Nearly (BE #4). every person that was old enough to comprehend what happened on September 11, 2001 remembers exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard about the attacks. September 11, 2001 was one of the most tragic days in U.S. history and has impacted the country ever since. Al Qaeda had been planning to invade the United States for quite a long time. They started strategizing for the attacks in 2000. Osama Bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda, wanted a strike on America that would impact everyone. He approved a plan that stated Al Qaeda would use hijacked airplanes to attack multiple targets in the United States. President Bush’s (BE #12). first reaction was the thought that the pilot had a heart attack. However (BE #7), as soon as the President realized that this was an act of terrorism, he declared war with the statement “I made up my mind at that moment that we were going to war” (Haulley 2005). In President Bush’s first address to the public after the attacks, he stated: “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America.” (“9/11 Attacks,” 2010.)
As a result of the attacks, more than 3,000 people were killed, including 343 New York City firefighters. 23 New York City police officers killed, 37 Port Authority police officers killed, and thousands treated for injuries – these are other tragic happenings on the day of the attacks. (SS #9). (“9/11 Attacks,” 2010.) The victims of the attacks ranged in age from two years to 85 years, with about 80% of those being men. There have been many memorials constructed in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The 9/11 Memorial Plaza and 9/11 Memorial Museum are located at Ground Zero. There are 16 acres at the World Trade Center, and the plaza is an eight-acre park that contains approximately 400 white oak trees and the largest manmade waterfalls in the United States. Each pool contains a waterfall, and each pool is one-acre in size. The names of each person who passed away in both the terrorist attacks on February 26, 1993 and September 11, 2001 are engraved around the memorial pools in bronze. On the plaza there is also a tree that is known as “The Survivor Tree.” It gained the name of “The Survivor Tree” when the tree was discovered severely damaged after September 11, and was removed from the rubble and given to the New York City Parks and Recreation Department to take care of it. The special tree recovered and rehabilitated, and was then placed back on the memorial in 2011. The tree still stands there today, as a reminder of resilience and survival. The museum contains exhibits, archives and artifacts, while also honoring not only those who passed away, but also those who survived the September 11 terrorist
