Our Sex Crazed Congress
In the article, "Our Sex Crazed Congress" (Aug 1, 2015), New York Times writer Nicholas Kristof demonstrates that Conservative Republicans would be stupid to destroy the organization called Planned Parenthood. The author starts out by saying that dissolving the program is a bad idea, then backs it up with evidence and examples of girls who can benefit from Planned Parenthood. Kristof's purpose is to prove that, even if you are against abortions, you shouldn't condemn a whole organization that prevents more abortions than it causes in order to inform people that show that this isn't the way to deal with the problem. Nicholas Kristof writes to an audience of people looking into Planned Parenthood and those thinking about shutting it down, and the relationship he establishes with his audience is that he thinks they're stupid for shutting down Planned Parenthood and he isn't very open to other views on the matter.

Even if you disagree with abortion, it would be more beneficial to women to keep Planned Parenthood going. If someone had an infection you would get rid of it, not shoot the person. I, personally, am against abortion and I don't like that Planned Parenthood is performing them, but I can look past that and see that they are doing ten times more good than whatever the media is saying about them. Like Kristof said, "It's baffling that House Republicans are trying to eliminate a 45-year-old bipartisan initiative that is one of the country's anti-poverty successes - and also perhaps America's most successful anti-abortion initiatives." They provide family planning, often test for H.I.V., cure sexually transmitted infections, and screen for cervical and breast cancer. These are all good things that help women who, in many circumstances, couldn't normally
In January 2016, Congress passed a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, a family planning group that runs more than 800 reproductive health clinics across the United States. They wanted to cut Planned Parenthood because they perform abortions. Most people don’t know they only do them for certain situations. If you were raped and the pregnancy is still early they will perform it. If the pregnancy was included in incest they might terminate it due to problems that would be cause in the baby due to alike DNA. In other cases if the pregnancy was harming the mother they might also do it then. That's not all what planned parenthood does though. They also have operations that include prevention pregnancy by distributing birth control and free condoms. They also educate the public about contraception, they reduce the spread of STD’s through education, testing, and treatment. They also screen for cervical and other cancers. Planned Parenthood offers so much but cutting tax funds they wouldn’t be able to offer a lot of those things. More than 5 million men and women world 5 million men and women worldwide use their services
Many of these healthcare services would be difficult to get elsewhere since many are covered by Medicaid reimbursements. When taking numbers into consideration an estimate of “390,000 [women] served by Planned Parenthood would lose access to care in the first year after defunding” (The Times Editorial Board 2017). This situation will only make the health system worse by leaving certain categories of people at stake for the pleasure of others, Republicans as the authors of the article would describe this issue as petty and punitive. Also, in regards to the violation of women’s rights, the government is stepping in by already making a decision for women due to the fact that many will be unable to receive contraception, a service provided by the organization, which will result in an increase in pregnancies.
Planned Parenthood is an unmatched resource to an uncountable number of patients, and it should never be taken away. If everyone that does not support Planned Parenthood, based on the fact they provide abortions, were to look past that for a second. What they would see is a remarkable organization that is there to help everyone in need. Planned Parenthood is not just any old clinic, their patients know that going there will result in the best possible care available. Also women know that even if it could result in Planned Parenthood being defunded, that their rights will be fought for by Planned Parenthood. Knowing that patients need to have someone available to talk to is a quality that makes Planned Parenthood stand out. As well as the testing
There have been many attempts on their part to pass anti-abortion legislation through and the most recent effort to defund Planned Parenthood is a response to false allegations surrounding fetal tissue donation. While Planned Parenthood does offer abortion services, the facility provides a wide array of other health services to demographics that are limited in their choice of health care provider. The issue is not that Planned Parenthood should not receive funding from the government; the issue is that republicans want to push their anti-abortion agenda. America has continually emphasized their believe in the separation of church and state. Those that support pulling funding have been using inaccurate information regarding the fetal donations to start a fire behind prolife
In Texas (Texas being the first state in America to cancel Medicaid funding), Governor Abbot recently informed Planned Parenthood that the state is cutting off the organization from the state’s Medicaid program stated by Andy Sullivan in the article “Texas Tries To Stitch a Safety Net without Planned Parenthood”, as recently released undercover videos show evidence of violations. Another huge thing they have been under fire for is whether or not they are making a profit off of abortions, if they are making a profit off of abortions the government strongly
Another consequence that will have to be dealt with in the event that a bill stripping Planned Parenthood of funding is passed, is the loss of a safe, non-judgmental place for men and women to receive sex-education, birth control, general health care, treatment for STDs, pap smears and breast exams, and refuge and support for those in abusive relationships. All of these services make up 97% percent of what Planned Parenthood does, leaving only three percent of what they do as being abortions. With the help of Planned Parenthood, the rate of teen pregnancy is declining and is a 20-year low, one million people outside the US receive health care they wouldn’t otherwise have access to, the rate of the diagnosis of and death from cervical cancer has
Someone once said,“Being pro choice doesn’t mean you would have an abortion. It just means you think the choice is yours, not the government's. In the New York Times editorial written on June 27, 2016, entitled, “ A Major Victory for Abortion Rights,” the writers are targeting young women can understand that the choice of abortion should be in the women's hands. This article is about keeping abortion legal in America, but primarily Texas. The writer's emotional appeals, word choices, and logic to successfully encourage the readers.
