Career and College Research Paper Cosmetology is the general work on others hair and skin. The area of cosmetology I am going for is hair. I find working on other people’s hair fun and interesting. Makeup and nails are other areas of interest for me. I am going to be studying cosmetology to become licensed as an entrepreneur for hair, makeup, and helping to make the lives of others better. A person in this career field definitely needs to be an outgoing person because this occupation requires being around a lot of people. They need to have customer service skills and be a polite and pleasant person. A cosmetologist needs to have good listening skills because when a client comes in they are going to have requests and needs that the stylist is going to need to meet. They want to be creative and keep up with the latest hair trends that their clients are going to want. A cosmetologist needs to be very organized and have time management skills. They have to keep track of schedules and make sure they can get through with a client on time to get started with the next one (“Summary”). I need to do some research on more financial aid and research the full cost of everything and find out how much I need to make a month at a job to cover everything including food and rent. I will keep my grades up by staying focused on the assignments day by day. I will also make sure to ask lots of questions when i have them. Other things that might be important to do, is talk to experienced cosmetologists and ask them how they got through college and what steps they took to achieve their life
Salons need to stay current on the new trends and style within the hair industry and a local cosmetology school can help with that. Keeping a current relationship with the local school can help with the technicians learning new techniques from the local school. Most schools hold training classes and continued education courses for current stylist. The school may contact the salon and make them aware of upcoming courses and the manager will relay the messages to the current techs at the salon. Or the Salon and Spa owners will set up training courses to be taking at the salon.
Every since I was a child I have had a passion for doing other people’s hair. When I was little I would use my baby dolls as clients and work on their hair until it was perfect and neat. I have chosen to be in the cosmetology field because I like to help other people with their needs and wants as well as mine. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Many people go to cosmetology school to work for someone else, but I would like to open up a mini-salon out of my own home someday.

In order to become a cosmetologist, I will have to take certain steps. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, I must graduate from a state-licensed barber or cosmetology school. I must also have a high school diploma or equivalent. The ages vary from state to a state of how old I have to be to attend a hair school. Most states require that I to be at least 17 or 18 to apply. There are some states that will allow enrollment at the age of 16.After I have graduated from a state-approved training I will be required to take a test.The test will be a written test and/or in some cases it may be a test of styling skills or an oral exam. To become a cosmetologist, a person will have to attend a beauty school/cosmetology school, to learn the techniques required. These techniques are, but not limited to hair cutting, perming, coloring, nails, and makeup as well as waxing. In order to get a license, a person will need to pass the board exam after they have completed cosmetology school. Each state has different requirements in order to pass, these differences include how many hours of school needed before taking the exam. Each class can take between 9 to 15 months to finish, depending on if a person chooses full or part time.

Most people care a lot about their appearance, and are willing to spend time and money to go get their hair or makeup done, especially for special occasions. That’s why there will always be a need for cosmetologists in mostly every area. Getting a general cosmetology license covers everything including doing hair, nails and makeup. Or, you can get licensed to be a nail technician or esthetician (¨Cosmetologist¨). Personally, I would rather get a general cosmetology license so I have the freedom to do whatever services I want or whatever services are in highest demand by client’s. I’ve also decided that someday in the future I would like to manage a salon, either corporate owned or my own business. For this I will have to go to college and get a degree in business administration along with my cosmetology license. I think being a cosmetologist is a good career for me because I see a lot of positives and very few negatives from the research I’ve done. Even if the education might be challenging, managing a salon will be a satisfying career for me because the labor market outlook is positive, the salary and hours are sustainable, and I will enjoy the challenging and diverse nature of the work and rewarding social interactions.
