stipulates that participants must not be at risk of harm; this includes physical and emotional distress, (Koocher & Keith-Spiegel, 2008).
I believe as a profession it is important for all psychologists to have a set of standards that all individuals should strive to meet, for this profession it is the APA Code of Ethics. Having all psychologists aspire to an ethical code gives all psychologists a sense of unity, this is particularly important when the field is so vast and includes so many different careers, especially those in the helping profession. Most importantly it is essential to have a set of ethical standards that must be followed whenever work is being completed with humans. I do not necessarily believe that one particular code of ethics would be better than another. For example, if psychologists instead followed the AU’s core values that would be acceptable so long
Several organizations face ethical dilemmas and professional challenges on a daily basis. Assistance on how to correctly approach the issue can be found in a company’s code of ethics. A code of ethics is a written set of guidelines and protocols issued by an organization to its workers and management to help them conduct their actions in accordance with its primary values and moral standards. It aids to create a unified understanding of the boundaries within an organization and the standards set for interrelating with clients and customers alike. A code of ethics is essential for all companies and business establishments, and the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American School Counselor Association is no exception. It is necessary to follow the ACA code of ethics or any company for that matter to avoid the myriad of law suits that would be filed daily. After reviewing the ACA code of ethics, I was able to relate to some of their guidelines.
The APA ethical guidelines help to ensure that all psychological research maintains the integrity that it does not do harm or conflicts with the majority of the human populations moral ethical codes. However, in some situations the APA ethical guidelines must be viewed as just that: guidelines. If a study has the potential to benefit humanity as a whole and does not result in the permanent or irreparable harm to a human being then some guidelines must be permitted to be stretched or even broken in the interest of human advancement and scientific progression. After all the goal and responsibility of a psychologist is to enhance our understanding of human behavior as well as to find ways to use this information to better society and humanity
Principle 2 of the AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding states that, “the coder must refuse to participate or conceal unethical practices or procedures and report such practices (www.ahima.org). HIMs must ensure that they set the example for their staff when it comes to ethical behavior. Often the direction of upcoding and down coding comes from a trusted superior in which the coder may be afraid to question their authority. HIMs professionals
Professional associations establish codes of ethics to ensure that clinicians uphold the standards of their association in order to protect the clients they serve and the profession they are affiliated with. This paper will compare the codes of ethics of the American Counseling Association (ACA), American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and National Association of Social Workers (NASW).
Compare and Contrast the Codes of Ethics for Health Care Executives to the Code of Ethics for Health Educators
American Psychological Association was established in 1892 with 31nmembers and it grew rapidly after World War II. Currently, in the subfield of psychology APA has around 30 divisions and 130,000 members who include researchers, clinicians, consultants, educators and students. The purpose of APA is to excel as a valuable, effective and influential organization advancing psychology as a science. The strategic goals include increasing psychology’s role in advancing health and increasing acknowledgment of psychology as a science.
We are going to explore the world of ethical issues in psychology. As in any medical or mental health fields there are rules we all must follow as professionals. In this essay today we will be exploring a case study where we have a young lady who has been stricken by a mental disability. We will be looking at the facts in which her disability was handled by a professional in the field of psychology. We also will be discussing the rights and wrongs that are presented in her case study. We will also be discussing the APA ethical codes and gain a clearer understanding of where some things went wrong and why shall we begin.
In clinical psychology, several legal issues do exist, and clinical psychologists must adhere to such legal standards. Two common legal issues are maintaining confidentiality and obtaining written informed consent. In regard to the maintenance of confidentiality, the clinical psychologists must never disclose the records of any patient or client unless required by law. This is a significant concern in clinical psychology, which the psychologist is bound by ethical codes and law. These laws necessitate the psychologist to refrain from mentioning of a patient 's treatment or the results of his or her assessment outside the appropriate context. In keeping of clients’ record, psychologists should maintain records securely, efficiently and effectively, such that the results are not predisposed to dissemination by other inappropriate individuals. Though, a psychologist has the responsibility to waive clients’ confidentiality when he suspects harm to self.
