Alex Walton Professor Carla Jackson English 102 October 16, 2014 The Setting of “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” By using the element of setting in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, Flannery O’Connor was able to foreshadow the impending doom of the family in the story. There are many key hints that the author gives the reader throughout the story that lets the reader know that the death of the family is coming soon. These hints are not made obvious to the reader however with some critical thinking they make perfect sense. The outcome of the story cannot necessarily be predicted at the beginning of the story but when scrutinizing the minute details of setting throughout the story one can see that O’Connor’s description of setting really allowed the prediction of the tragic ending. …show more content…

The city in which the family lives is nameless. The story takes us to many places when the family is traveling along the road such as the barbeque restaurant “Red Sammy’s”. The second part of this story is taken place in the middle of nowhere in a ditch after the family is in a car accident. This ditch is in a forest that was described as “tall and dark and deep” (O’Connor, 428). As far as the time period goes, it can be predicted that the story took place around the 1940’s. The specific year or era is not specified in the story. However, the grandmother mentioned Gone With The Wind in line 24 which suggests that the story could have taken place in the 1940’s or potentially later because that film came out in 1939 (“Gone With The Wind”, 1).
