This modern world lives on people helping other people. The stories “Raymond’s Run” and “Everything Will be Okay” are two completely different stories, as one is about a boy who finds and helps a kitten, and the other is about a girl who like to run and looks out for her brother. Both stories share a common theme, however. The authors, Toni Cade Bambara and James Howe, respectively, both show that it’s more important to help others than yourself.
In Toni Cade Bambara’s short story, “Raymond’s Run,” the author illustrates that Squeaky, the main character, transitions from a selfish runner to a helpful coach, showing that it's good to help others, especially when they can use the help for a task they're doing. In the beginning of the story,

Throughout the entire story, James realizes that he can’t give up hope for the kitten, as he has no pet under his name. In the beginning, James says “ Don’t worry. Everything will be okay. I’m going to take you home, and my mom will give a bath and some medicine.” This illustrates how James immediately wants to help the kitten, and ultimately care for it. When James comes home, he tells his mom “ We’ll take it to Dr Milk (the vet). He’ll make it better.” This shows that even after his mom doesn’t suggest ending, he still wants to improve the cat's condition. While James was waiting for his brother Paul, to take them to the vet, he tells the kitten “ My big brother will take you to Dr. Milk’s and give you shots and medicine and stuff and you’ll get better, you’ll see. My big brother can fix anything.” This shows his persistence in wanting for the cat to get better. Even as the cat is about to be put to sleep, he says “ It’s half alive, too.” Meaning that as he brother said that it's half dead, he also said they could save it. But despite James’s pleading, his brother still put the cat to sleep. James learned that he always should try to help, to never stop helping. He took care of the car the best he
It had “burrs and bits of wood caught in its coat...and pus coming out of its eyes and nose”(1). He also told himself how his two friends would throw rocks or sticks at the kitten. He doesn't want to hurt the kitten because he feels bad for it. James does not want to be like his friends and family and hurt animals. “‘I’m going to take you home, and my mom will give you a bath and some medicine.’”(Page 1). James wants to help the kitten feel better, and heal. He cares about all animals, even if they do not look very cute at the time. He had also become attached to the kitten, because he gave it a name, Smokey. Another time when he feels pity for an animal is when they had been eating deer meat(Page 2). He had looked out the window at the deer, and saw that “There was life in them still”(page 2). He had been talking about the deer’s eyes. He still saw that the deer was alive, and in pain. This caused him to not to eat the deer meat and to have pity on
Because she saw Raymond running along the sidelines, something sparks inside of her. “Cause if I’ve lost this race, or if me and Gretchen tied… I can always retire as a runner… and coach with Raymond as my champ” (Bambara 111). Squeaky doesn’t care about her win anymore. She is thinking about Raymond’s potential as a runner. Her heart is growing fond at the thought of her brother following behind her footsteps. “My brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition” (Bambara 111). This shows that Squeaky is excited for her brother’s future. He is no longer the annoying ‘little’ brother he always was. Now, he is a person with the ability to run like she can. Finally, even after the man announces that Squeaky won, she looks over at Gretchen. There is no longer venom boiling between them. “And I smile. ‘Cause she’s good, no doubt about it. Maybe she’d like to help me coach Raymond” (Bambara 112). There is a newfound respect between the two girls. Gretchen even smiles back. The walls Squeaky spent so long building up are now crumbling down piece by piece as her mind
Also, in the story, “Raymond’s Run”, Squeaky and how she is open about her opinions, serious about running, and does allow other people to tell her what she has to be. One quote from “Raymond’s Run” that demonstrates the theme
In the short story “Raymond's Run” by Toni Cade, Squeaky Is the “spunky kid’. Squeaky is very spunky because, she does whatever makes her happy, and is not afraid to stand up for herself or anybody else. In the short story, it is shown that she does whatever makes her happy. Although running is not the most popular sport, and not many people do it, she still does it (1). This shows how she is spunky because she does not care what everyone else is doing, she just does what makes her happy. She also isn't afraid to stand up for herself, or anyone else. Not only is she not scared to stand up for herself, but for her brother. “You got anything to say to my brother, you say it to me, Mary Louise Williams of raggedy town, Baltimore” (3). This shows
In both of the stories, Everything Will Be Okay, by James Howe and Raymond’s Run, by Toni Cade Bambara, the main characters think differently about their brothers. In the story Raymond’s Run, the main character, Squeaky loves running, frightens others who participate, and realizes that even though her brother is disabled, he is still able to do what others can do. In the story Everything Will Be Okay, the narrator realizes that he wants to be on his own, and doesn’t want to be like his brothers. In Everything Will Be Okay, by James Howe, the narrator is always judged by his brothers because he acts “like a sissy”.