Planned Parenthood is an organization that is critical for both men and women’s health care. Right now there are people trying to defund Planned Parenthood, and that would leave countless men and women without an excellent source of health care. Planned Parenthood provides a level of care that surpasses many other health care centers, and would be a devastating loss if defunded. Another thing that Planned Parenthood does is advocate for women rights, by doing so they provide abortions, but that should not be what defines the services of Planned Parenthood. They provide so much more than that, Planned Parenthood offers a wide range of tests and treatments, as well having someone there for anyone to talk to. Planned Parenthood should not be
In the article, “Closing Of Planned Parenthood clinics a victory for Iowa women”, they start out telling which facilities will be closing and which ones will be staying open at this point in time. They explain the reason for closing some facilities; those reasons are because planned parenthood offers abortions. Maggie states some pros and cons about the facilities and the minimal research that people did around the community. Along with that is stated the resources that planned parenthood offers to people who need it. The article states the motto of planned parenthood and then
Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides healthcare and education to both men and women, having over 650 health centers that provide healthcare to countless communities around the world. Shockingly, 78% of those who use Planned Parenthoods services live at or below 150% of the federal poverty line, showing how important this organization is to low-income families (Topulos, Greene, Drazen). Their mission statement is “A Reason for Being”, which is shown through their efforts to provide health care, advocate public policies, create educational programs, and endorse research. There are those who do not believe Planned Parenthood should be funded by the government, though, due to the fact that they provide abortions to women in need. Studies show that the effects of not having Planned Parenthood available are disastrous, causing low-income families to lack a healthcare provider and the number of those who are infected with STD’s and STI’s to rise. The biggest concern communities have about the government defunding Planned Parenthood is the effects that it would have on low-income families who would no longer have access to something that many people take for granted: health care. Although many believe that Planned Parenthood mostly provides abortions, in reality, only 3% of the people that seek help from them receive an abortion, while 97% receive affordable and, in many cases,
In a recent article, “Nailed it: Paul Ryan’s perfect answer to why Planned Parenthood should be defunded”, Claire Chretien explains House Speaker Representative Paul Ryan’s view on the defunding of Planned Parenthood. He starts off by stating that he wants to ensure women get the care they need. He says, “we believe that this can better be done by putting that money in federal community health centers” (Chretien). Putting the money into local community centers, congress can ensure that women get all of the health services they need. “Planned Parenthood receives approximately $500 million in public funding, with federal funding consisting of Medicaid reimbursements and grants from the Title X Family Planning Program” (“Planned Parenthood Controversy”). By redirecting the funds into local health centers, people are supporting their community, the cost of care becomes more affordable with the extra funds, and women have access to more than just abortion health
Since many believe that Planned Parenthood only performs abortions, a frenzy against it has been created. “We don’t want to commit taxpayer funding for abortions, and Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider” (Strickland quoting Paul Ryan, 2017). Republicans rather see federal funding go towards federal community centers. However, to clarify this misconception we need to look at what federal funding is going towards. Planned Parenthood receives its funding from Medicaid reimbursements (Berg, 2017). They do not keep any hidden money, or have money put aside to preform free abortions. As the federal money that comes in goes straight towards helping patients.
Five years ago, we learned in Texas what can happen when efforts to defund Planned Parenthood are carried out. The network of health-care providers falls apart and women lose access to essential preventive services. Planned Parenthood is not something that, at first, was affecting Texas government. When Texas decided to focus on the fact that they preform abortions, basically, just ignoring the fact the government started by providing reproductive health care and still do. That’s when Planned Parenthood was forced to fight back, which started to affect Texas government because of their involvement. Years ago, Texas voluntarily gave up $30 million a year in federal funding for women’s health programs, just so it could exclude Planned Parenthood from the roster of approved
Business Insider’s Rebecca Harrington shares in “The Fight to Defund Planned Parenthood Has Very Little to Do with Abortions,” that “Planned Parenthood health centers serve 2.5 million people each year.” Sharmila Devi concurs in Anti-abortion groups target funding of Planned Parenthood.” :“Services for millions of women [can’t end] overnight [and] get a replacement in every community where they're needed.” In essence, those who currently rely on Planned Parenthood clinics would lose resources and services they previously had access to and may have relied heavily
Planned Parenthood has been around for about 100 years and is the primary womens’ provider in America. In 1916, when it first opened its doors, it had a clear and simple goal: “Women should have the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfil their dreams.” Throughout the years they have fought to keep women's fundamental right’s safe and legal. Abortion is one of the things that Planned Parenthood supports women with. They believe that the only person deciding what to do with the pregnancy is the individual themselves. As a matter of fact, 3 out of 10 women partake in an abortion before they turn 45. (Abortion, Planned Parenthood). Not only do they perform abortions when necessary, they go out and inform young adults about safe sex and birth control. They are trying to lower the numbers of unwanted pregnancies, but do not judge or questions mothers when they do come in for an abortion. They were very proud when the Roe v. Wade law passed because women could finally practice abortion safely and legally. They believe that a legal abortion is the safest way to end an unwanted pregnancy. Before abortion was legal, illegal abortions sent many women to the hospital, and many others to the grave. They are working very hard to keep abortion legal in the United States because they value the life of the women and her freedom of making the decision of her own
