Underwood describes several controversies associated with the study of aggression in girls. Describe one of these controversies. Does thinking about this controversy change your thoughts on aggression in girls? There seems to be many controversies surrounding the study of aggression in girls. Underwood described the issue of focusing too much on aggression, and not the broader issue of mental illness. Additionally, there doesn’t appear to be a DSM definition of social aggression. To me, this puts girls at an even larger disadvantage. Without the construct of a definition and what it means, getting help to battle social aggression in girls makes it even harder. This controversy does not change my opinion on aggression in girls. I feel that girls and boys display aggression in very different ways. A common theme to some of the approaches to reducing social aggression in girls seems to be involving girls in more structured activities, reducing social exclusion of girls, and helping girls feel as though they belong. Why might these strategies be effective? What are some immediate and long-term outcomes to look for in girls exposed to social aggression? How can you increase awareness of these outcomes among adults who work with children? Underwood, M. K. (2003). Social aggression among girls. New York: Guilford Press
