After collecting data on movie times and the years that they were released, I have concluded that many times have increased as the years have passed, however not all movie lengths are greater than the length of the movies in the 1970’s. I collected a total of 11 movies and their times, two of which being movies from the 70’s. Five of the other movies that I researched were longer than the lengths of the two movies from the 70’s, two of them were within the range, and two of them were lower than the range of the lengths of the two movies. Most of the movies would follow a pattern, but every so often, an outlier would appear in the data. My results are not entirely reliable because did not collect a substantial amount of movies and their times,
“Steel Magnolias” is a story about the close-knit relationships between six eccentric Southern women living in a small town in Louisiana. The film has a home spun, unpretentious feel to it. The plot alternates between humorous, everyday events with good-natured quips and the seriousness and heartaches to life’s unexpected crises. Through the laughs and tears, the six women learn to endure hard times and emerge from the struggles with grace and dignity. The film is set in the 1980’s with a tight knit homespun atmosphere. The Southern belles who are goofy on the outside but strong enough inside to survive any challenge that life deals them. Friendships help with a
During the end of the 3rd Century, the Playwright Plautus wrote many of the first Roman comedies. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical comedy film adaptation of Plautus's comedies.Set in ancient Rome, many aspects of Roman theatre, including stock characters, were included in the film’s production. While the film is based off of multiple comedies, Plautus's Pseudolus character Calidorus is nearly identical to the film’s Hero. During the time Pseudolus was written, the Crisis of the Third Century led to up to 25% of Roman population being comprised of slaves(Southern). Of the many stock characters Platus included in his comedies, Calidorus/Hero, the son of Pseudolus’s owner and the stock character adulescens, best
Throughout the film Do the Right Thing, we continuously observe racial conflict that builds up to such an extreme point that it leads to a fight for power. This movie portrays the struggles and realities of a neighborhood with white and black African American people. This can be seen in many instances for example when Buggin ' Out, Radio Raheem, and Smiley march into Sal 's and demand that Sal change the Wall of Fame. Another vital instance shows the height of power struggle. It is when the huge fight starts in the street and results in Raheem being killed by a white police officer.
In the story, 1984, we learn that a telescreen is a transmission device, used for sending and receiving information. As seen in the story, this device is mainly used for the Party to spy on Inner and Outer members, in order to maintain order and increase prevention for people to not express any political significance. Corresponding to the story’s scenario, this issue is a satire of governments watching over their civilians, in George Orwell’s time. An example of modern day Orwellianims, relating to this subject, is of the U.S government spying on their civilians. The evidence to this example comes from a Wall Street Journal video, which states that the United States’ NSA and FBI act of secretly recording people through servers used on their cellular or computing devices. Although the companies, that
Film noirs describe pessimistic films associated with black and white visual styles, crime fiction, and dark themes. Sunset Boulevard is a 1950 film noir directed by Billy Wilder. Sunset Boulevard presents many themes that are common with the genre film noir, but also introduces some differences from the typical movie in that genre.
When it comes to the film industry, entertainment is the tool used to acquire what is desired, money. The main goal for filmmakers when they create a film is to attain money in addition to the money spent to make the movie. Therefore, in some films that they like to base off of true accounts, it is somewhat necessary to dramatize or embellish the story to really tug at the heartstrings of the films audience. They achieve this goal by the use of dramatic music, ambient lighting, and a small amount of tweaked diction. The Fighter is an excellent example of this dramatization in action because throughout the film the characters are faced with a multitude of decisions that must be made. The choices they make require the characters to choose
Based on the limited sample, popular movies are generally increasing over the decades. However, more data would need to be collected in order to make an accurate conclusion. I created the inequality 98 ≤ y ≤ 194 to represent my data because none of the movies from the 1980’s to 2000’s were solutions to the inequality for the running time popular movies in the 1970’s. Although some of the movies from the 1980’s and 90’s are shorter than the movies in the 1970’s, all three of the 2000’s movies from my data are longer than the movies from the 1970’s and 80’s. This shows that there has in fact been an increase in movie duration over the decades. I think that the running times of popular movies will continue to increase in the future decades.
