3 Key Factors Leading To The American Revolution

There was no one event that started the American Revolution. This paper will address the problems that lead to the start to the American Revolution. The colonists believed that they should live democratically. Britain felt that they owned the American colonies and they could use their resources in any way that they wished. The colonists did not want to live being ruled by another country. The major events that led to the American Revolution were the French and Indian War, Stamp Act, Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party and Lexington Concord.

Patrick Henry “ Give me Liberty or Give me Death.” In the 1760’s Patrick Henry presented “The Speech of The Virgina Convention.” The speech was about going to war with the British so they could have independence. In that period of time people were interested in religon, war, freedom, expansion. The people stuggled with family members dying in war, having materials and supplies for war.

The American colonists reacted with a secret organization called the Sons of Liberty who were supposed to intimidate the agents who collected the taxes. The colonists then made the Stamp Act Congress, who passed a document that claimed all American colonists are equal to all other British citizens. They thought it was unfair since they didn’t have a place in the British Parliament and protested “no taxation without representation!”

“Give me liberty or give me death!” is an iconic American quote that invokes feelings of patriotism and pride, still to this day. Patrick Henry, a Virginian lawyer, first spoke these words in his speech to the Virginia Convention in 1775, while trying to coerce the assembly to retaliate against British occupation of America. In his speech, he uses three rhetorical appeals to get the convention to gather an army.

¨Give me Liberty or give me death!¨ Patrick Henry demanded in the Speech of the Virginia Convention. Henry and Thomas Jefferson both important figures in getting Americans to move forward and take a stand against Great Britain, presented an important speech and moving document. Both talk about how they had petitioned for freedom of the king, how the king had sent troops over and how he constantly made them feel weakened.

The colonists and patriots had many issues with Great Britain. The British Parliament gave out acts like the Stamp Act and Townshend acts that made the colonists pay many taxes. They wanted to rebel and break away from Great Britain. The patriots decided to declare independence from Britain because of the Battle of Bunker Hill and high taxes that were imposed.

The Americans were sick and tired of Britain’s actions and policies, and would rather die than have no freedom. They were desperate for liberty… even if their lives were on the line. The colonists had arrived to the “New World” for several reasons. But most came for freedom, to do what they pleased. Before King George III came to power, they had this. They could worship freely, and could do whatever they’d wanted. However, during the rule of this king, everything was chaos. Several wars broke out, and the colonists we unhappy due to unfair treatment. Finally, they were fed up and had had enough. They began attempting to separate themselves from Britain. March 23, 1775 a group of Virginian delegates gathered in St. John’s Church in Richmond to discuss the ever looming war with the English crown. It was in this Church where Patrick Henry would deliver one of the most influential speeches in the history of America. “Give me Liberty or Give Me Death” (3). He exclaimed to the sound of thunderous applause, he was trying to inspire a nation to rebel against their British oppressors. His speech was given two weeks before the revolution began and is accredited to inspiring the nation to take up arms and rebel. His appeals to emotion and logic make this a powerful and inspiring speech.

The American Revolution was caused by many built up issues between the British and their colonists in America. Two of the main issues were that the colonists wanted independence from Britain and when the British kept taxing the colonists without consent from them, they got even more fed up.

Many colonists were angered because of high taxes England chose to enforce on them. These taxes were a result of the British participation and victory in the French and Indian war. However, what made the colonists even more angry was the fact that they were being taxed without representation in England’s Parliament. The colonists thought that, in order to be taxed by the British, they should have representation in it. They saw it as unfair to be taxed by a government they had no say in. As Patrick Henry said in his speech made to the Virginia House of Burgesses, “We can under law be taxed only by our own representatives...The Stamp Act is against the law. We must not obey it…” (Doc. 1). Since many colonists thought this taxation broke the law, some of them chose to protest by going to the House of Burgesses, boycotting imports, or simply not paying it in response. There were three mains reasons that caused the American Revolution. The three important reasons were Taxation without Representation, The Boston Tea Party and The 1st Continental Congress Meeting.

The causes of the American Revolution go back to the beginning of salutary neglect and the French and Indian War, as well as changes in the thinking of society. The effects of these events and other factors led to pressure within the colonies, ultimately resulting in rebellion.
