During the 1960s fashion was considered daring, carefree and diverse. There were various trends in the 70s. These were influenced through TV shows and celebrities. The ‘Hippie’ movement started in the late 1960s into the early 70s. The ‘hippie’ style came from all corners of the world. The clothing style and fabrics were inspired by non-western cultures. Natural fabrics and tie-dyed patterns were some of the many popular designs, including handcraft clothes that were often decorated with beads and sequences.

One hairstyle, known simply as “the bob,” would be at the center of this great debate. First introduced during the Great War, the bob haircut would eventually cause a revolution in the way women would wear the bob forevermore. It all started in 1915 with the introduction of the Castle Bob, named after the acclaimed ballroom dancer Irene Castle. While cutting her hair for convenience, little would she know that she would forever be linked with triggering a revolution in 20th-century hair fashion. The Castle Bob would be the first indication of the rage of short hair. The bob haircut was simply a hair cut leveling with the bottom of the ears all around the head. The feminist movement, which took root in the era, lead to a liberated sense of fashion. Women began to wear pants in the workplace with the popularization of the pantsuit (Pendergast 922) to show that they were every bit as capable as men. Hot pants and bell bottom jeans, both styles unique to the era (Pendergast 889), were intended to make a bold statement. Another prominent trend of the 1960s was known as “mod style.” Women wore short, skin-tight skirts and form-fitting tunics (Pendergast 890) unlike anything the fashion world had previously seen. Twiggy, a model, quickly proved herself to be one of the most memorable mod icons of the time (“Twiggy”). One of the most popular and notable styles of the 1960s and 1970s, however, was the “peasant” look. Clothing was modeled after European peasants from centuries earlier; women sported loose-fitting, off-the-shoulder blouses and long, flowing skirts (Pendergast 925). Fashion was also used as a protest of sorts for American youth. Teenagers, male and female alike, creating inexpensive tie-dye clothing as a means of voicing their disapproval for the Vietnam War (Pendergast 927). Young Americans used tie-dye as a form of defiance against societal norms.

There were a variety of different hairstyles, particularly for girls. Boys copied clean-cut hairstyles of 1950s boy bands, however the Beatles changed that quickly. The Beatles influenced boys to grow their hair longer, wear thinner ties and wear tighter pants, creating the look that became known as 'the mod'. Girls, however had different hairstyles including short hair, styles like lacquered hair effects and the up-do known as the beehive. The beehive originated in America during 1958 and became popular in Australia after a few years.

There were many chaotic things that happened in the 60’s including the “Hippie” movement, the Vietnam War, Beatlemania, and the civil rights movement. The “Hippie” movement was based upon the idea of having peace and ending the war in Vietnam. Along with the idea of peace, of course, came the fashion. While the 1950s stressed conformity, the 1960s gave full vent to those impulses. The 1960s was a period of transformational change, when long-held values and social norms broke down and were replaced with idealism and rebellion. It is also described as ‘’a breakthrough, a fleeting moment of glory, a time when a significant chunk of humanity realised its moral potential and flirted with its neurological destiny’’ . The young people did not want to reform the society, they did however want to overhaul it, remake it and if needed, destroy it . The sweeping social changes and prevailing attitudes of the decade were epitomised through the rejection of conventions and traditions associated with many aspects of life, including fashion. As Coco Chanel stated, ‘’fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening’’ . Many of these changes were prompted by the feminist movement, the space race and the Vietnam War. Evidently, new fashion trends emerged which reflected these new ideals. Some of the most prevalent trends included revealing clothing, space age designs and alternative hippie clothing.

A Change in Times The new music, clothing style, and drug use made the 1960s into the decade it was. New genres of music was formed along with the release of new music that reached the top of the charts. The clothing style definitely changed as well.

1960s Pop and Op art Throughout the 1960s Pop and Op art was on of the most popular fashion statements worn. Pop art inspired fashion designers to create more of these types of clothing to their fashion shows. Op art was also a popular type of fashion that was used in fashion shows,These clothes were slightly similar but they still had a lot of difference like Pop art had more color and had bold statements and Op art stood to 2 colors such as black and white. These types of fashion statements made women feel for free for their choice of style and type of clothing worn by women in the 1960s.

In the 1950’s womens fashion was very modern day. With the men back from war the women made sure that their clothing was very suburban as a role in homemakers. A lot of different clothing came into the picture. Sports wear became very popular also. Women started to wear what’s called a poodle skirt but this skirt went very quickly. Jack Kerouac who was a novelist established the beatnik look. This look was a finished dark color look to set the women a part so all the women didn’t look like they were wearing the same color. The teenagers started to dress very efficiently, more casually than their parents. Teenagers wore: full skirts, petticoats, or a super-slim skirt and sweater with bows. A lot of the teenage outfits varied.

People may say that the true years of fashion began in the late nineteen forties and went on through the early nineteen sixties. If you look at fashion today, its almost repeated the look from sixty years ago. In each generation fashion trends become based on history and/or important events. in the nineteen forties fashion was being modeled by the military wear. World War II caused a drastic change in the way clothes were being made and worn. In the nineteen fifties Americans admired the fashion of movie stars and music artists. Media had a strong influence on the wordly trend. The people of the sixties expressed there personalities and emotions through
