This quote, from George Orwell’s 1984, indirectly addresses the mindset of the main character, Winston Smith. Smith’s dystopian society is told that all was well in their society and they should be content and grateful with the very little they possess. Smith, slightly remembering things like family and true friendship, from before the rise of their current government, understands that these values are no longer extremely pertinent in his society. Along with these typical values that seemed to disappear in the society, tragedy appeared to banish as well.
