Do people find their purpose through struggle? People find their purpose through the struggles they face in life. Salva from a Long Walk to Water was caught in the middle of the Sudanese was and experienced many hardships as a Refugee, later when he grew up, he helped others in Africa lessen their struggles. In the same way, Samuel, a disabled child who relied on his brothers to get him to school, wants to become someone that can help others like him to go to school and learn. Both people faced struggles and wanted others to not face the same struggles that they had. In a Long Walk to Water, Salva experiences the power of water. After struggling many years as a refugee, he gets a new chance at a life in America, but he still holds love for his country. After the war ends, Sudan returns to its daily struggles as well as war restorations. One of the daily struggles is finding clean water. Girl must walk to some water source miles away just to get water which is not clean. This brings many people illness from the bacteria in the unfiltered water. Salva noticed these struggles and helped his country by building multiple clean water pumps for villages. Slava, the main character, was born and for 11 years raised in Sudan in 1985 during the civil war. Slava was a member of a successful family, Slava’s father was the village judge and owned many cattle. Slava was able to go to school, that was not common in Sudan. Slava was at school , his village was under attack and he needed to leave to get safety behind a bush so he would not be hurt , Slava ran to a bush get safety. In the novel “A long walk to water” by Linda Sue Park, Salva, a young man that lived in South Sudan throughout his childhood to his young-adult years, had faced many difficult challenges the young age of eleven. Salva had to flee from home because of Sudan’s civil war. He soon experienced a horrifying and dreadful life, his family gone, no resources in his group, he watched people die, walked for months, and lead twelve hundred boys to a refugee camp in Kenya. Salva survived this terrible life with the help of three factors, perseverance, luck, and relationships with others. Without any of these factors, Salva might not have been able to survive or possibly become the leader he is today.

The story “A Long Walk To Water” by Linda Sue Park, took place in the years 1985 to 2009. A theme that comes up in the story is survival. In the story, Salva is one of the characters that faces the theme. Many things helped him survive, but the most important factor in his survival is his uncle. Linda Sue Park shows that Salva survived because of the help his uncle gave him along the way, he survived with the help the lady he called auntie offered him when she gave him shelter in the barn and helped him join a group to stay away from war. His survival in the story was also shown when the boy brought him down in the river almost drowning him but ended up saving his life.

After visiting a remote part of Sudan, where his father was hospitalized for drinking too much contaminated water, Salva wants to help not only his father, but the many others that are suffering from this issue to get clean water. Another example would be Jackson Saikong. Jackson’s struggle was to get a proper education. In order get the proper education so he could accomplish his dream of being a pilot, he needed to go to school. Each week, he embarked on a nine mile long journey with his younger sister to get to school. Like Salva, his life was filled with much danger, and one moment could determine the difference from life and death. Through the danger that awaited Jackson on each trip to school, he soon realized that his family lived so far away from the school he attended and in a remote area, was because they didn’t prosper very well financially. For example if he still hanged on those memories of grief he would have stop walking, because the path he walked was cluttered with thorns and needles. This shows that even if you are different from each other, help each other out through rough times and accept them for who they really are. In the story Nya was from the Nuer tribe and Salva was from the Dinka tribe. The Dinka and Nuer tribes have been fighting violently for a long time and have been fighting over water for their cattle since the climate is very dry and the geography doesn't have a lot of water available to them. At the end of the story Salva came to help the Nuer tribe on getting water once he had all his own needs in America. On page 114, in the story A Long Walk to Water, it states “The Dinka and Nuer tribes were enemies-had been for hundreds of years. “Why would a Dinka bring water to us” she wondered aloud. “I heard Uncle and Father talking about him,” Dep said. “He has drilled so many wells for his own people. This year he decided to drill for the Nuer as well.” This displays that Salva knew the Nuer needed some help but he decided to help them and accept them for who they are and not judge.
