It was once said, “Forgive others, not because they deserve forgiveness, but because you deserve peace.” To illustrate my point, forgiving someone is basically saying to stop feeling angry or resentful toward someone. Langston Hughe’s fictional story Thank You M’am represents a similar idea. At eleven o’clock at night, a woman named Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is walking alone on the street. From nowhere, a young boy named Roger attempts to snatch Mrs. Jones purse but fails at his attempt. Mrs. Jones starts yelling at Roger for why he had done that. At this moment, Mrs. Jones has two choices, she can call the police on Roger or let him go. Instead, Mrs. Jones takes Roger to her place and provides him food and water. She even allows him to take a shower and gives Roger ten dollars to go but new clothes. Mrs. Jones is a caring and forgiving person, therefore she doesn't turn him in. An analysis of the character, Mrs. Jones from the story Thank You, M’am demonstrates the theme not everyone is a bad person, people can be forgiven for their sins. …show more content…
When Roger tryed to pickpocket Mrs. Jone’s pocketbook, it seems as if he hadn’t thought about what would happen afterwards. In the text it said “Instead of taking off full blast as he haded hoped, the boy fell on his back in the sidewalk and his legs flew up”(1) So, as you can see Roger hadn’t fully planned out what he was going to do. You can also conclude that he was really scared and afraid of what was going to happen to him. The author describes this as “Sweat popped out on the boy’s face and began to struggle”(1) If you were to say he is a criminal he shouldn’t be that nervous when he got caught and shouldn’t be nervous if he had stolen something before. So I can conclude that Roger isn’t as fully experienced he had thought he
Forgive today, live in peace tomorrow. Forgiveness; one of the many hardships we encounter throughout life. As Marianne Williamson, an American author, stated, “Forgiveness is not always easy. At times, it feels more painful than the wound we suffered, to forgive the one that inflicted it. And yet, there is no peace without forgiveness.” Forgiveness leads to peace because it lets go of all the negative feelings and allows freedom from disturbance to take place.
Forgiveness is very important throughout life. If people don't forgive, they are going to be stuck in the past always remembering about the mistake that person did. Forgiving someone can make yourself feel better because you know you forgave that person and there's no negativity between you and that person.
Jones not going to turn in Roger to the police, she is also going to take care of him for the day. When they get to Mrs. Jones’ place, Roger is washed and fed, but is unsure of weather to run away or stay. She knew Roger was hungry because he was trying to steal her pocketbook. “I believe you’re hungry or been hungry to snatch my pocketbook.” But Roger says the reason he tried to steel was so that he could buy himself a pair of blue sued shoes.
To begin with, forgiving people who wronged you comes in handy since it helps you live a longer and healthier life. According to the informational text “Understanding Forgiveness” written by PBS, it states that people who forgive have “ [f]ewer stress-related health issues” and their
When is a risk worth taking? That is the question we ask to figure out the central idea of progress. In the three stories, “Thank You, M’am,” by Langston Hughes, “Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” by Doreen Rappaport, and “NFL is cracking down hard on illegal celebrations” by Mark Maske all show answers to, when is a risk worth taking. They all have different answers but they use the same question to show the progress.
Do you remember going or taking your child to the pediatrician office for booster shots? Do you remember getting a flu shot or chicken pox shot? Do you remember how sore your arm felt? How nervous, you felt? Scared, even? Were you one of the few who got sick after getting a shot? Did you expect to be immune to getting the flu after going for the shot, but still got the flu anyway? Were you one of the few who suffered severe complications because of the misinformation spread by the CDC , Center for Disease Control? What if you were told you didn't need some of those shots you were forced to take? Did you know it's against your rights to be forced to get a vaccine? Before we talk about vaccination, you should know how vaccines work.
Everyone has the control within them to forgive or not to forgive someone. Forgiveness comes down to taking responsibility for the choices we make and doing what we believe is right. By forgiving others, authority of our own lives can be regained by letting go of the conflicting objects from the past and moving into a more significant direction. The world today is full of conflict and people are being hurt every day. Conflict is seen today in politics, between countries, and between your average everyday people. Conflicts such as those listed above are often shaping the atmosphere we live in and shaping the person we are today. We can see that forgiveness is a place to start when trying to resolve conflicts, but not everyone will
In order to forgive, it’s crucial to recognize the reality of what happened and how you were affected. Accept how you felt and how you reacted. Forgiveness frees you from the addictive adrenaline thoughts of retribution or revenge can generate, as well as the destructive tendency to self-identify as a victim.
She lets him know that she can relate to him, but stealing isn’t the answer to his problems. She actually feels sorry for him and gives him the money he was trying to steal, and sends him on his way confused. She tells him if wants something just ask for it. By the end of the story, Roger wants Mrs. Jones to trust him. Mrs. Jones hopes that he has learned a valuable lesson and doesn’t do this again.
In short, Mrs. Jones is a great role model by seeking the good in others. Looking past the bad, giving second chances, and kindness are characteristics that help people seek the good in others. Maybe the world would be a better place if, people found the gold in others instead of the dirt. It is important to seek the good in
The article “To Forgive is Good but Sometimes I Want to Stay Mad”, by Bob Brody, discusses the need for forgiveness. Brody argues that in some situations forgiveness is not necessary. In his article he lists many scenarios which would require a tough forgiving. He talks about the perks of not forgiving and why forgiving is not always the best way to settle a dispute. Brody offers a strong argument and even recognizes that some believe that forgiveness is good for the mind, soul, and preventing medical complications; such as, heart attacks, high blood pressure, and depression. Brody’s claim that forgiveness is not always necessary is flawed because grudges do not help recovery of the transgression, grudges do not equalize the wrongdoing, and
In the story “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes Mrs. Jones kindness, and empathy for Roger changes his emotions on life. In the story Roger is a selfish, greedy boy who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse with everything in it just to buy shoes when he doesn’t realize what he got himself into. When Roger tries to take the bag Mrs. jones is very protective of her belongings, so she still has a hold of her bag and yanks it towards her to grab Roger by the shirt. Roger tries to make up that he didn’t try to grab her bag he just hit into her, but Mrs. Jones didn’t believe a single word out of his mouth. Mrs. Jones then realized that Roger was all dirty and needed to be cleaned up, so she asked if Roger had anyone home to tell him to clean himself
Germany, a western country is well-known for beer, sausage and innovative technology. China, an eastern country is well-known for delicious food, martial arts and low priced products. Everyone knows they are completely different. However, can you raise some concrete examples showing their difference? And is it true that both do not have a single similarity at all? Though, they have certain similar aspects if you look closer.
Despite women’s hard work, their efforts continue to go unrecognized. This is evident by the legal concept of unpaid and paid work. This legal concept definitely ignores the women’s work and renders it invisible, essentially disproportionately exploiting the work of women. Moreover, since unpaid work is presumed to not contribute to the capitalist economy and does not involve exploitation for surplus profit, it is undervalued. Interestingly, despite not being able to directly “profit” from unpaid work, the state has managed to find a way to still exploit the work of women. Accordingly, Waring (1998) argues that because domestic work is unpaid, it is seemingly a form of enslavement where women’s partners, families, their communities,
