Ancient Greeks followed myths and teachings of gods and heroes called Greek Mythology. Gods/desses exist in greek mythology to symbolize events such as weather changes to religious rituals, these stories help set up a social system while also occupying kids minds with thoughts such as where people go when they die. Demi-gods are the results of a god and a human making love, they have the appearance of a human, but have better traits than most and are also immortal. Hercules is known for his immense strength from him being a son of Zeus but also a mortal mother. Hercules was very kind and caring, and was the only son of a mortal woman who became a god before dying. We will be discussing the Disney Hercules and the Dwayne Hercules. The Disney movie introduces a child friendly hercules who ends up learning a valuable lesson in the end and becomes a hero. The Dwayne Johnson movie introduces a more realistic hercules who travels the world with his band of mercenaries accomplishing difficult tasks for money and other rewards. The Disney version makes Hercules more friendly and less realistic which is ineffective to the myth itself, but the Dwayne version makes Hercules very realistic which helps make the story effective. The changes the Disney and Dwayne make to Hercule's birth and early life and his own family are both effective in their own ways. Zeus falls in love Alcmene and makes her pregnant, they name the baby Hercules to honor Zeus’s wife, Hera. Hera was still mad though so she sends snakes to kill Hercules, but he was so strong that he killed them with his bare hands. Hercules then grows up, marries Megara and has kids, but Hera sends Hercules into madness and makes him murder his wife and kids, he then has to repent for his sins with the 12 labors. In the Disney version, Hercules is made to be an actual god and the child of Zeus and Hera, Hades with his evil plans sends his minions to kidnap Hercules and make him mortal but Hercules doesn’t drink the last drop of formula, letting him keep his strength. Hercule the grows up with mortal parents but realizes eventually that he has super strength and that he is not a normal boy. These changes are effective for the audience as Hercules was originally a hero
More clearly than the Bible, Greek/Roman mythology helps outline the life cycle that almost always applies to the traditional archetypal hero. With basic knowledge of the Bible we can determine right from wrong and its influence in real life when reading mythology. As the reader we experience this when seeing the actions the hero takes, as explained by Frye when he states, "... the central myth of the hero whose mysterious birth, triumph and marriage, death and betrayal and eventual rebirth..." (Frye, 67), explaining the archetypical story outline of the tragic hero. As an example of the archetype, the story of Hercules starts with the mysterious birth of a being that is half god and half man, with his father famously being Zeus. Following Hercules' diverse birth we also know he triumphed over the leader of the underworld named Hades, while also
There has been many discussions on the differences between Hercules and Heraclês. Disney likes to change stories to make them more child friendly. This creates differences between the original stories and the Disney take on the tales. In the case of the movie of Hercules and the story of Heraclês the main differences, that I will be focusing on is family value, true love, and comic relief.
Disney’s Hercules depicts the classic mythical tale of the infamous demi god. Evil Hades, Hercules grows up on Earth but has godly strength from which he doesn't know originates. When he discovers his immortal heritage, Zeus calls him to return to Mount Olympus to become the champion he is destined to be. Eventually, Hercules evolves to be a famous hero with the help of Pegasus and Phil the satyr. Through his journey he takes on mythical monsters, Titans, and Hades. In the end it is his sacrifice that make him a true hero.
One of the greatest Greek mythological stories portrayed in a movie would be Hercules. Hercules is a well-known hero; he displays a supernatural individual who has to overcome the villain and his bad monsters. In “Creating the Myth” by Linda Seger, she argues that the hero myth as many obstacles (the death experience, the road back, the reborn) that he or she need to overcome to be transformed into a hero. However, these obstacles play a very important role in the hero’s stage of initiation. The movie “Hercules” by Walt Disney and the creator Alan Menken, we encounter the characters of the movie which are Hercules of course, Philoctetes the trainer, Pegasus the horse, loyal companion, Megera the love of Hercules and Hades the
The Disney Hercules is born of the Olympian gods, Zeus and Hera, after which he is kidnapped by Hades, the ruler of the underworld, who wishes to overthrow Zeus and usurp this throne. However, he needs Hercules out of the way first. Although Hades' plan to kill Hercules in infancy fails, Hercules is turned into a mortal on earth, where he is left feeling like an outcast. After Hercules leaves his (unbeknownst to him) adoptive parents to find his destiny, he discovers his true origins and strives to return to Olympus by becoming a true hero. But to do this, he must first learn what it means to be a "true hero" while overcoming the obstacles that Hades throws his way. Although this plot is entertaining to younger audiences, it deviates from the original myth, according to which Heracles was the son of Zeus and a mortal woman (a demi-god). In addition, neither was Heracles kidnapped by Hades, nor did Hades want to overthrow Zeus; he submitted to Zeus and sought pleasure in ruling the Underworld. Accordingly, Disney chose to represent Hades as the antagonist in this movie due to his role as leading the Underworld. Although the Underworld was not correlated to Hell in any way, the stereotypical idea of the Underworld being a symbol of evil was still present. Therefore, Disney's choice of casting Hades as the evil character in this movie is justified as a Hercules has to defeat some kind of evil before emerging as a
Then, he is suddenly forced into an unknown environment; a huge difference between his regular circumstances and his new one is established (Vogler). Hercules, who is the hero of the film Hercules, is presented as the baby of loving parents and Greek gods Zeus and Hera, who reside on Mount Olympus. Zeus creates a winged horse named Pegasus, since he wants Hercules to have a friend. Everything in their life is perfect. However, baby Hercules is unexpectedly stolen in the middle of the night by Pain and Panic, the devious minions of the wicked Hades (Hercules). They almost take Hercules’ powers after they give him a mystical potion. A loving couple, Amphytryon and Alcmene, discover Hercules all alone and decides to adopt him. Hercules grows to be a young man, but the citizens of his town despise him and call him a freak because of his strange power. Hercules’ ordinary world is composed of all these events.