In Toni Cade Bambara’s story, “Raymond’s Run,” Bambara describes Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker, a young girl, who is training for an annual race. Hazel is confident that she will win the race just as she has for the last few years. Her brother Raymond has a disability, hydrocephalus, and Hazel is responsible for him. The race begins and Hazel wins however the race is close. The theme of Bambara’s short story is: It is good to have self confidence; however it is also good to have respect for and/or recognize the talents of others. This theme is evident in the short story when Hazel is bragging before the race. Hazel states, “There is no track meet that I don’t win the first place medal. I used to win the twenty yard dash when I was a little
When Squeaky explains about her preparation for jogs she says, “...which I have to do account of I'm serious about running and, I don't care who knows it”(p.7,
Squeaky found value in Raymond when he climbed the fence, Squeaky became so excited. “And by the time he comes over i’m jumping up and down glad to see him- my brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition.” (Bambara 7) In fact, Squeaky was so happy she decided that she would rather stop track and help train Raymond. She even wondered if one of her competition would like to help. “Maybe she’d like to help me coach Raymond; she obviously is serious about running, as any fool can see.” (Bambara 7) That is how Squeaky finally
In the story Raymond’s run squeaky loves to run. Squeaky is training for the run that she has one for the last 4 years. And all the runners in it squeaky does not. Because she is competing with them .All the runners in it like to run just like squeaky. Every year they try and try and she don’t know that the runners are getting there felling’s hurt but squeaky don’t think nothing about it.Then the day comes race day. Squeaky wins it again and she realizes that Raymond was running right beside her on the other side of the fence and Gretchen right beside her huffing and puffing like a pro does then squeaky realizes that she don’t have to hate her competitors and that she can do whatever she wonts if she believes in herself. Then she thinks
The protagonist of Robert Newton’s novel ‘Runner’, Charlie Feehan is able to succumb to success through his raw talent and personal ambitions in the ability to run, alongside his persisting confidence. Despite his flair, it is ultimately the people around Charlie, who assist him in his accomplishments and success. Charlie benefitted greatly from the advice and support of Mr Redmond and Squizzy Taylor, and through poverty, which was a driving force behind the want of triumph which continued to drive and sustain Charlie.
Raymond has some mental problems, and he when he runs, it looks very awkward. People laugh at him, and Raymond gets very upset. Squeaky, Raymond’s older sister, tells people to stop making fun of him. Squeaky wins a school race, and Raymond runs outside the fence with her the whole race. She realizes that she can train Raymond to run. People won’t be able to laugh at him if he is
In the story it states “And by the time he comes over I’m jumping up and down so glad to see him- my brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition.” Squeaky had just realized that Raymond is an awesome runner. She wants to be his coach and help him run track. Although Raymond was mentally challenged he was still good at something. One day people will look up to him cause he’s different from other people and he’s mentally challenged and doing things they never thought
It might seem like “Everything will be ok” and “Raymond’s Run” are two very different kinds of stories. One is about an ill cat and one is about a “little” girl having problems letting people in and making friends. Both stories are realistic fiction. Although, both stories share the same theme. In both stories the author teaches us that it is okay to be yourself.
Do you think that Raymond will be a runner like Squeaky. Me personally I do think he will be a good runner and he learns from watching squeaky and practicing with her every day. Raymond wants to be like squeaky as you can tell if you read the passage when it says he copied her every move before the race started. If squeaky showed and teaches him what she know he will be even faster than he already is. The faster Raymond get he will have a better chance of winning a race.
“I will never work for Dr. Milk. (for those of you guys who don't know Dr. Milk he is a kind a vet that takes care of animals and all of James’s brothers had worked for him part time.) I will never go hunting with my father. I will decide for myself what kind of boy I am, what kind of man I will become.” The first thing I am going to say is that your family members including yourself are a powerful influence. But after reading this part of the story you can infer that James had a disagreement with his brother Paul (Paul is the second youngest brother in James's family. He is the one who has spent the most time with
