Hi Britney, What makes a social problem a social work problem? Identifying a social problem as a social work problem often emerges when issues affect individuals or communities within the context of broader societal challenges. Social work addresses issues rooted in systemic injustice, inequality, discrimination, and oppression (Jansson, 2018). When social problems intersect with human rights violations, marginalized populations, or issues of inequality and exclusion, they become inherent to social work practice. In the case of LGBTQ+ homelessness, it embodies a social problem that resonates deeply within the domain of social work. Homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth arises predominantly due to family rejection based on sexual orientation or gender identity, forcing these individuals out of their homes (Jansson, 2018). This scenario underlines issues of social injustice, discrimination, and the violation of human rights, making it a crucial concern for social work intervention (NASW, 2021). How can social work practice skills be applied to advocacy and policy that promote change? Social work practice skills are instrumental in advocating for policy changes and implementing interventions that address such challenges. Advocacy in this context involves working collaboratively with stakeholders, including advocacy organizations, legislators, affected communities, and other professionals (Jansson, 2018). Social workers employ their expertise to highlight the specific difficulties faced by LGBTQ+ youth regarding housing insecurity. This includes advocating for policies that promote secure housing for these individuals, and combating prejudice and discrimination rooted in sexual orientation and gender identity (Baams et al., 2019) References Baams, L., Wilson, B.
