The story, “A Rose for Emily” was all about the resistance to change; that was the theme, that was the central concept. Emily’s family was a tradition, her herself was a tradition, everything she did it was because of what her mindset was like. She was living in the past while real life was in the present. Even when the officers came to talk to her about paying taxes she was living in the past, “See Colonel Sartoris, (Colonel Sartoris had been dead almost ten years.) I have no taxes in Jefferson.” Her father transferred his traditions and values to Emily and she was forced into reinforcing these expectations (ArticleMyriad). Her wanting to never let go made this easy for her because she wanted to go back to when things were her way and when her life was pretty much figured out. Since her lover and father were gone she was basically thrown into the unknown, she didn’t know what to do with herself. She never had the option to properly grow as a young woman because of her father’s behavior in not letting her go where she wanted and not dating anyone she wanted to pursue (ArticleMyRiad). There was a lack of communication which was the problem with the American and Jig, “‘We can go everywhere’ ‘No, we can't. It isn't ours anymore.’” (The book pg3) That example shows that Jig speaks but doesn’t say much, she didn’t even explain why she felt that way in details. Everything she said was in a general sense, she never brought the topic to her and her situation in a connection. Her need to make him feel good was her first priority and his first priority was himself and his wants. Since their priorities were different they both didn’t know how to express themselves, there was an ‘elephant’ in the room and they didn’t know how to get their point across fully because they both wanted different things for the
