President Donald Trump has only been in office for a few months, but a great many people find his plutocratic ways of this country unsustainable. One of those people is Joseph Epstein. Epstein writes in the article “Trump and the Plutocrats Hubris” about how he feels that it is wrong of Tump to think he will be a great president, just because he is a great businessman. In the piece, the author takes a subjective view on the matter and uses rhetorical devices such as diction and hyperboles to try and persuade the reader to think as he does.

“The American Dream: Dead Alive or on Hold?”, written by Brandon King and Paul Krugman’s “Confronting Inequality”, similar address the underlying issues of American ideals while trying to persuade the audience that the American dream, is in fact still alive. In order to convince his audience of liberal economists, King builds his argument by using own meaning the “American dream” while using a number of rhetorical devices that effectively convince the reader that the American Dream has not died. King begins his essay by offering his point of view on the American and the potential of building more prosperity in America. While King gave facts about the high rate of unemployment and the crumbling economy, he used such evidence to further help build his argument. The audience that King is reaching out to is the American public; more specifically the those who have been identified as people who should know that the American dream is still alive.

The Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift is about deprived people in Ireland in the seventeenth hundred years. Swifts purpose for his argument was to promote knowledge of poverty. Swift said that the poor Irish should kill their children and they should eat them to liquidate Irelands number of covetous citizens. In this time frame Ireland was in extreme poverty there was a wide gap between poor and rich. All throughout the essay swift tries to persuade his audience by trying to propose a sever and immoral solutions, so he can persuade others to come up with a realistic solution. In Peter Singer’s essay “The Singer Solution to World Poverty”, published on September 5th, 1999 in The New York Times Magazine, Singer claims that the solution to world poverty is for Americans to donate excess income to aid organizations. His article consists of a gathering of exaggerated situations which he uses to engage readers, while also adequately supporting an argument of moral duty by comparing the hypothetical scenarios to Americans who do not donate. Singer exhibits an appeal to pathos to a substantial amount throughout his article. The provided situations set an outline for the reader to feel certain, appealing emotions.

In Lyndon B. Johnson’s speech The Great Society he is effective in showing that the society must work to build and achieve a great society. He is effective in showing this by giving examples of how to improve America by using rhetorical devices in his speech to create envisionments of the future in the society. By doing this he is effective in his speech to motivate people to participate and help develop this great society.

Publisher, Richard V. Reeves, in his online article, "The Dangerous Separation of the American Upper Middle Class," shares how income, education, and political power have caused a split in the upper middle class. Reeves's purpose is to convey the idea that the upper middle class has shifted from being a sociological curiosity to an economic and political problem. Reeves outlines how the upper middle class that was once considered an accessible hope or American dream, is now a blockade and an obstacle for others. He adopts a rational and analytical tone to appeal to the reader's sense of reason. Reeves cites convincing facts and statistics as well as successfully uses emotional appeals. However, toward the end of the article his attempts to appeal to reader's emotions, weakens the credibility and ultimately his argument.

Although, the welfare reform was documented for making several positive changes such as reducing poverty rates, lowering the out of-wedlock childbearing, and formulated a better family structure, it is undeniable that poverty remained high among single mothers and their children. The reality of the matter was that most welfare recipients experienced serious barriers to maintain a stable employment due to their lack of skills, not having anyone available to take care of their young children when they leave for work as well as not gaining long-time employment with decent pay to help foster the family. As a result, most poor women and children were faced with the instability of economic and social future as welfare eligibility exhausted their efforts of supporting their families.
