Session 4: Living a Transformed Life In chapter 1, Smith (2011) presents the three callings: the call to be a Christian, the vocational calling, and the immediate call. As we are called to be a Christian, we go through a spiritual rebirth (conversion) when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. In the book of Acts, “Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, Acts 2:38). It is also mentioned in the book 2 Corinthians, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,   the new creation   has come: [ a ]   The old has gone, the new is here!” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011,  2 Corinthians 5:17). In order for us to live a transformed life, we must first allow the old self to die, and be reborn again spiritually. This will get us prepared for the vocational calling for which is the work or purpose that God has prepared for us to do in His favor. It is mentioned in Ephesians, “ For we are God’s handiwork,   created   in Christ Jesus to do good works,   which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011,  Ephesians 2:10). We then have the immediate call which refers to our daily walk with Christ and our responsibilities/duties. We can look at the book of Matthew and proverbs and see how we are to present ourselves each day. In Matthew it states, “in the same way, let your light shine before others,   that they may see your good deeds   and glorify   your Father in heaven” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011,  Matthew 5:16), and the verse in Proverbs states, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011,  Proverbs 31:8-9). We are to shine God’s love through our actions and good deeds daily. Without being called to be a Christian first, we would not be able to fulfill the other two. Reading this weeks Biblical Perspective, it mentioned, “ A conversion, or radical change, is necessary for humans to shift from being dominated by sin to being in God’s good graces, or “saved,” “redeemed,” a Christian.” (Session 4 Biblical Perspective, 2023). This is telling me that without transformation, how would be able to satisfy God’s purpose for our life in our vocational calling? I would fall short and fail the task at hand. We each need to learn not to compare our calling with our classmates or any child of God, for we all serve a purpose and being able to understand scripture will help us learn that although we are all serving one God, we each have our own unique callings designed specifically for us. We are to go out in the world and teach others about God as mentioned In Mark, “ He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011,  Mark 16:15). For myself, I am hoping I can be that light to others as a Christian counselor who will try to shine God’s love on each person He puts in my path. Also, being His vessel in my daily life with the Bible groups I assist with, the women shelter I help in, and within my church. As we can see, God called us all to be a part of His work to bring fairness and kindness to all His creation. How beautiful and what a privilege. It isn’t always an easy
task as we all will face challenges, but having our trust and faith in the Lord, we can overcome all obstacles with God at our sides. References Colorado Christian University. (2023).
