Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice
The changes to both student health needs and healthcare during the 21st century have an impact on school nursing practice today. It was because of these changes that the “National Association of School Nurses (NASN) developed the visual and conceptual Framework that explains the key principles of school nursing and provides structure and focus to current evidence-based school nursing practice” (NASN, 2016, p.45). The ultimate goal of the framework for the 21st century “is to provide a resource to guide school nurses in their practice” in order “to help students be healthy, safe, and ready to learn” (NASN, 2016, p.45). The first Framework is care coordination which is a daily practice that is based on assessment of the student and family needs. This Framework is focus on communication to make sure that students whether they have a special care need or not, get the best care in school by using different areas such as, case management, chronic disease management, collaborative communication, direct care, education, interdisciplinary teams, motivational interviewing/counseling, nursing delegation, student care plans, student-centered care, student self-empowerment, and transition planning. The second Framework is leadership, which is a mind-set, not a formal position but is a standard of professional performance for school nursing practice (NASN, 2016). Therefore, as leaders school nurses can be advocates, change agents, education reform, funding and reimbursement specialist, healthcare reform, lifelong learner, models of practice, technologists, policy development and implementation, professionalism, and systems-level leadership. The third Framework is quality improvement which is a continuous and systematic process that leads to measurable improvements and outcomes and is an integral part of current standards of practice (NASN, 2016). School nurses can help with continuous quality improvement, documentation/data collection, evaluation, meaningful health/academic outcomes, performance appraisal, research, and uniform data set. The fourth Framework is community/public health that is grounded in school nursing and is consistent with the core functions of public health. This Framework helps school nurses recognize how they can include community/public health in their specialty practice of school nursing (NASN, 2016).
