According to Dr. Rebecca Levy, aging self-stereotypes originated in childhood and carry out into adulthood. Witnessing the way people around us age impacts our views on the aging process. To change the minds of young people, we must teach them that aging is a beautiful process of life. Teaching youth about aging will allow us to gain more respect and youth to show respect for those who are elderly. Steps we can take to eradicate the cycle of self-stereotypes are educating ourselves, educating youth, thinking positively about aging. We can do more exercise, eat healthier, and take better care of ourselves. When the time comes and we are elderly, we can retire and enjoy the rest of our lives traveling, enjoying our grandchildren, and our families. While being able to educate our grandchildren as they grow on things we experienced in our lives, which will help provide the younger generation with different perspectives than just theirs. As stated in the article, Wise Up: Study Aging, “The idea that aging is exclusively a process of loss and decrement and thus the investigation of such is depressing and somewhat hopeless.” (Scogin, F, Ph.D., Parker, Ph.D.). Strategies that promote gerontology would be doing seminars, promotional videos on the importance of gerontology and the ever-growing need for professionals in this field. Providing more funds to support clinical trials and research for medical conditions that are typically diagnosed in those of elderly ages. Ways to retool for Aging Americans in terms of career opportunities includes: Healthcare as the demand for healthcare services increases as people age. Financial planning, as many elderly adults need assistance managing their money and bills. Technology, as technology is changing and improving, could provide elderly adults with an easier way of communicating, receiving help, etc. Housing, the need for age-friendly housing is increasing with the increase of elderly adults. Ways to retool for Aging American in terms of services includes: Providing home care services, as many elderly adults prefer to stay home, providing a helping hand with grocery shopping, running errands, meal preparations, and medical care. Transportation services, as people age, driving becomes riskier, and they become unsuitable for driving. Adult Education, even an elderly adult still enjoys learning and engaging with the world. Wellness programs promote physical health, mental well-being, and social engagement. I believe that aging stereotypes fall under ethics. Within ethics we set our own values in which we teach to our younger generations which involves showing respect to our elderly adults. Although they appear differently than what is seen on the streets, they still deserve common respect and decency.
