The 1st 2016 Presidential Debate
The first of three 2016 presidential debates held on Monday, September 26, 2016 at Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York. The debate by Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump, the presidential nominees of the Democratic party and Republican party respectively, covered three primary areas: achieving prosperity, America’s direction and securing America. The debate was anchored by Lester Holt of NBC’s nightly news with Hilary Clinton answering the first question. This paper highlights some of the main points made by each presidential nominee under the aforementioned broad headings and concluding with an opinion of who came out on top. Achieving Prosperity

She emphasized that there is a dire need for a reform in criminal justice system and training for law enforcement agents was a necessity. This training should include re-orientation to deal with the implicit bias that exist in all Americans but is particularly dangerous if allowed to continue to perpetuate in the police force. Additional, she stated it was important that guns be taken out of the hands of those that it should not be in; “if you are too dangerous to fly, you are too dangerous to buy or own a gun”. Hilary also criticized Trump over the birther issue that even after Obama produced his birth certificate, Trump kept pushing the issue even up to January 2016. His 1973 law suit by the Justice department for racial discrimination and many of his negative remarks regarding Muslims does not put Donald Trump in much of a position to promote racial healing, Hilary reiterated. Trump didn’t have much to say regarding healing race relations, other than agree with Hilary on the need for restoring trust and mentioning the need for law and order – with not much on how it will be achieved. Both candidates agreed on the need for better cyber security. However, Trump criticized the Obama administration as having totally loss of control of the internet which America started. Hilary mentioned the need to control ISIS’s cyber activity to minimize online disciplining of ISIS sympathizers. Hilary advocated for an intelligence surge to look for every scrap of information which would also involve working more closely with allies. On physical terrorism, Hilary said air strikes would be intensified while working closely with the Arabs and Kurds to take out ISIS in Rocca. Donald Trump criticized NATO as obsolete and that they only started attacking terrorism due to remarks he had made recently about their ineffectiveness. This statement was pointed out as in accurate by Hilary who noted that NATO had been combating terror alongside the US since 9/11. Trump then raised that issue of temperament stating that Hilary did not have the stamina to be president.