Hercules the mighty Hercules has changed overtime. I know this because in the beginning of the text it says "what good is my strength if all it does is scare people away" but at the end he was happy with his powers because he finished all of his tasks using his powers. This shows he changed because he floated up to Mount Olympus which means he changed from mortal and god to full god by using his powers. Also, he changed emotionally to. I know he changed emotionally because in scene 3 Hercules always knew he was different but never knew why or how but in scene 3 Hercules was told he was the son of Zeus.
Family values is a very large difference between Hercules and “Heraclês”. In the very beginning of the movie, it is shown that Hera was Zeus’ only wife and the father of Hercules. However, in the myth, Zeus has many wives, and his child Heraclês
When Hercules went to Eurystheus, the king eagerly started to think of twelve labors for Hercules. What Hercules didn’t know was that Hera was influencing the king to think of tasks that seemed to be impossible. However, no matter what task Hercules had to complete, he always came back with the task completed. After twelve years and twelve labors, he was finally released. Hercules’ went on to live a life full of adventures, and he even remarried to a woman named Deineira. Deineira became very jealous when Hercules took King Eurystheus’ daughter Lole prisoner for vengeance. She feared Hercules was being unfaithful to her, and wanted to make sure she was the only woman he loved. She took the blood of a centaur (that she was tricked into thinking would make Hercules love her forever) and smeared it on his robe, but it turned out to be poison. Hercules began to die when he put the robe on, but it ended up only killing the mortal part of him. Hera decided to end her
Hercules, or known in Latin as Heracles, was the greatest of the Greek heroes, a paragon of masculinity. In art, Hercules was portrayed as a powerful, muscular man wearing lion's skin and armed with a huge club. He was also described as being a macho man buffoon, who was very impulsive. Hercules’ home and birthing place is in Thebes, Greece. Thebes is a city in central Greece. It plays as an important setting in many Greek myths, such as the stories of Cadmus, Oedipus, Dionysus and many other important roles in Greek Mythology. The demigod, Hercules has an interesting origin, he is most famous for his 12 labors, and leaves a legacy in words and expressions.
Watching the Hercules 2014 film, it was incredibly easy to identify Hercules with all of his classic looks – the Nemean lion armor/helmet, his incredible size and strength, and the constant retelling of his feats by his nephew. Two major changes and points of discussion however, were this created story of Hercules’ identity as a mercenary/family man, and the idea that Hercules was not literally the son of Zeus and it is all an exaggerated story. First off, the whole plot of the movie revolves around Hercules and his newfound ‘team’ of mercenaries doing empires’ biddings for payment. With that said, there is an overarching theme of Hercules seeking to have a family. Hercules, in a flashback to his times pre-labors with his wife and children,
Take a minute to look at the world around you. Notice how different people are. Notice how lucky some people are. Notice how unlucky some people are. Notice the amount of people who are so famous or popular. Then notice those who are nobodies. Disney’s Hercules is a film about a young hero, Hercules, who was born a God, but was forcefully taken of everything but his strength. He was taken of this by Hades, the God of the underworld, who is out to destroy the other Gods of the world and destroy Olympus forever. Throughout the movie Hades is faced with the fact that Hercules may return to stop him from pursuing his evil plan. Hades goal is then to defeat Hercules and finish his scheme . In the film Hercules, the writers use the evil genius to reveal, that humanity will use many resources in order to make themselves seem better than others because they fear that since they may be less fortunate than them, they may be overlooked by the society around them.
Throughout the movie and book Hercules I could spot many differences and similarities. The movie Hercules has the antagonist by the name of Hades, what proves he’s the antagonist is the fact that he is trying to rule Mount Olympus and goes after Hercules and Zeus to get his spot in the Family line. Hercules the movie has the plot structure of Man vs. Society because Hercules is defeating evil and tries to prove the people he is a god. The theme of the movie is, it doesn’t matter whether you're strong or famous what matters is that you stay true to your heart. In this movie there are many characters such as Phil (trainer), Hades (Villain), Megara (His Love). Hercules in the movie was adopted and found by his “mother” in the beginning her name
Authors, poets, and film directors have all used ancient stories to create new pieces of literature and film works for modern times. The animated Disney film Hercules (1997) and the myth of Hercules share the background of audience-driven narratives; however, Disney's aspiration to fill the theaters and earn money results in an unblemished narrative, while the original myth portrays an imperfect model to a flawed humanity.
Hercules Hercules was a demi-god which is the reason he had so many super human powers. His mother was Alcmene and his father was Zeus who deceived Alcmene by disguising himself as her husband. Because Hercules was a demi-god he was able to clash with gods and win. He is also regarded to be the strongest man to ever live. This is show when he was young and one night when he was in his nursery with his half-brother, two giant snakes came into the room and Hercules straggled them both.
