The book points out that most conduct disorders have been tied to parent-child relationships, inadequate parenting, etc. Do violent video games contribute to these disorders as well?
As someone who has played multiple violent videogames, I can personally say that they have not caused me to develop any childhood problems. Video games provide many people with a safe virtual area to relief stress. “...it does seem that playing violent games may help reduce stress and make people less depressed and hostile” (Dr. Christopher J. Ferguson, 2010). Ferguson took a group of 103 young adults, gave them a frustrating task and randomly gave them either no game, a nonviolent game, a violent game as a good character,
First off, the type of video game does not matter in causing violence as much as the amount of time spent playing does. As stated in a study by the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University, ”Those children who spend more time playing games might be slightly likelier to be hyperactive and to get into fights. But violent video games seem to have no effect on behavior, according to British researchers”. So videogames, both violent and non-violent, when played for too long, can lead to more aggression. In the same study, it’s stated that “The researchers found that the 22 kids who played video games the most each day were the likeliest to have behavioral problems, exhibit hyperactivity and have trouble academically, although the effects were "quite small in magnitude,” So, even though there were behavioral changes in
A CNN report stated “A recent meta-analysis in 2010 of 12 earlier studies found a link between time spent playing bloody video games and violent behavior later in life.” Being exposed to the idea of violence can put ideas in your head and can cause a more likely chance for someone to act on their thoughts of
“Evidence that the negative effects of playing violent video games can accumulate over time and cause people to view the world as a hostile and violent place, said study co-author Brad Bushman, a professor of communication and psychology at Ohio State University” (Preidt). With that people tend to think and act hostile when playing those types of games. “Playing video games could be compared to smoking cigarettes," Bushman said. "A single cigarette won't cause lung cancer, but smoking over weeks or months or years greatly increases the risk”(Bushman). With this statement it's true when it comes to the first time when playing violent video games that it won't do any hurt at all but when you constantly play violent video games you just are setting yourself up for mental changes. As for mental changes I mean by the way people think about events that happen in real life such as a shooting or something along those lines, people won't be affected because they’ll think those are normal. As for all of this violent video games do a lot more mental damage than people
There is overwhelming scientific research that suggests that playing violent video games are harmful to children and adolescents. The scientific evidence has uncovered several areas in the development of children and adolescent that are negatively impacted because of the exposure to and playing of violent video games. Some of the key areas that are negatively affected include brain activity, stress levels and behavior.
Numerous studies have been done, showing no direct correlation between video games and actual violence. “The US Secret Service conducted a review in 2004 aimed at identifying causes of school shootings, and it found just 12 percent of studied attackers -- that's 5 out of 41 -- expressed an interest in violent video games”(Conditt, 2018, para 6). It was found that video games actually decrease violence in the real world. There was an economic study conducted in 2016 that found, ¨a reduction in crime in the weeks after major video game releases¨ (Conditt, 2018, para 7). This is because the video games give people an outlet to release violent thoughts and frustrations in a safer, virtual environment. In fact, video games actually decrease violence on the
Video games can indeed cause some form of effect on a person's behavior. It's not really a question of how, but who can be influenced by it. Mostly children and the mentally ill are susceptible to such things. Children are young and may not realize what they are doing which can result in them doing something that can be harmful without realizing the danger in the action. As far as the mentally ill, if the illness causes some serious mental instability and anything could affect the behavior of the person a lot then caution is recommended to be used when around video games. If someone was to be influenced by some form of video games, it may cause a child to try to re-enact a part from the game and as a result, cause some serious harm. This can include many things like: Assault, shootings, cursing, and even death. While such actions are a possibility, they are unlikely considering youth violence is actually declining.