Part 1 - In American author's 2009 book, The Help, the primary thesis is the relationship between Black maids and white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s. The story is really told from three perspectives, Aibileen and Minny are Black women, both maids, and Skeeter is the nickname of Eugenia Phelan, daughter of a prominent White family. Skeeter has just finished school and hopes to become a writer. In general, the relationship between the Black maids and the White employers is six sided: On one side we have the White employers who have three views: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that can range from extreme scorn and bias to kindness regarding race; 2) Their public persona that must have the "proper" attitude about Blacks and "the help," and 3) Their employer attitude, which is condescending and parental. The Black view also has three segments: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that usually range from understanding not all Whites are the same and an extreme love and empathy for the White children for whom they care; 2) The public persona that is deferential, polite, and stoic to their White bosses; and 3) Their attitude and view among the Black community, which usually separates the "poor and ignorant but rich" White souls from the Black view of family and common sense. All in all, the relationship is contentious, phony, and based on economic advantage.
I chose to write this project on the movie Grease. Growing up, this was my favorite movie. I chose to write about this movie because I haven't watched it since I was a child, and wanted to look back and reflect if there was anything I hadn’t picked up when I was younger watching this movie. The movie was made in 1978 by director Randal Kleiser, and was based on high school teens in the 50’s. Since it was based in the 50’s and most of us grew up watching this famous movie, I thought that there had to be social norms and stereotypes written and performed throughout the whole movie. The movie stars the famous actor John Travolta, who was a very young and upcoming actor in the 70’s. Since this was created in the late 70’s, there was a big push for equal rights of gays and lesbians going on in the real world at this time. I thought this movie would be a great example of gender, and other social political conflicts to help shape younger kids in the way “we are supposed to be”.
I watched the film Grease which was directed by Randal Kleiser. This film took place at Rydell High which was full of fun, crazy students. In the beginning, Sandy Dumbrowski who was the new girl in school arrives at school. She explains how over the summer she and a boy named Danny Zuko had a brief love affair. However, it turns out he is a leader of a greaser gang, the T-Birds. Sandy tells her new classmates about how sweet Danny was and how he was different from other boys, but she doesn’t know that he lies and make stories up about their relationship to his friends. From watching the film, you can easily tell that the kids at Rydell High have to deal with many issues. Some of the issues would be having relationship issues, teen pregnancy, dropping out of school, and friendship problems. In the end, Sandy and Danny compromise their differences with each other and their friends and end up being together and being happy. The medium of performance is film and the production company of this film was RSO Records.
The 2012 movie Argo is based off of a true event in 1979. During the Iranian Civil War, President Jimmy Carter gives the Iranian Shah refuge in the U.S. due to his illness. In retaliation, Iranian activists invade the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran and the staff are taken as hostages. This is famously known as the Iranian hostage crises. Although six of the staff members escape and are taken in by the Canadian Ambassador. Determined to rescue the six, Tony Mendez, who is our main character, from the CIA is brought in because of his expertise. After talking to his son one day while watching a science fiction program on TV, he comes up the idea to go into Iran, under the guise of Canadians
evidence of the changing roles of female involvement within terrorist organisations along with increasing numbers of female Islamic terrorists (Bakkers & de Leede, 2015; Lavina, 2015).
The film, the Untouchables, was directed by Brian De Palma. It was set in the prohibition era, which was right at the start of the 1920’s. Prohibition can be described as a law that made selling and manufacturing alcohol illegal. By putting this law into effect, it actually increased the amount of crime and violence throughout cities in the US. This was ultimately due to the rise in organized crime, also known as gangs. In the movie specifically, it was centered around the rise of the Mafia in Chicago. By looking at the production of the movie, we can see how during prohibition, the Mafia controls everything and the violence ultimately it leads to.

I like observing people. And conserving my energy, I mean, how many people would do something if it didn’t improve their life? Even if I were a social butter (which I am almost definitely not) I would most likely be a dark, brooding moth. Just waiting until someone finally makes it move. Have I shared a PB&J with anyone? No. Do I want your PB&J? Most definitely not. I like my own PB&J. You may believe that this is related to the fact that I have almost no friends, and that the friends I have are my Mom, my sis, and my dog, Art.
