Per Ferris and Stein (2022, p217,) discrimination is, “…an action or behavior that results in the unequal treatment of individuals because of their membership in a certain social group.” Furthermore, discrimination can take different forms. One of which is known as individual discrimination where discrimination is carried out by one individual against another (Ferris & Stein, 2022.) Another form of discrimination is known as institutional discrimination. This type of discrimination occurs when discrimination is carried out systemically by political, economic, or educational institutions that affect all members of a group who encounter that institution (Ferris & Stein, 2022.) An example of institutional discrimination can be found within the US healthcare system and how it is shaping obstetrical care for black and Hispanic mothers based on a study by the American Sociological Association’s Journal of Health and Social Behavior. The study discovered that, “When comparing the experiences of Black, Latina and White women in labor, researchers found all the three groups had similar increased rates of induced labor but said the decisions about the women’s care were likely only driven by how White pregnant women were treated (Chavez, 2023, p 1.)” The study further posits that institutional practices that take cues from treatment of White patients are also being applied to Black and Latina populations causing fear that institutional discrimination is manifesting in obstetrical care. It was found that White mothers who exhibit certain high risk factors in pregnancy are being induced into labor, while Black and Latina mothers are being induced into labor without exhibiting any of these factors such as Gestational tobacco use, maternal diabetes, maternal hypertension, and high gestational weight gain ( Chavez, 2023.) This finding echoes other finding in healthcare inequality based on race and unfortunately exhibits practice that is not centered on the individual patients needs but is based on responsive characteristics reminiscent solely on the needs of the White childbearing population.