It may seem odd that one would think that a video game could possibly have a negative effect on children. Especially when you discover all of the logical fallacies in their argument. Although some people have some decent points, most studies done on this subject have no direct correlation with the violence in children that happen to play violent video games. A study done in 2008, deemed with the title “Grand Theft Childhood” reported that 60% of middle school boys who played at least one M-rated game had previously hit or beat up another
In conclusion, video games that are violent can be very perilous to not only kids but anyone who plays them. They can have short and long-term effects on your career and the way you think. Violent games are bad because they can lead to serious actions, the player can get hurt, and because they can distract us. Making the choice to play this game is not only affecting you but it can affect the people around you and how they think of you. So next time you go to play games you should think about the consequences that come with
Matt Peckham supports the theory that games do not cause bad behavior. In his web document on Time.com, he uses a sarcastic tone but yet provides the reader with a study performed by Stetson University. Surprisingly, “In my recent research we found that for some teens with a pre-existing mental health issue, playing violent video games seemed to be associated with less bullying” (Peckham 2). Other people may argue that the ability of a game to cause conflict with people’s personality is more of a conflict with their mind and body. Robbins states that video games can only cause bad behavior when allowed to by the human brain, so basically, the games are not for the weak-minded. Robbins also asks the question “Would you blame sports?” and then states “I’m not contending that there is no connection between violent games and violent people, but it’s correlative instead of causative. Individuals with personalities that lead to homicide are likely more drawn than others to media that feed their fantasies” (Robbins 1). He states here that people with a pre-existing desire for violence are more likely to display violent behavior after playing these video games.
I believe there are other contributing factors to childhood disorders; I don’t believe that video games alone can cause the onset of a disorder in children. Yes, video game violence can be influential on any child, the fact that oppositional defiant disorder is more prevalent in boys than girls would support this. Boys are more likely to play video games that include violence. There have been many studies done to prove whether or not there is a link between video game violence and aggression in children and adolescence. In most cases, the correlations of the two are very weak, showing few results of any connection between a child’s violence and the games that they play. Bandura conducted studies on violence in order to support his theory of modeling which I find to be much more accurate than
The effects of both violent and non-violent video game playing can be determined by the amount of time playing the video game and by the content of the games being played. The content of the games being played could definitely have a factor in how a child performs in school, and how aggressive they are towards peers and teachers. Obviously if a child is playing hours upon hours of violent video games, this can lead to them acting out violence and having no consequences for it. If a child took the time that they played video games a week and used that time to be engaged in reading, homework or even a creative activity we’d have less issues with our children’s school performances. Parents should really be monitoring how long their child is playing video games, but this doesn’t always happen. A child who plays video games for long periods of time could also build up a social wall, become a loner. It is important for children to interact with other children in order to help develop their social skills, which without will make it very difficult to make it in this world. At the age children start playing video games, it is hard for them to distinguish what is reality and what is not. So in some cases the violent acts in video games could make the child believe the world is a scary place.
As many parents and educators like to emphasise, “Violent video games make kids more violent”. Video games affecting youth is a very debatable topic. Most people just come to that conclusion without acquiring any evidence or reason, but there are some reasons why this is a wrong assumption. I believe that violent video games are actually good for people. They allow them to have an escape from real life which is positive, the violence allows people (young people in particular) to think morally about what they are doing, and most violent games let children have fun with their friends.
I personally enjoy playing video games myself, but I was never those aggressive hardcore gamers. I also never thought much about these different types of games because I only see them as a time to waste when you’re bored or to have fun. However, I have seen my younger siblings, who are in elementary to junior high school; watched these kind of violent games on YouTube, I would hear faint violent yelling or common conversations from their room. I’ve also noticed that there are a lot of adventure games where a character has weapons to defend themselves from threats, and it got me curious if these types of games will affect us in some way. Since I’m a casual gamer, I thought this topic would be interesting because I’ve never thought much about violent video games causing people to become more threatening. So does violent video games affect us to have a violent behavior?
Video games and violence have different effects on children according to the type of video games that is being watched It is important to understand the world of video games. All video games do not prevent violence in children. Parents should take into consideration in monitoring their child while choosing video games. Depending on the video game that is chosen, does not mean the child will result in violent behavior later on in life. There are many types of video games that may promote either positive or negative effects in children.
As a matter of fact video games do affect your body. Playing violent video games has aggressive thinking, and aggressive behavior. Video game that are dangerous have been more highly to become an issue for smart people like scientists and the public. There are people who are concern that playing violent video games might just increase the risk of aggression in people who are playing the game. People are aware that teens talk about weapons highly dangerous weapons that can hurt people. They are afraid that one of the teens will try it on someone they might just hurt the person they live with. In 2011 the field of video game violence experienced serious of repudiations.
