In one case Salva is extremely hungry and gets help from people when they find honey for him, “He pointed up at the branches of the tree. “A beehive. A fine large one.” (25) If he did not have a person find that beehive, Salva probably would have perished of hunger because Salva was incredibly hungry: “Nothing was real except his hunger, once a hollow in his stomach but now a deep buzzing pain in every part of him” (23) His hunger was intense and painful and he may have perished from hunger. This is one situation where a person helped Salva to survive. This other situation shows how an old woman gave him old peanuts, enabled him to live longer and not die of hunger, “A few moments later she came out and gave him two handfuls of raw peanuts” (16) If she didn’t give him those two handfuls of peanuts, Salva would have probably died because he was very hungry as seen in, “Salva had never been so hungry” (23) His hunger was incredible and he may have starved to death and proves how important people are that help

To begin with, Salva needs determination. Salva has to be determined in order to make it through the obstacles of the desert, on his journey to Ethiopia. Salva had stubbed his toe so hard that his toe nail came off. The story “A Long Walk To Water” by Linda Sue Park, took place in the years 1985 to 2009. A theme that comes up in the story is survival. In the story, Salva is one of the characters that faces the theme. Many things helped him survive, but the most important factor in his survival is his uncle. Linda Sue Park shows that Salva survived because of the help his uncle gave him along the way, he survived with the help the lady he called auntie offered him when she gave him shelter in the barn and helped him join a group to stay away from war. His survival in the story was also shown when the boy brought him down in the river almost drowning him but ended up saving his life.

But for a girl named Nya she had to persevere walking through the hot weather stepping on thorns for 16 hours everyday just to provide dirty water for their family. Nya and Salva have a hard and sad life, but they couldn’t have survived through it without unity, love, and perseverance.
Salva keeps going even though he was devastated when he lost his friend Marial. Salva explained the loss of his friend as: “A cold fist seemed to grip Salva’s heart”(pg 38). He also kept going even though his uncle was shot dead. His beloved uncle who protected him, guided him, and loved him, was gone. “Now that Salva was without Uncle’s care and protection, the group’s attitude toward him changed”(pg 65). Salva faces traumatic events while crossing the river, he watches people get shot and killed. Later, Salva learned that thousands had died trying to cross the river, either drowned or shot or attacked by crocodiles (pg 79). After crossing the river only a few boys were alive, so Salva led the young boys to shelter. The boys kept walking, and walking till they found a safe
One important factor in A Long Walk to Water that helps Salva survive is his motivation from the loss of his family/friends. After Salva loses Uncle and Mariel, Salva continues as a stronger and more self-dependent man. As it states in A Long Walk to Water, “Mariel and Uncle were no longer by his side, and they never would be again, but Salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive, to finish the trip and reach the Itang refugee camp safely. I was almost as if they had left their strenge with him, to help him on the journey….But there was no doubt: Beneath his terrible sadness, he felt stronger” (Park, 65). This proves that the death of Uncle and Mariel strengthen Salva and motivated him to keep going. If Uncle and Mariel
