“It’s Really Hard to Be a Good Guy with a Gun” by Adam Weinstein focuses on the issues that surround having a concealed weapons license. Weinstein mentions that while he still has a concealed weapons permit he no longer carries around a weapon because he is unsure if he could appropriately identify the right time to use it. Weinstein also addresses how gun violence is increasing and how “good guys with guns” are unable to use their weapons to reduce this statistic by properly protecting themselves and others.

Weinstein begins by addressing the issues that have arisen with a lenient concealed weapons permit policy and how it’s difficult to be seen as a “good guy” when you’re carrying around an object that has the ability to end a person’s life. He mentions how mass shootings are on the rise and aren’t being stopped by the armed “good guys” and this reflects the lack of ability to deescalate a life threating situation most people have. Weinstein isn’t outright saying pro-gun users are necessarily wrong for being so, but is simply asking himself and his audience, “Can you react rationally and what do you do after you’ve fired your gun?”
This discourse is needed because Weinstein is speaking from a personal standpoint that gun owners can relate to. He highlights the inner turmoil many gun owners must face when thinking about owning a gun and whether or not they can properly use it. He also goes into detail when he explains how people who own guns have caused more
In “Confessions of a Liberal Gun Owner” by Justin Cronin, he uses logos, ethos, and pathos to discuss the pros and cons on the much debated topic of gun laws and ownership. His intent is to inform the readers of his view on the topic and why he appreciates and accepts gun usage.
Taya Kyle, the author of the article “American Sniper Widow: Gun Control Won’t Protect Us”, believes that there are two sides of the argument on gun control. People can use statistics, facts, and real life examples to argue that there should be stricter control of guns in the US, but they cannot eliminate the emotional side of the story. While in the last two decades, violent crime rates have actually been reduced in the US, fears have gone up. Anyone can be a victim of a violent crime because if another person decides to do harm, they will do it under any circumstances.
The author of “Confessions of a Liberal Gun Owner” is both anti-gun and pro-gun. He argues that it is too easy for someone to obtain a gun and that there should be tighter regulations on gun ownership. But at the same time, he also believes that owning guns can be useful especially when they are needed to protect yourself or your family.
“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.” -NRA chief. This statement has been largely disputed relating to the carrying of concealed weapons in public and whether it should be allowed or not. People try to use the history of guns in America and the interpretation of the second amendment to prove or disprove a point. One can also compare the good and the bad of each side and decide for themselves what they think the best option is. The argument is whether or not concealed carry affects America and it’s citizens in a more positive or negative way. It is only when it’s decided what the effects are can you go forward figuring out the solutions.
Gun violence has been a massive issue through the modern age of humanity and has created a sense of division regarding the solution to this epidemic. In Adam Gopnik’s essay “Shootings”, Gopnik addresses the issue of gun violence and demands a change in American government policy to prevent the tragic killings of innocent lives. Gopnik harnesses the tool of emotion and passion to drive his essay. In Charles Cooke’s essay “Gun Control Dishonesty”, Cooke takes the polar opposite of Gopnik’s approach by utilizing factual evidence to prove the futility of gun control.
"Battleground America," written by Jill Lepore, provides a strong history of guns and the way they have changed in the eyes of the American through the years. She proves her point with strong evidence throughout her article, sprinkling it with opinion and argument that is strongly supported. She presents her argument to convince her audience that the open availability of guns allows citizens to undeservingly purchase them by displaying the credibility in her sources, using negative connotations in her speech, and the strength and objectivity only a strong logos appeal can provide.
Guns are one of the most controversial and debated-upon topics in America today. In the Constitution, Americans are given “the right to bear arms,” and many Americans are proud of and believe strongly in that right. Though, that right has been constantly misused. Homicides by gun are at a higher rate in the United States than any other country in the world, mass shootings are at an all time high (many of which have occurred in the past two years alone), and terrorism has been at an all-time high. So, naturally, it is a topic that needs to be discussed. In the articles Change Your Gun Laws, America (1), author Fareed Zakaria provides the readers with some harrowing statistics on guns and insight over how the U.S. laws on guns need to be managed.
