On July 4th, 1776, the colonists sent a letter to the British declaring their independence for various reasons. The colonists said that the British were overtaxing them and causing violence. The colonists were being taxed far less than the British, and the colonists were the ones that first inflicted violence. The colonists were not just declaring war against Britain because their justifications were lies. The colonists were not victims when they declared war against Britain because they were being under-taxed. The British protected them throughout the French and Indian War and abused tax collectors. The colonists were not right in causing dispersion between them and the British who undertaxed them. At the Boston Tea Party, the colonists dumped chests full of tea in Boston Harbor to protest that Britain was unfairly taxing them. In 1765, the British were paying 25 pounds in taxes per year, whereas the colonists were only paying 1.2 pounds (Doc. 2). The adage of the adage. The colonists were being under-taxed compared to the British, contrary to what they protested about. It was unfair for the colonists to be paid so minimally because the British were paying so much. The colonists should …show more content…
Following the previous argument, the British defended the colonists during the French and Indian War by spending a lot of money on their protection (Doc. 1). The adage of the adage. British speaker Thomas Whatley said the colonists should be taxed more to cover England’s debt because of how the British supported them. It was essentially the least the colonists could do to support their mother country. But then again, the colonists preached that they were being overtaxed when they were not even doing the bare minimum. The colonists were not in the right to bring up conflict with the British due to the support the mother country gave during the French and Indian
The American Colonists were justified to go to war with the British because of the harsh treatment they got. About 12 years after the the French and Indian war the American Colonist found themselves in yet another conflict. After the French and Indian war the British were in major debt. What they did to get themselves out of the debt was start taxing luxury items like tea and glass ect. The Colonist were not happy with this so they decided to boycott all of the taxes. Also the Colonist started the “spinning bee” this was that they did not buy clothes from the british they only made there own. The colonist Put out an Olive branch petition to let bygones be bygones. The British practically ignored this so that set the colonist over the edge and the war began in 1775 at lexington and concord.
Many of the colonists didn’t read or use paper and the tax hadn’t even been levied yet, so there was absolutely no reason or justification for protesting. Lastly, the colonists practically asked Britain to have a tighter hold on them through their childish acts of terrorism. Document B describes the chaos throughout New England, such as the tarring and feathering of tax collectors and the protests. The reason why the British had to establish a more tyrannical government was because the colonists were out of control. If the colonists weren't even able to control themselves, how would they even be fit to run a country?
From the end of the French and Indian War to the beginning of the American revolution, colonial resistance and commitment to republican values escalated. British imperial policies between 1763 and 1776, such as taxes and acts without representation and how the British treated the colonists, pushed these factors over the edge. Countless taxes were placed on the colonists in this time period, including the Sugar, Stamp, Tea, and Currency acts. These were placed on the colonists so that the British could pay back their debt that they acquired during the French and Indian War.
Unjustified taxes and laws forced onto the colonists consequently started the beginning of the revolution. The colonists, who were understanding civilians, accepted most of the taxes that they had to pay until a new act was passed. The king ran the stamp act which unreasonably raised revenue and to one civilian John Dickinson “the raising of revenue was never intended...never did the British parliament, [until the passage of the stamp act] think of imposing duties in America for the purpose of raising a revenue.” (Document 2) This is just one comment from one civilian about his disagreement on the stamp act while others took action and revolted against the Kings new act.
For many years, the American colonists have tried to fight for their independence from Britain. The British needed financial support because of the debt of the French-Indian war and looked towards the colonists. The British taxed in various acts including the Stamp Act and the Townshend Act, which taxed daily goods and all stamps. At the same time, the Boston Massacre and propaganda news was being spread causing even more uproar. All of this uproar, would have never happened if the British were justified for their actions.
