Maile Kaplan ENVS 1000 - 015 9/20/23 EJScreen Analysis Hypothesis: The areas with lower education levels will have more waste because of patterns with environmental justice where less privileged areas get stuck with the hazardous wastes and pollution. 1. Describe the pattern you observe concerning your selected demographic variables and waste. The patterns overlapped as I had expected. In areas where there were people who had less than a highschool education had more levels of hazardous waste and air pollution than those who had more than a highschool education. 2. What other factors might explain the trends you observe (e.g., physical or environmental characteristics)? - Cite sources In Marin County there is a lot of research that occurs, especially in the areas I had focused on so it makes sense that there are certain plants in the area that were focused on. Also a big factor is that San Quentin, a very high-security prison, is located right smack in the middle of the area so people tend to care as much as to what happens to that area. 3. How might this type of geographic data help decision-makers plan for the future and/or address potential inequities? It makes it so that certain decision-makers make a plan that actually changes what is occurring right now. This geographic data could be used as a baseline to work towards improvement and as changes occur, comparison about what the data looks like now. 4. If you were doing this exercise for a real-world application (e.g., your job), what else would you need to do? I think that surveying the people within the areas of hazardous waste to see if they’re feeling a personal impact from it and to see if they have to stay living in the area or if they would move if they could. In conclusion, just more statistics on those in the area.
