Concept 2 - Parenting Styles There's three parenting styles there's authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. An authoritarian parent is someone who is strict, imposing many rules and not nurturing. An authoritative parent is someone who is allowing discussion with the kids, placing limits and nurturing. An permissive parent is someone who is inconsistent with few rules and very loving. For me, my mothers parenting style is authoritative, she can be strict, being not too
When disciplining your child remember that the strongest influence on your parenting style is how your parents raised you (Brimhall, 2015). The three parenting styles that Barumrind discovered includes authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. These patterns parents display when raising their child can positively or negatively impact your child’s development. Parents who demonstrate authoritative parenting style are firm control on the child’s behaviors, but allow the child to develop autonomy. Unlike authoritative parenting style, authoritarian parenting style does not promote independency. Lastly, permissive parenting style is over indulgent with no
Authoritarian is only one of three parenting styles that Baumrind details. The other two styles include authoritative and permissive. These two variations in parenting styles were seen in the way my relatives and friends’ parents approached parenting. I observed how the parents of my close friend handled parenting. They maintained control over aspects in my friend’s life like school and chores but allowed the freedom to make decisions in areas of social activities. The most striking difference between my parents and my friend’s is the use of reasoning and the expression of warmth. Her parents provided justification behind their commands and or punishments while maintaining a sense of love and affection. The bond and love that is evident between my friend and her parents is not as strong in the relationship between my parents and me. The style that her parents exhibit is known as authoritative because of their focus on some parental control, use of reasoning and warmth. While on the other hand, my cousins raised their children in a completely different manor using a permissive parenting style. While they provide obvious love and affection towards their children, they fail to exert control and regulations. They did not have any real sense of rules in their household. Their children tend to act and do whatever they wanted with little to no repercussions.
The second group is called permissive parenting. Permissive parents give up most control and rules to their children. In contrast of authoritative parents, they permit their children to do anything children like. These parents want to bring their children freedom. They want their children to develop in the free ways. They do not set any rules and routines in their children’s lives. While authoritative parents do not provide children with choices, permissive parents give children as many choices as possible, even when the children are not able to make good choices. These parents accept with all their children’s behavior, good or bad, and permit their children develop in the ways their children like. Permissive parents want to bring their children warmness and love, and they never scold or punish their children. However, like authoritative parenting, permissive parenting sometimes is not good for children. Children do things in the wrong ways and this can bring them danger; however, there is no advice from parents to put them in the right ways. These parenting style can bring children and people around them danger.
Research has shown that children typically replicate the behavior of their parents. Parenting styles come in multiple categories such as authoritative, neglectful, permissive, and authoritarian. In which each parenting style has a different effect on each individual. While one child may succeed with a certain parenting style another may not. Authoritative parenting incorporates high responsiveness and highly demanding. In contrary neglectful parenting lacks responsiveness and is uninvolved in the child’s life. Likewise, neglectful parenting is permissive parenting in which has low demands. Furthermore, the authoritarian parenting follows a more military-like way of teaching. With that, the authoritarian style of parenting consists of high expectations and little to none feedback on child's progression. In all each parenting style such as authoritative, neglectful, permissive, and authoritarian shapes a child differently.
Parenting styles are as diverse as parents themselves. Parenting is one of the most challenging and difficult responsibilities a person can face. The way a family is structured is called the parenting style. Parenting styles are collections of parental attitudes, practices, and non-verbal expressions that characterize the nature of parent-child relationships. Because individuals learn how to parent from many different examples including their own parents, role models, society and life experiences. Parenting techniques can vary greatly from household to household, however, experts believe that parenting styles can be broken down into four main categories which include permissive, authoritarian, authoritative, and
Parent’s play a significant role in the outcome of the child. The style of parenting and family experiences a child is exposed to are vital to the outcome of the child’s behavior and attitude for all their life. Overall, there are four types of parenting styles: Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive, and Neglectful. Authoritative parents show a moderate amount of control and are very responsive and warm to the child. They show trust, open communication, acceptance, and show high levels of awareness (where their child is, who they are with, etc.) Authoritarian parents show high levels of control and low levels of warmth. They expect, even demand, hard work, obedience, and respect from their child with little to no response of acceptance or
What is your parenting style? Do you have authoritarian parenting style; meaning you are demanding but unresponsive to your child's needs or wishes. Maybe you have a permissive parenting style. This style has two possible categories. First there is permissive-indulgent parent whom are responsive, warm, and accepting of their children, but provide few rules or rarely punish their children. Second option under this label is permissive-indifferent whom are parents that are both unresponsive and uncontrolling. The last type of parenting style is the authoritative style. Which is which is responsive, warm, and involved with the child; sets clear standards for mature, age appropriate behavior, expect their child to be responsive to the parents demands. So what is your parenting style? I will provide a observation review of some parenting style of children playing at a park and describe the interaction between the parent and the child.