The colonists were unfairly taxed with the argument from the British which essentially said that they had to pay for their own protections. n Not only were the British in a high amount of debt for the money that they spent during the French and Indian War, The British also agreed to compensate the Colonists for their services and participation during the War. After the war, when they realized how much debt they were in, the British started taxing the colonists with a claim that they were “ not yet recovered from a war undertaken solely for the Americans’ protection…..a war undertaken for their defense only” (document 1) The thing about this argument is the Colonists were never actually in trouble. In reality, The British were just trying to take land and colonize territories that were within French region. This War was caused by Greed and Britain being power-hungry. The colonists’ only role in this society was to fight and be paid for their services. They were then taxed for things that they were originally produced by them. For Example, the colonists were taxed on tea so they retaliated by dumping tea in to the Boston Harbor. The Colonists thought that the stamp act and the township acts, which both placed taxes on the colonists, was “unconstitutional” and “destructive” (document 2). In addition, the Navigation Acts restricted where the Colonists traded with. The Colonists could only
Before Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence to declare the America’ freedom from Great Britain, the American colonists had been under the tyranny of King George III and Parliament which brought them into poverty and a long period of warfare with other Empire. However, the result of the Seven Years’ War, which took place between 1754 and 1765, sparked the beginning of the American Revolution to fight against Great Britain and to gain freedom from its long period of tyranny. Specifically, when the battle of the Seven Years’ War between Britain and France ended, it left Great Britain with a huge debt that needed to be paid. Members of the Parliament said Britain had fought the long, costly war to save the colonists from the powerful
The colonist were being taxed for a war they weren’t involved in. First, “The British government decided to make the American colonies pay a large share of the war debt from the French and Indian War,” (Social Studies for kids.). British wanted Americans to pay for a war they weren't involved in since the British was in debt. Colonist protested, saying “That these taxes violated their rights as American citizens and shouldn’t pay for Britain's debt.¨Maybe one day society will realize how poor British was after the French and Indian War.
In addition, revenue obtained were to be used also to pay the expenses of governors and judges. As John Hancock states in his document “Bostonians Protest the Townshend Acts” 1768, “Taxes designed for the support of the Civil Government in the Colonies, in a Manner clearly unconstitutional, and contrary to that, in which ‘till of late, Government has been supported, by the free Gift of the People in the American Assemblies or Parliaments”. This was a clear display of corruption, which ultimately, led to a night of anger resulting in rioting and disputes against customs officials. As the American colonists perceived this to be an overthrow on their legislative authority.
The actions of the colonists leading up to and during the war for independence, especially issuing the Declaration of Independence, have been called by some historians illegal and treasonous but was in fact quite justified and considerably illegal on the side of Britain. A lot of events took place in the late 1700’s leading up to the Declaration of Independence. In 1763 the Seven Years War came to a halt and left Britain with a massive amount of debt. This left England suffering from a tremendous amount of taxation. The colonists felt that they were over taxed and felt as if they were being treated as children.
The colonists have the ability to justify their means of revolting because of Great Britain’s actions. One example of this occurs after the French and Indian War. The colonists fought the French and Indian War for the sole purpose of western expansion. They sacrificed their time, money, and lives for this cause. Yet, after they won the war, the British government passed the Proclamation Act . In this, King
The Americans stressed that they should be treated like the other British people. This quarrel led to something that had never happened in American history, the colonists learned to come together against a common enemy, consequently, coming up with the slogan, “no taxation without representation”. One could say that this was one of the biggest things that led to the revolution war. Also, the French and Indian War, caused the American soldiers to come to a realization that they had less liberty than the Englishmen. After all these events, one would think it is safe to say that America would never be the same. Now, stated earlier in this body, one of the major causes for the revolution was, the taxing of the colonies by the British empire. Britain thought they could be clever, by cutting down the price on tea thinking that it would cause the people to accept taxation without consent (Tindall/SHI 190). Disappointingly, for the British that is, the people in Boston chose liberty over cheap tea bags (Tindall/Shi 190). On a chilly December day, disguised patriots loaded three British ships and threw all the tea into the
Listed after the preamble, the colonists mentioned how they asked the monarchy to remove the unjust laws they had placed upon them many times but were simply ignored. This lead to them having no other option but to declare independence, if Great Britain was not going to take their needs into consideration then they would not stay colonies. They believed the monarchy was being unjust and that they did not care about the colonies enough as they should, and the British people were no better. According to the colonists not only was the monarchy to blame but also the British people in general.
The decision of British ruler to tax the colonists was not a decision that the settlers approved and they demonstrate it in many occasions. Starting in 1764 with the sugar act, where products like coffee, tea, sugar wine were taxed, all through the stamp act and many others the British reign reaches its culmination with the tea act which was a last attempt by the parliament to assert its supremacy over the colonists. The tea act was an attempt by the English parliament to save the India Company from bankruptcy. They gave them the right to sell tea directly to the Americans and they reduced some duties. A move that the parliament thought to be winning and flawless was in fact one of the triggering reasons of the revolution. In fact, as the tax
The colonists were angry at England because they could not vote for members of Parliament and no colonists were members of Parliament either. They thought this was very unfair treatment and they wanted to go against it. Parliament also said that the colonies could not trade anything with anyone but England and this fired them up even more. They wanted the freedom to trade with who they wanted to trade with instead of only being able to trade with one country, England. Of course when they got made it started a huge cry and that the colonists should not be taxed unless their own representatives approved the taxes. This is when the ¨no taxation without representation¨ began.
