Teen Drivers over time have become three times more likely to become involved in a fatal vehicular accident. This statistic often leads to the negative stereotype of teen drivers. However, one must ask why are teens more likely to be involved vehicular accidents rather than any other age group. It would seem that they might have quicker reaction times, and even the ability to pay attention to the road and others around them more. However, these young drivers often attend school for eight hours, participate in extracurricular activities, and then some teens even work part-time even full-time jobs. We have implemented many ways in our society to decrease the amount of car accidents teens get into. Two of these ways are that you have to wait until you are 18 to drive and the other is the graduated license program. These are both effective ways to decrease the amount of teen car accidents, but they both have their pros and cons. Some people may prefer that you should wait until your 18 to drive, and others think the graduated license program is better. I personally think the GDL program is better than waiting until you are 18.

A tire lay torn on across the road, the smell of burning rubber and gasoline filling the air. A police car sits on the side of the road, the officer nearby shaking his head; there has been another crash with the casualties once again being two 16-year-olds.Many accidents occur from young and inexperienced drivers being on the road. 26 states have put systems in place to try and and stop these accidents, these systems are called graduated licenses. Graduated licenses vary in each state, but all GDLs have restrictions to them. Some people are for these GDLs, while others aren’t so sure they help at all.

Considering the leading cause of death in U.S and worldwide teenagers is motor vehicle accidents, does Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws help reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents in teenagers compared to those providing novice drivers with full unrestricted license?

The day a teenager gets their license is an unforgetable moment. Not having to count on their parents to chauffeur them around is like a dream come true. Even though getting your license can be a life changing moment, getting into a car accident caused by distracted driving and is a result of texting or drunk driving could also change your life forever. There is roughly 13.2 million licensed drivers in the United States, and on average nine of those teens each day are killed in a fatal car accident (Lund 28). Graduated licences go off the chart! This restricts teens to a certain amount of driving hours. Now some states are debating whether to get GDLS or keep it the same way it is. Teens having Graduated drivers licence will decrease the number of accidents.

The Graduated Driver License(GDL) has saved many people, which has dropped the teen percent rate down,5 to 15.But GDL’s don't always work,people have mentioned that the reason there aren’t that many crashes are because the driving skills are low.Good and bad, but mostly bad cause of how they don't improve their skills at all.

Death among U.S. teens is led by vehicle crashes. In the year of 2013, around 2,163 teens were killed between the ages of 16-10 in the United States. Around 243,243 were treated in emergency departments for injuries that they suffered in motor vehicle accidents. Around 75% of teen drivers suffer in these accidents due to 3 major mistakes. Those major mistakes include a lack of scanning the road, distractions in the vehicle, and also going to fast for the conditions of the road.

How do we drop the number of teen driving accidents? Many people have asked this question, and some say that we should simply raise the driving age to 18. However, many people, including me, believe we should use a graduated licensing program (GLP). There is even proof showing that this method works. For example, one Current Events article reported that many states that have adopted this program have noticed a sizable decrease in teen car accidents. Also, while changing the driving age to 18 just changes the age of the inexperienced drivers, GLPs help drivers learn at a good rate. Finally, since most GLP programs require parent involvement , the parents can keep them safe while they in the middle of earning their license.

Studies at the AAA say that teens are getting into major car collisions lately in the years. Their is a great number of students that get in car accidents every year. The GDL wants to take action and help solve this major problem in our society. The AAA says teens are only 7% of drivers on the road but they are 20% of car crashes. which are some pretty bad numbers.

Some other drivers say that teenagers at age 14 are to young to be behind the wheel of a car. They believe that 14 is absolutely too young to be driving. They say that a 14 year old will get distracted to easily.They think that texting,calling,and the radio could cause distractions too easily.

     The government has recently said that ever since graduated licensing started, there have been fewer accidents involving young drivers. Looking at it another way, it costs consumers less money, beacause fewer cars need to be repair. By having graduated licensing , there are fewer unexperienced young drivers on our roads. Teen drivers are more like to be influence by peers and other stresses and distractions. This can lead to reckless driving behaviors such as speeding, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and not wearing safety belts. There is no safe amount that you can drink and still drive. This shows that teens do not take driving seriously and also do not realize what can happen to them if they continue with bad driving habits. In fact, insurance rates are high enough as it is for teens now. If they get into a car accident, the insurance rates will sky rocket, their parents may have a hard time being able to afford the insurance. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of fatalities for teens. As stated in a magazine, “Drivers ages 16 to 19 are four times more than likely than older drivers to crash” (Brophy). This quote shows that teen drivers are involved in more traffic accidents then older drivers. It has much to do with the young drivers not being safe and making horrible choices while they are driving or in the car with another person. If teens engage in the driving education course, they will definitely become more knowledgeable about all the safe ways to drive when their parents do not have to ride with them anymore. Teen drivers are involved in many car accidents due to unsafe driving habits. A course on safe driving will give the young driver behind the wheel more experience.
