The AAM move towards a Third World framework comes from the geopolitical circumstances of the 1960s and an affinity to Asian third-world liberation movements. The conditions among the people in power created the political opportunity for change. Growing doubt and criticism about US foreign policy, especially its pursuit of the war in Vietnam eroded support for the established leadership. In hundreds of college campuses, students organized and showed widespread dissatisfaction with the US role in Vietnam. These campuses were also a source of growing social interaction between Americans born of different Asian descents. In May 1972, Evelyn Yoshimura of the monthly Asian American newspaper-magazine Gidra had the opportunity to tour the People’s Republic of China as part of the Asian American People’s Delegation. She recalled that she placed the most important aspect of her journey in “gaining an understanding of socialism and internationalism on human terms.” The Chinese socialist experiment effectively caused empathy from Asian American activists. The aura of Mao Zedong also helped perpetuate ideas of national liberation and class struggle. Both Black Panthers and AAM leaders read his political and revolutionary theories. As Mao stated, “To oppose … is to destroy … Without this destruction, socialism cannot be established.” It was these types of violent rhetoric that partly influenced the ferocious nature of radical social movement groups like the Black Panther Party, and by extension, other Asian American radical groups. The CCBA suppressed voices by blacklisting suspected communist sympathizers, making it very difficult for them to find employment for example. The divisions in the Chinatowns reveal an interesting dynamic in the lives of Asian Americans during the 60s. The Asian American Movement was not a holistic movement of all Americans or immigrants of Asian descent. Clearly the idea of a multiethnic movement did not make its way to certain ethnic areas. The cultural revolution is a strange period in Chinese history laced with intense struggle and anguish. The cultural revolution mobilized the all of society to compete for all opposing factions that they belonged to (Ong, 2016). Mao mobilized the young people of society during a background of political turmoil, which helped Mao to mobilize the students in order to enforce his political legitimacy and ideas (Ong, 2016). Mao’s charismatic authority created his personality cult and most defiantly leant a helping hand in mobilizing the red guard movement (Ong, 2016) (Weber, 1946) (Andreas, 2007). No matter which faction of the red guard they belonged to, they all mobilized against their common enemy; the better off, upper class. (Ong, 2016). Multiple ideologies within the youth led red guard movement explain why the movement gained momentum and became incredibly powerful (Walder, 2009).
In Jan Wong’s entrancing expose Red China Blues, she details her plight to take part in a system of “harmony and perfection” (12) that was Maoist China. Wong discloses her trials and tribulations over a course of three decades that sees her searching for her roots and her transformation of ideologies that span over two distinctive forms of Communist governments. This tale is so enticing in due part to the events the author encountered that radically changed her very existence and more importantly, her personal quest for self-discovery.
The autobiography, Mao’s Last Dancer written by Li Cunxin, is effective in raising awareness of the injustice the Chinese people experienced during Chairman Mao’s Cultural Revolution and later communist policies in China. When Li’s parents got married in 1946, they were not living in poverty. However, when the Japanese invaded China during WWII and forced all the civilians into communes, Mao then kept these communes and the Li family lost their wealth—they faced injustice and marginalisation. The Chinese population were marginalised by Mao’s use of communist principles and propaganda. They were forced into believing Mao’s views—that the West (Capitalist countries) were filthy and bad, while China was good. Li’s visit to America was an eye-opener.
The war in Vietnam did not affect only matured political leaders. In fact, one of the largest demographics affected by the war was the population of young adults ages 18-35. These people, who were commonly referred to as ‘college aged’, experienced a time of revolution during 1961-1975. Previous to the war, students in universities could not voice their opinions on political or social issues. The voting age at the time was actually 21, meaning many students in college could not even vote in elections. Despite their oppression, many students felt that their opinions were valid and wanted to be heard. This birthed the Free Speech Movement. Programs and organizations such as Chicago’s JOIN (Jobs or Income Now), SDS (Students for a Democratic Society), and other campus-based political organizations fueled the fight for equality of all ages. As in 1967 Martin Luther King Jr. even went against his own beliefs of not speaking out about the war he began preaching that it is truly sad to see African American people and the poor who can not make a living, being drafted (Doc C). MLK also stated that these individuals were fighting to establish peace and rights over in Vietnam, while they did not even have these for themselves (Doc C). The democratic ideals they advocated for were not limited to more voting rights as underrepresented minorities, but also included social and economic justice so they could serve as fully functional members of society. To a large extent, it is agreeable that that the 1960s serves as the era that led to activism in the US. Anderson is able to confirm and strengthen his standpoint by the fact that it was during one of the greatest milestones of the 1960s, the Vietnam War, that for the first time in the history of the US, the government was subjected to criticism and attacks against their “ways”. The murder of Vincent Chin’s influence also had a nation-wide influence on the Asian American civil rights movement. Never before had such an influence from one event had such an impact on uniting Asian Americans. Many incidents relevant to Asian American history are taught in schools, such as anti-Chinese legislation, Japanese Internment camps, or even the multiple wars against Asian countries such as the Philippines, Korea, or Vietnam (Wu). However, none of them caused a pan-Asian movement like the Vincent Chin case was able to, and the Vincent Chin case isn’t taught in schools (Wu). They are the shift from a capitalist system to a socialist system and the achievement of China's independence against Japanese imperialism (Somo, 2013a).
