Discussion 3 - The Sacred and the Secular in Modernity Read the following article: "Can we really blame religion for discrimination against women?" (PDF) Do you think that the author is being overly optimistic about the status of women in religion? Do you agree or disagree with her claims? What about the status of women in the Middle East, India, and Asia? What was your reaction to this article? Provide specific examples in the news media that supports your position. I believe the author is being overly optimistic regarding the status of women in religion. I believe this due to the author explaining that women of different cultures and religions may not see themselves as “oppressed” or “marginalized” but rather just participating in their respective cultures and religions. I agree with the authors claims. I believe so because in my personal culture of my home country (Nigeria) some women tend to take the role of letting their husbands work and take care of the family, while the wife takes care of the house. In America, this can be seen as demeaning to women, however in Nigeria this is simply just women being taken care of by men which is usually a custom from their religion as well. I view this article as well written and perfectly responds to the topic of blaming religion for discrimination against women. Everyone has a viewpoint on this subject, and some cultures' histories are not women being discriminated against because of their religion, but rather women being a centerpiece and focal point of their religion.
