1 Working with Najeeb Heather Whitlock Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6210-19: Human Behavior – Soc Env II – Spring 2024 Dr. Stephanie Muri April 28, 2024
2 Working with Najeeb Growing up, Church was an essential part of life. In general, many others also view their Religion or Spirituality as an essential part of theirs. Many live by the values or beliefs they have been taught and learned over their lifespan. As such, it is essential to incorporate this in their treatment. Spirituality and Religion, Assessment In meeting a client for the first time, I may not initially inquire about their religion; however, this will be essential for their treatment plan over the first couple of weeks. Their beliefs, either from religion or life, will need to be a part of their assessment to make a more accurate recommendation for their treatment. It will also give me more knowledge of the client and how they live according to their beliefs. Strategies In reviewing Najeeb’s case, he is currently unable to attend the Mosque or pray in the traditional sense he is accustomed to. Najeeb is of a different culture, so inquiring about what assistance he requires or would like is another essential element of getting to know him and tailoring his plan. I would not want to offend Najeeb in any way by offering certain assistance that he may not be willing to accept or cannot accept due to his culture. In working with Najeeb, I would learn as much as I can about his culture from him, do research, and even speak with co-workers or friends who may also be of the same faith. I would always be aware of myself, and the treatment given to Najeeb to show that I am always doing my best to
3 assist him and be cognizant of his culture. I would want Najeeb to see that I respect him, his faith, and his culture. Ethics The Code of Ethics tells us, “ Social workers should demonstrate knowledge that guides practice with clients of various cultures and be able to demonstrate skills in the provision of culturally informed services that empower marginalized individuals and groups” ( NASW, 2021). This is what I will remember to follow and attempt to research and learn more about for my clients continually. The Code also gives instructions on what we should do. “ Social workers should obtain education about and demonstrate understanding of the nature of social diversity and oppression with respect to race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, and mental or physical ability” (NASW, 2021). Crisis Assisting Najeeb with his current situation will first require knowing what he will allow. Reaching out to his family, if a release is signed, could assist in finding others of the same Faith to assist Najeeb in his daily prayers. It could also assist in the possibility of the “Imam” (Islamic leader) coming to Najeeb’s home to assist him by providing the ‘ khutbah’ (narration, sermon). Another way for Najeeb to continue practicing would be to see if it were available online. Working with Najeeb’s family will be extremely important in assisting Najeeb.
