A practicum offers a unique opportunity to utilize theories and competencies learned in an educational setting, and apply them to a real world experience. Additionally, a practicum allows students to experience working within an organizational structure, building interpersonal communication skills, and learning from experience. The ability to apply public health theory and knowledge, while gaining professional experience is an integral part in the course of meeting educational and career goals. In the following analysis, I will discuss how my experience applies to the aforementioned practicum benefits.
Biostatistics competencies were the main focus of the completed practicum. Specifically, the practicum allowed me to conduct a statistical data analysis of a study focusing on student performance and integrative health interventions. Using SPSS, I ran bivariate correlations for more than 150 variables. Within the results, I was tasked with distinguishing a statistical association between the variables and student performance. The multitude of correlations will lead to submission of the results for consideration of publication. In addition to bivariate correlations, I also completed more than 250 One-Way ANOVA tests, and 187 Repeated Measures tests. In addition to the SPSS analyses, I also completed a full Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) analysis and calculation, and ran correlations on the results. Part of my PSQI analysis involved finding relevant studies that had
The proposed concept is implemented as a prototype and this document gives a detailed insight about the prototype. The prototype considers wired and wireless communication and the data exchanges between them. All the simulations are executed on a windows laptop.
I am writing in reference to Bryan Canterbury and his practicum application. I have known Bryan for (___) years as his neighbor. I have found him to be a hard worker who is self-motivated, reliable and punctual. For example, Bryan works fulltime at nights and attends schools fulltime and still manages to maintain a 3.89 GPA, which requires dedication and motivation to achieve. In addition, I had set up a meeting with him and a doctor at the CDC, and he arrived more than 30 minutes before the scheduled time. This speaks volume about his abilities to be punctual. Bryan is an outstanding person with great leadership qualities.
Practicum I paper Interpretation and consideration of available assessment information for the client. This practicum started on Monday, January 11, 2016, although officially it was supposed to have started on January 09. In order of the practicum to go on hitches free we had a brief working session with the practicum coordinator. She explained some of the expectations. All our worries and expectations were discussed.
This paper focuses on describing the BSPH interdisciplinary and cross-cutting competencies that comprises the frameworks of public health, communication in public health practices, diversity and culture, and professionalism. The frameworks of public health practices focuses on the prevention of diseases and the health of the various communities. Public health officials seek to conduct research to enhance prevention. Officials also focus on investigating the public health problem that allows them to detect and control infectious diseases that may affect the health of a population. Investigating the problems may also aid in determining the magnitude, scope, and the characteristics of a public health threat. Planning, implementing, and
The American Public Health Association (APHA) is made up of 31 basic sections which represent key public health disciplines. Through these sections, members with mutual interests are able to combine efforts and develop scientific program content as well as policy papers in their areas of practice or areas where they are interested. In addition, these basic sections provide for social and professional networking, mentoring and career development. The sections are APHA’s key professional units and they help in promoting the mission and fulfilling the Association’s goals. Through these sections, a variety of opportunities for the involvement of the members, thus making a richer experience for the professionals who decide on interacting with the Association’s primary sections. In order to become an active member in this section, a person ought to be a current member of the Association and any professional who is already a member of the Association may become a section member (American Public Health
While interacting with current medical students pursuing the MD/MPH dual degree at a UTHSCSA student panel, I realized that obtaining an MPH would align greatly with my interests and career goals, allowing me to expand the scope of my medical education and enhance my critical thinking skills. I enjoy how public health combines various aspects needed to treat disease and improve health outcomes, and I know that integrating the MPH core concepts with my medical degree, will help me to become a well-rounded and better physician who approaches healthcare through both an individual and population-based perspective. An education in public health will provide me with various opportunities ranging from the creation and development of community health projects, to contributing to the modification of current health policies. I will seize the opportunity to work with professionals from all occupations including educators, clinicians, executives, and I will become an advocate and a credible voice for positive change through a better understanding of the healthcare system that is in place
This will always be my strength, my true comparative advantage. Moreover, with my experience and education, I feel that I can become a successful public health professional through the Doctorate of Public Health Program at the University of South Florida. Over the course of my professional and educational career I have been fortunate enough to acquire a wealth of experiences that have led me to pursue an advanced degree in Public Health. My interdisciplinary training in planning and public health at Florida State University as well as my professional experience with the Florida Department of Health make me an excellent candidate for The University of South Florida’s Doctorate of Public Health Program.
The ARC-PA Accreditation Standards for Physician Assistant Education, 4th Edition, states: “The program curriculum must include instruction in concepts of public health as they relate to the role of the practicing PA.” The annotation further states that “Instruction in concepts of public health includes an appreciation of the public health system and the role of health care providers in the prevention of disease and maintenance of population health. It includes participating in disease surveillance, reporting, and
My practicum was a good learning experience of practical public health work and exposure to how zoonotic disease is handled by multiple public health departments. I appreciated my experience giving me the knowledge of day-to-day public health work and what it means to be epidemiologist. My classes in epidemiology prepared me well for understanding terminology and the process of outbreak response. Particularly, my Applied Epidemiology course provided me with the critical thinking skills to evaluate published literature. In reviewing my work I used multiple public health competencies including biostatistics, epidemiology, communication and informatics, leadership, professionalism, and program planning.
This experience prepares the student for the realities of professional practice, acquiring the knowledge skills and attributes to become a safe, competent practitioner (Mcallister 2001, cited in Midgley 2006). Educational audits by the clinical lead universities monitor clinical learning environments for their appropriateness of learning provision, enabling the ward to facilitate change if necessary to ensure continuing suitability as a clinical placement (NMC 2008).
I was drawn to the idea of not only focusing on one-on-one patient care that doctors provide, but also solving problems that affect the health of entire populations. The study of disease and health within populations; for instance, preventing disease, promoting health, and reducing health problems between groups are the main reasons I want to pursue an M.P.H focusing on epidemiology. These are my strongest interests because I believe they are important in improving our world’s health.
The healthcare sector offers a variety of professional opportunities that include pediatric, geriatrics, public policy and many other areas in which I hope to make a impact towards. I have always been intrigued by medicine and continue to gain more interest in public health. In the future, I desire to combine both medicine and public health by participating in an MD and MPH program. My experiences and education provide me with constant motivation in achieving my goals.
The practicum was significant additional commitment for you, and I appreciate your time and patience in answering my questions and finding informative and interesting tasks for me to do. I know that my practicum experience will be invaluable as I complete my course in Health Information Management.
After finishing my Undergraduate, I have seen it wise to purse masters in public health, an area that I have much interest in. Having pursed a Bachelor of Science, Biological Sciences, minor in psychology, expanding my knowledge in the field of public health has been my next option. The vast knowledge that I have gained learning and working can help me while pursuing this program. Given the chance I would be able to fulfill my career goals.
In these classes, I found myself naturally drawn to the topics of research methods and statistics. These two academic areas in particular provided an environment in which I was able to develop and excercise my naturally analytical way of thinking. I then geared my undergraduate education towards learning to perform research in psychology by taking more research and science based psychology classes. Additionally, I sought out and obtained research assistantships with professors of cognition, physiological and clinical psychology. Specifically, I have been a primary research assistant for an investigation of the effect of irony on recall and recognition, an investigation of the performance of children with and without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on a computer anticipation task, and an investigation of the effect of Polychlorinated Biphenyls on ADHD-like behavior in laboratory rats. I have also assisted in literature reviews in the area of receptive language and Autism, as well as a review on sleep and genetics. In addition, I have been a participant recruiter for a research project on familial inheritance of depression and REM sleep abnormalities.
