The authors concluded that while increasing gastroenterology capacity is important (i.e., capital and funding availability, plus searching the local labor market for gastroenterology physicians, nurses, and physician assistants), it may not be as beneficial as redirecting the focus on healthcare system process changes. Access limitations may be due to suboptimal management of current capacity rather than inadequate levels of capacity (Powell et al., 2009). As the largest healthcare system in the world, the VHA cannot rely solely on hiring and training more gastroenterology staff when process management is also in urgent need of simultaneous, coordinated improvement. As a response to this colossal demand to expand gastroenterology trained and credentialed providers to perform colonoscopy, a small number of VHA facilities and gastroenterology departments sought new and innovative ways to build provider and space capacity to mitigate this challenging, unmet need. Dr. Jason Dominitz, National Program Director for Gastroenterology Patient Care Services, reported there are at least a half-dozen or more credentialed nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) performing colonoscopy at various VHA facilities. The non-physician endoscopists have collectively provided safe, quality-driven procedural care and high patient satisfaction survey
When there are Nurse Practitioners that are filling in for doctors, this can improve quality. The way that this takes place is to have these individuals work with select amounts of patients. This creates smaller teams and more personalized attention in providing these services. This is when mistakes will decrease with health care professionals doing more for everyone. Once this happens, is when the underlying quality of care will rise. (“Scope of Practice,” 2010)

As a novice nurse I will have limited clinical experience, and since one component of evidence-based practice involves clinician expertise, I will have some difficulty applying this practice to my nursing care. However, through my education, I will be introduced to research, patient data, clinical experiences, and patient preferences and values, which will allow me to gain valuable knowledge, proficiency, and experience that will allow me to implement evidenced based practice into my nursing profession.

As a part of an inter-professional healthcare team, the educational journal of a registered nurse must include inter-professional collaboration. According to the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (2010), the practice and advancement of the nursing profession must keep pace with the changing
I believe that the profession of nursing requires that we continually seek learning opportunities and strive to improve our skills and knowledge. As an instructor my role is not only to teach evidence based material but to make it applicable to subsequent classes and future professional practice.
According to Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper & Bucher (2014), “Evidence-based practice is a problem-solving approach to clinical decision making. It involves the use of the best available evidence in combination with clinical expertise and patient preferences and values to achieve desired patient outcomes.” Using evidence based practice in nursing is extremely important, because evidence-based practice is the result of others trying a practice one way but needing to change some of the guidelines to make the practice safer and over all better for patients.
My course of study at the University of Mary is the Master of Science in Nursing, Nurse Educator track. My level of experience in education is limited to the time I have spent educating patients within the various positions I have held since becoming a nurse. Pre- and post-op instructions, educating patients during their labor and delivery experience, as well as educating patients on medications, treatments and options in their care include some of the ways I've interacted with patients in providing education. I do not have any experience in the development or implementation of research of evidence-based projects (EBP) studies.
As a provider of care, professional nurses depend on research, theories, and evidence based practice to guide the care they provide to patients. Nurses deliver care to their patients based on information they have learned through many years of school and training. Training for nurses and other providers of care is founded on theories, research, and evidence based practice in the healthcare field. Theories, research, and evidence based practice are all important for providing care to patients and each can be used in a different manner depending on the situation. Clinicians often use research based evidence to design and implement care that is high-quality and cost effective for patients. Evidence based practice can be used to provide care to patients in a steadily changing clinical environment. (PDF page 8-9). Nursing theories are frequently used as frameworks for establishing nursing care interventions and assessing
The most important content covered in class was learning how to read a research as well as identifying how to determine its quality. Erwin explained the various types of research and how to sift through the material to pick out the key information. Erwin also explained how to use the Johns Hopkins Research and Non-Research Evidence Appraisal and Strength of Evidence form (The Johns Hopkins University, n.d.) in order to determine whether or not the evidence was well performed and truly beneficial. This knowledge provided the students the ability to read through evidence and understand how to integrate good quality evidence into our practice. Nurses need to know the best practice and with these tools will be able to stay informed in their practice.
In survey method research, participants answer questions administered through interviews or questionnaires. After participants answer the questions, researchers describe the responses given. In order for the survey to be both reliable and valid it is important that the questions are constructed properly. Questions should be written so they are clear and easy to comprehend.