The American society has for long struggle with the debate and issue of private gun ownership. There are the advocates proposing lenient laws to allow more gun possession while the people against it calling for stringent laws to control the situation. For many centuries, since the enactment of the Second Amendment and even during the slavery period, gun ownership remains an issue to debate. The negative effects have been the harassment of the minority and the vulnerable as well as increased crimes. On other hand, it has helped promote the security of the people and ensure there is no violation of people’s rights to own guns as required by the Second Amendment. As such, gun control and ownership remains a controversial and hot topic of discussion
People who appreciate activities like shooting competitions and hunting, use firearms responsibly. This use contrasts with other uses, which often result in consequences that can be both intended and unintended. With past and present mass shootings, and acts of bloodshed perpetrated with the usage of weapons; has triggered a focus on gun control that once again has been brought into the spotlight. The purpose of the ongoing gun argument addresses the crimes that are committed with guns. This issue of gun control separated people into two groups: those who believe that carrying guns might prevent some crimes and fatalities, and those who don’t. There are individuals who believe absolutely the reverse: that more crime and deaths
Only this month, 59 were killed and over 500 people were injured during a country music concert in Vegas in what is now known as the deadliest mass shooting in American history. Last year, 49 were killed and 58 were injured in a gay nightclub in Florida. In 2012, a mass shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary School took 27 lives, 20 of them being first graders. The list of these unthinkable and stomach-churning acts is quickly turning endless, forcing us to rethink why we truly have the right to bear arms. Many defend the second amendment by claiming we need this right for self defense, which is the most wretched part. When we look at what we have lost compared to what we have earned in this fight to keep the right to bear arms, this privilege does not seem worth the sacrifice of so many lives. In today’s world, we do not defense through guns but from them. Our policymakers keep trying to reach a compromise by putting in place certain regulations. “Some states require would-be gun owners to fulfill a firearms safety course in order to obtain their license.” “Such training courses, however, even when not required, are very advisable for the would-be gun owner, as they ensure that he or she has all the necessary information on liability issues, on safety, and even on care and maintenance of the gun” ( How to Get a Gun License 1). This lack of attention illustrates that despite the multiple tragedies that have taken place in our nation, some states do not even require a simple safety course that ensures the safety of our people. Furthermore, it is required that one must pass a background check. The questions asked on the test are the following:
When we hear the term gun control, we think of opposing sides of the topic arguing whether citizens should continue to have the right to bear arms or not, including the possible consequences of continuing the use of the second amendment. As we know, gun violence is one a the major political issues that has caused public corruption and still continue to this day. During Barack Obama’s eight year term of presidency, he announced his thoughts and plan for change on how to limit gun control violence. He discusses how gun control can affect the lives of citizens physical and mental health, along with overall lifestyle. Barack shares past tragedies of gun violence and how gun control has played a huge role into our society. Throughout this speech Barack Obama gives on gun control, he persuades the public by using ethos, pathos, and logos to highlight the important concepts for change of this amendment.
The momentous of gun control is prodigious. There have been many situations where the use of a gun has had a major impact on one’s life. When someone is languished or going through a great cause of tribulation one’s first instinct is to regress to safety. On an early Wednesday morning, a fifty-three year old woman was encountered by a strange man, while she was in the shower, with a knife. Immediately the man and the woman engaged in a physical
Charles W. Collier’s article, “Gun Control in America: An Autopsy Report”, dives into the controversial topic of gun ownership and gun control in the United States. He uses recent shootings, including the George Zimmerman case and the Connecticut elementary
In America guns have been a part of the country’s society since it’s birth. Throughout history the citizens of the US have used firearms to protect the nation, protect their families, hunt for food and engage in sporting activities. The issue of Guns and gun control is complex. Weighing the rights and liberties of the individual against the welfare and safety of the public has always been a precarious balancing act. In the United States, gun control is one of these tumultuous issues that has both sides firmly entrenched in their positions. Those parties in favor of gun ownership and the freedom to use and keep arms, rely on the fact that the provision for such rights is enshrined in their constitution. In this climate of
