Beeeep, beep, beeeep. Vogt pushed harder onto the horn button on his steering wheel. For fuck's sake I'm going to be late. "GET OUT OF MY WAY!" he shouted at the top of his voice to no-one in particular.
In front of his car and for some way behind, there were columns of tanks, troop trucks, armoured cars and motorcycles. German soldiers were everywhere.
Somehow he had managed to get caught up in a major troop movement through the centre of Paris.
Briefly he considered getting out of his car and ordering them all out of his way so he could get past them to his appointment, or perhaps commandeering a motorcycle and riding up through the column. He fell to his knees next to her and was relieved to see that she was still breathing, lightly and slowly, but definitely still alive.
He reached down and started to roll her over gently onto her front so he could pick her up and take her to get help.

As he moved her he saw a small trickle of blood run out of the side of her mouth and he brushed it away quickly with his gloved hand. He pulled her coat round to cover her up, to keep her warm, and then he saw it.
He recoiled as if he had been burnt. He pulled both of his hands away and jumped back to his feet as he stared at the yellow star of David sewn haphazardly onto the left side of her coat. Mein Gott, she's no Aryan, she's a Jew..., he thought and with that he turned around, a look of horror still on his face.
His mind reeled with the thoughts that had been drummed into him about the Jews and what exactly should happen to them in the doctrine of the Nazi creed. His moments hesitation over he left her exactly where she was and hurried back to his car.

As quickly as he could, he got in and drove away at speed.
The trickle of blood re-appeared in the corner of the little girl's mouth in the road far behind
