2-2 Journal: Creation and the Afterlife
The function of the Navajo creation myth is to explain how the Navajo people emerged and
about the Navajo homeland. The function of the creation myth from the Bible is to tell us why
God created the universe. The reason why the afterlife myths have a place of punishment is
because it show that those who have committed sinful and wicked acts still get punished.
Surprisingly enough, the Navajo belief that the afterlife varied from person to person. For the
Navajo people, the afterlife, in general, is not thought of as a place of happiness or a desire at all.
In the Bible, the afterlife varies slightly from the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament,
when people die, they share the same fate, whether righteous or wicked. In the New Testament,
Jesus judges humanity, and people get sent to hell based on whether they believe in Jesus and
live by god.
