In fiction books, all the content is made up. Non-fiction books are written about facts or about events that are real. The Other Wes Moore, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and Eyes Wide Open bring up important topics, such as life choices, ethics, and climate change. They are all true and introduce crucial issues that are very relevant to present day. The Other Wes Moore uniquely brings up the theme of how two people who have similar backgrounds could end up having completely different lives because of their decisions. In the book, Travis Smiley wrote, “the choices we make about the lives we live determine the kinds of legacies we leave” (Moore 185) This quote summarizes the main theme of the book. The article is headlined, “The story of the surgery that made Ben Carson famous — and its complicated aftermath.” Ben Carson grew up poor in Detroit and was very misbehaved as a child (Terris 1). He then decided to turn his life around and to become a neurosurgeon (Terris 3). The author of the article wrote, “More than any other moment in a dazzling career, the separation of the Binder twins launched the stardom of Ben Carson. The then-35-year-old doctor walked out of the operating room that day and stepped into a spotlight that has never dimmed, from the post-surgery news conference covered worldwide, through his subsequent achievements in his medical career, to publishing deals and a lucrative career as a motivational speaker — all paving the way to his current moment as a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination” (Terris 10). This quote explains how Ben Carson rose to fame because he successfully separated the Binder twins. This is a true success story of someone with a tough childhood. It is headlined, “Chinese Scientists Edit Genes of Human Embryos, Raising Concerns.” According to the article, somewhere in the world, there were scientists attempting to edit genes in a way that would permanently change the DNA of that cell (Kolkata 1). Chinese scientists bragged that they had tried it. Even though their experiment failed, it raised any ethics questions since it has been proven unsafe (3). Scientists are pledging to stop, but as stated in the article, “some researchers worry that this paper is just an initial sally and that attempts will continue” (6).