The three parenting styles children are raised by are authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. The authoritarian style is often coercive, using threats or force to get the children to obey. The permissive parenting style is unrestrained and does not have many boundaries or rules for the children. Finally, the authoritative style can be seen as a happy medium between the other two parenting styles. Authoritative parents set rules and show control, but are also willing to negotiate or let things slide occasionally.
What is parenting style? As we look through the history of parenting style, Parenting for Brain mention that it started with Diana Baumrind, a developmental psychologist. Baumrind identified different type of parenting style, which are authoritarian, authoritative, permissive (indulgent), and neglectful parenting. She notices that the type of behavior was correlated to the kind parenting in the family (Parenting for Brain 2015). The type parenting style will be shown throughout the paper and it will discuss the different type of parenting and its affects in the
Every parent disciplines their child differently, and each style of parenting can have life-long psychological effects on the personality and character traits of the child. Of course, no two personalities are the same - people are going to be who they want to be, regardless of their upbringing. However, the way that parents raise their children has a lasting affect on who they become, regardless of whether the child stays in their parents teachings or not. Studies have indicated that there are four main types of parenting. Obviously no two parents are the same either, as mentioned earlier, and therefore these parenting styles will differ from family to family. The four parenting styles include authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and the most recently discovered, uninvolved parenting.
Third, authoritarian is the best method among the parenting styles to rear a child. Recall that parenting style is the strategies of the parents use to bring up a child. According to Diana Baumrind, clinical psychologist, there are four types of parenting styles namely: authoritative, permissive, authoritarian and uninvolved. Moreover, these parenting styles, according to studies, produce various outcomes to the children (See psychology.about.com). Table 1, presents the characteristics of each parenting styles while Table 2, shows the comparison of the positive and negative effects it created towards the children.
Because parenting does not come with a handbook of instructions, parenting style may be strict neglecting or permissive. According to Broderick, & Blewitt, these styles are better known as permissive, authoritive, neglective-uninvolved, and authoritarian (Broderick, & Blewitt,2013). Children’s identity may be shaped as a result of the style of parenting, in some cases the influences of a parents parenting style can be positive or negative in shaping
The next parenting style and the best of all four is called the authoritative parenting style. These parents set clear and consistent boundaries and are firm on rules. Despite being strict, they are also supportive and loving. They take their time to explain and reason with their children as to why they should act a certain way and possible consequences otherwise. The children of authoritative parents are usually very independent, self-confident, sociable and pleasant, and successful. They generally display self-regulation and positive behaviour (Feldman & Landry, 2014, p.172).
Were your parents always nice and lenient to your wants and needs or were they demanding and always had high expectations of you? Most people do not really think about what type of parent they are, it just happens naturally but after explaining two of the four parenting styles, it will certainly open a mom’s minds about which type of style they grew up with and which type of parent they are to their children. I am going to explain the similarities and differences between permissive and authoritative parents, this will help mothers identify which type of parent they are and explain the pros and cons of each parenting style.
During the stage of early childhood parents should consider the child’s social, physical and emotional development when deciding which parenting style to use. Some adults continue to practice their parents approach because that’s how they were taught. Others may have learned about parenting styles throughout their education or may have heard it from other parents. There are three main parenting approaches that parents use to educate their children which are authoritarian, permissive and authoritative approach. Authoritarian style is when there is only one-way communication and the parent is usually the one making the rules. Permissive style is when the parent is aware of what the child is doing, but does not provide caring relies on neglect. Authoritative style is when the parent and child work together to develop rules and positive guidance (Miller). Today, these parenting styles are the most common used upon children. Early childhood is a critical stage because children are starting to learn languages and are curious about how their surrounding works. The most appropriate parenting style to use during early childhood is authoritative approach.
